I'm your Anne-tidote to horrible content on the internet.

BelleOfTheBall··on Quibi Is Shutting Down
Except those people will most often prefer to go watch a minute-long video on YouTube or an even shorter TikTok clip or just scroll mindlessly through their social media of choice even if nothing new shows up. What Quibi failed to understand is that bored people on phones aren't lacking entertainment, they're just in the exact type of boredom that makes them want to do pretty much nothing.
BelleOfTheBall··on Firefox 82
The CPU and GPU usage during video playback is pretty big for me, I noticed that Firefox could get pretty intense on resource usage when playing longer videos. Not sure how much impact it will have on battery life but fingers crossed.
BelleOfTheBall··on How Discord Won
Couldn't you just stick to Discord on mobile and only open it when a notif comes? That way you don't see any changes in the icon, like on desktop. Plus, the notification settings in general are pretty flexible, one of the few things I genuinely like about Discord.
BelleOfTheBall··on German ship completes historic Arctic expedition
Does that really matter if they lose their habitat? No matter how many of them there are, without a place where they can thrive, the bears will just die off.
BelleOfTheBall··on Police killings more likely in agencies that get military gear, data shows
This is a false equivalency. Putting on a seatbelt poses no danger and requires no effort. Giving police military-grade vehicles and weapons, on the other hand, costs money and isn't safe, considering their track record.
BelleOfTheBall··on Police killings more likely in agencies that get military gear, data shows
> Is there any particular reason to think such a thing couldn't happen in America, where rifles and explosives aren't hard to get?

Is there any particular reason why a clear edge-case scenario should be our basis for arming police departments, which spend most of their time solving mundane domestic disputes, pulling apart drunken fights and responding to break-ins where someone's Playstation was stolen? We should orient policing towards deescalation based on what they usually face. If their most common problem is a drug addict high on PCP, they don't need a gun, they need proper training and, perhaps, a taser.

BelleOfTheBall··on A city with a thousand eyes: mass surveillance in Belgrade
Many of the countries in the East of Europe seem to be in the process of turning against the EU, from Hungary to some mild anti-EU sentiments in Poland, etc. Although I did read some Polish people suggesting that EU's financial benefits to the country guarantee they'll remain.
BelleOfTheBall··on DuckDuckGo Founding Member in Global Privacy Control Standards Effort
> Google and Microsoft Edge are more private even though neither has any privacy.

This line in their post gives away how overblown that stance is. There's simply no way for DDG to be as bad as Google, much less worse than Google.

Still, I know Brave got caught hijacking links but DDG is, among all well-known search engines, the most privacy-friendly without a doubt. Especially coupled with a good browsers and some add-ons. I'm talking specifically about Firefox but I'm sure people here have some more unusual solutions they prefer.

BelleOfTheBall··on From its name to its drug interactions, there’s a lot going on with grapefruit
I had no idea that grapefruits had so much risk associated with them if you're taking medication. Most of the ones listed in the article are actually hugely popular, I wonder how many people took some innocent stuff like Tylenol and then drank some grapefruit juice and felt weird, without realizing what happened.
BelleOfTheBall··on Amazon hid its safety crisis
They'd get rid of their union 'problems' and face a whole other crisis. But that wouldn't really stop Amazon and I'm sure bad PR isn't as expensive as having to pay out workers who got injured because they couldn't keep up with 'supreme' robotic workers.
BelleOfTheBall··on Water on Mars: discovery of three buried lakes intrigues scientists
> It’s thought that any underground lakes on Mars must have a reasonably high salt content for the water to remain liquid.

This means that any lifeforms in that water are unlikely but is it possible that the water remains liquid through something other than salt? Because the other alternative would be a lifeform that isn't influenced by salt as much as any that we know.

BelleOfTheBall··on Someone has stolen my Instagram account
I'm like 90% sure there was an article about Shopify employees stealing customer data just recently. Not FAANG, granted, but it's still a traditional way of data leaking or accounts being stolen. Inside jobs aren't exactly a rarity.

Yup, here it is, just five days ago.

BelleOfTheBall··on The fresh smell of ransomed coffee
IoT terrifies me and I'd never buy one of these internet-connected gizmos but let me play devil's advocate: you could be coming home from work and, as you know you're about 6 or 7 minutes away, you instruct the machine to make a cup of coffee so that it has time to cool, and maybe you also turn the AC on, etc. It's the exact fantasy being sold to people who buy them and it does, in a way, save time.

Although, personally, I'd question anyone buying these, much less taking out their phone while they're driving to tell a "smart" coffee maker to brew a cup.

