Beaver117··on The Pornography Paradox
A lot of people would
Beaver117··on I did the math. SF is 2.6x more dangerous per sq mi than any other US city
Vote with your wallet. Leave SF and let the people who want to defend it so badly deal with the crime.
Beaver117··on Cash App founder Bob Lee had left San Francisco over crime
If Bill Gates lived in the Tenderloin nobody would be surprised if he was robbed right? Same goes for many other neighborhoods.
Beaver117··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
Just hurry up and automate everyone's jobs so we can get UBI
Beaver117··on Cash App founder Bob Lee had left San Francisco over crime
You're saying SF isn't actually high crime, just most people happen to live in the high crime areas.

That makes it high crime in my book.

Beaver117··on These Tech Workers Say They Were Hired to Do Nothing
Wow they make that much? I wonder if an engineer can switch to being a recruiter easily, sounds like a pretty sweet deal
Beaver117··on Abortion Pill Blocked Nationwide Under Order from US Judge
No it seems like an abortion issue to me. You don't see the same advocates for drug use, prostitution, or assisted suicide
Beaver117··on Manufactured housing: the Ugly Duckling of affordable housing
NOOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST MAKE A PREFAB HOUSE. IT HAS TO GO UP IN VALUE 30% PER YEAR
Beaver117··on Over 40% of the latest YC batch are AI/ML startups
If the bar for entry is that low how will these companies survive?
Beaver117··on Over 40% of the latest YC batch are AI/ML startups
Except these companies are just thin wrappers over OpenAI APIs
Beaver117··on Stripe’s 2022 Annual Letter
Stripe is cool - until stuff starts going wrong. Try running a business and they just reject/hold your payments for no reason, and it's impossible to get any customer support

I switched away

Beaver117··on GitHub hands out your repo visitors IP like candy who ask for it politely
Last two digits are censored. So country/state are given but not exact location
Beaver117··on The case for banning children from social media
I don't go to HN or Reddit and get anxiety about all my friends posting about their awesome lives. I go for information only.

Forums, imageboards, and psuedonymous or anonymous places are not the same as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc

>If Facebook decided to allow pseudonyms, would it not be social media?

You can name your account anything on Instragram or TikTok, but even so most people will connect it to their real identity, add all their IRL friends, etc. Not the case on HN Reddit or any other forum

Beaver117··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Targeted? Are people in SF attacking rich startup founders now?
Beaver117··on The case for banning children from social media
I'm so tired of this argument. HN and Reddit are not social media. Is your real name Pragmatic Pulp? Do you post pictures/videos of yourself here, or update us about your family? I could go on but I hope you get it.

"Social Media" is a really specific term and it doesnt mean any random forum.

Beaver117··on Tesla ordered to pay more than $3M to former worker in racism suit
>In October 2021, a jury awarded him $137 million in damages in the case, but a federal judge threw out that award as excessive. US District Judge William Orrick offered Diaz $15 million in damages in the case instead, but Diaz rejected the offer, choosing instead to have a new trial.
Beaver117··on State-of-the-art open-source chatbot, Vicuna-13B, just released model weights
Why is it locked down? What's the point? Is it locked down if you run locally too or just on the web demo?
Beaver117··on Apple tells some retail employees to reapply for their jobs or be laid off
>if it ends up in articles like this

>bad PR

It's sad that people get laid off but can you really say this kind of article changes anyones stance on buying Apple products?

Beaver117··on Xanax and Adderall Access Is Being Blocked by Secret Drug Limits
Drug dealers come to the rescue
Beaver117··on Midjourney CEO Silencing Satire About Xi Jinping
Ok, and whoever is caught with one of those will disappear, and so will all their family/friends. Are you willing to risk your life for information? Proxies that bypass the great firewall already exist, but most people avoid them because they're not worth the risk
Beaver117··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
Why don't you ask ChatGPT? I'm just giving my thoughts
Beaver117··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
There's a joke that if something isn't nailed down, it'll be stolen. Whereas in some countries the crime rate is so low you can leave your bag somewhere and come back days later and it will still be there.
Beaver117··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
Walkability is low, too many cars, and crime is high, mainly
Beaver117··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
In Japan kids as young as elementary regularly walk by themselves to school, stores, ride the train, go hang out with friends, etc. Doubt it would ever work in the US because everywhere is just plain dangerous, among other reasons.
Beaver117··on About three-in-ten U.S. adults say they are ‘almost constantly’ online (2021)
The industrial revolution and its consequences were a disaster for the human race
Beaver117··on Tell HN: Google search is getting worse
GPT was trained on mostly precrawled data and books/code. Go calculate how much bandwidth it takes to crawl the whole internet
Beaver117··on Tell HN: Google search is getting worse
Maybe the internet is just too big now. How can they search over trillions of documents using the same algorithm as before? Probably too expensive.

Let alone how are they affording to index and crawl all those pages, which is still only a tiny fraction of the entire internet.

Maybe search engines are a dying breed, and we'll have to rely on AI and word of mouth for information soon.

Beaver117··on The effects of wealth on (Swedish) marriage and fertility
You think there's no contraception in poor countries? Come on.

It's not just that. There's a level of wealth where people just choose to delay having kids

Beaver117··on Generative AI set to affect 300M jobs across major economies
Ok let's say 300M jobs are affected, and we continue to get millions of new college graduates per year unable to find work. What's going to happen?

Maybe salaries will take a nosedive? Minimum wage for a junior developer, anyone? Or maybe the people just won't accept it, and boycott companies. If 300M people don't have jobs the economy will certainly stall.

Beaver117··on Please delete 2M files to continue using your Google Drive account
>There's an accredited university in New York that's closing soon.

Sounds like I'm getting a new degree soon!