BelleOfTheBall··on How Iranian diaspora is using old-school tech to fight internet shutdown at home
What a fascinating way to fight a totalitarian crackdown. The article doesn't seem to talk about its feasibility against the government though. Is there no way they could stop it, bar actually damaging people's satellite dishes?
BelleOfTheBall··on Luna – Cloud gaming service
I'm honestly most bothered by the fact that this is yet another slice of media that gets the "you rent it, you don't own it" treatment. I want to own my games, damn it, I don't want to rent it for a month. It's not about me feeling like I'm paying too much for games if I stay on a subscription for years just to play a game. It's about me wanting a hard (or digital) copy of a game I love because one day they might introduce an awful patch or licensing issues might push the game out of the service and, by proxy, my reach. I'm gonna keep supporting services like GOG and itchio that let me have games that I paid for because those seem optimal to me.
BelleOfTheBall··on Wikipedia is getting a new look
Fingers crossed it won't be as awful as WTSocial. That place looks outdated by about 10 or 15 years and it was literally made last year. I actually much prefer Wikipedia's current design over that, if I had to compare the two.
BelleOfTheBall··on John Cleese Discusses Creativity, Monty Python, and Artichokes
Amusing how the article still has a "Brexit" tag despite Cleese insisting that he doesn't want to talk about it and that his "self-imposed exile" has nothing to do with it. Sorry if I'm cynical but it's kind of telling how the tags are driven solely by what gets the SEO department happy.
BelleOfTheBall··on Apple Fitness+
That's a gross exaggeration of how much pull Apple has. I'm no fan of it or how much data these new devices will collect but saying "the school you attend, the church where you worship" is some Twitter-comments level of hysteria. Yes, we should be worried about corporations owning too much and having too much power. No, Apple isn't going to buy up schools and churches.
BelleOfTheBall··on I Want to Fix Goodreads
My most hated part of Goodreads is that if you type something in search and try to click the middle mouse button to open the resulting, highlighted book in the new window... it just copies the page you're already on. It's a site for discovering books, why do I have to open the landing page 5 times if I want to open 5 books? It's so counterintuitive to me.
BelleOfTheBall··on Dozens of scientific journals have vanished from the internet
I'm astonished there's not an equivalent for this literally everywhere. Even if some articles seem not terribly important at the moment, as progress marches on many could become relevant again and losing access to those is simply inexcusable.
BelleOfTheBall··on Noita – roguelite where every pixel is simulated
I still remember when Red Faction: Guerilla was hyped up as an amazing feat because it had destructible environment and they promised you could use physics and destruction to pass missions in unusual ways. Sadly, it turned out to be, as it usually is, severely limited by the technical side of things.
BelleOfTheBall··on Winner of French Scrabble Title Does Not Speak French (2015)
Wouldn't that be an enormous timesink though? You basically have to memorize the dictionary... and then memorize it again but in a more complicated way.
BelleOfTheBall··on How Chekhov invented the modern short story
Plays in general are probably the easiest form of writing to distill into stereotypes since they rely heavily on dialogue and that's bound to get repetitive when thousands of works are written. I can think of a dozen plays right now where there were similar moments of young adults arguing with relatives (usually not parents but aunts or grandmas) or someone monologuing about a death that happened offscreen but in a vague way. All of these moments can be deconstructed and I do find them repetitive if I read a few plays in a row... but I still feel like it's wholly a matter of preference. If you like those elements - sad women staring out of windows, for example - you'll like the plays.
BelleOfTheBall··on Reddit app got 50M downloads by making mobile web experience miserable
The Reddit experience overall is incredibly subpar. I can't remember the last time I opened the site without using the unofficial Reddit Is Fun app or the RES extension on desktop. They make the experience so much better and keep me wondering why Reddit doesn't implement some of the features provided in those extensions into the official version.
BelleOfTheBall··on Wind and solar are cheaper than thought, admits UK government
How viable would that be in terms of maintenance? I presume it'd have to have a lot of failsafes or personnel that's assigned to some of the distant or at-risk grid sections, to keep things running smoothly and do repairs fast if something gets damaged.
BelleOfTheBall··on Jacksonpollock.org (2003)
A lot of the post-war abstractionists are treated that way by people. From de Kooning to Reinhardt to Yayoi Kusama, they all get dismissed for one thing or another but I think all of them have some unique stylistic choices that breathe life into their art, Kusama in particular. They aren't traditional or easy to love, in fact, they are much easier to just scoff at. But the artists put serious thought into each work and came in with an idea and a vision and, a lot of the time, they realized those in truly unique ways. Just because they're not "pretty" or "technically impressive" doesn't mean they're bad or aren't art.
BelleOfTheBall··on Japan facing credit card number shortage
I assume that it could work as a temporary solution but the article hints that this problem will likely become global soon. So, instead of moving numbers, it's easier to add some and increase the possible combinations.
BelleOfTheBall··on Why facial recognition has led to false arrests
Which is absolutely a big issue with our policing system. Most of the time they just arrest easy targets like sex workers or people who could be charged with 'public misconduct' or something like that.
BelleOfTheBall··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
Telegram doesn't store messages on the device, you don't need to "tell the other person's device" anything, it's deleted from the Telegram cloud.
BelleOfTheBall··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
It is encrypted by default but end-to-end is only for calls and Secret Chats (one-on-one). You can delete any message at any time without a trace for both sides, which protesters often do, really don't think the government needs messages to pin a crime on them. Hell, they've pinned crimes on people for literally no reason before.
