BayesStreet··on Flask Mega-Tutorial (2017)
I was a diehard Flask fan for years until I finally decided to try FastApi. Wish I switched sooner. Free swaggerdocs is pretty nice, and dependencies get rid of so much code duplication.

A good starter to mess around in is this project https://github.com/tiangolo/full-stack-fastapi-postgresql

BayesStreet··on Show HN: Site Bay – Managed WordPress Hosting on Kubernetes with Minutely Backup
Hi HN, long time lurker first time poster.

Check out my startup I made as a solo founder over 2.5 years.

It has:

    Minutely Backups (Point-in-Time Machine)
Grafana and PostHog built in (Insites Analytics)
    Staging Sites
Bi-Directional Git Sync (Develop in PHPStorm/VS Code)
    Custom Emails
API Access for web design agencies
    More!
The backend is in FastAPI

If this sounds good, try it out. If you don’t like it, I’ll refund your plan - no worries.

BayesStreet··on Safari 14 added WebExtensions support, so where are the extensions?
If you haven't reapplied lately, you may want to try again. My corp was just approved for the developer program without having to deal with D&B directly, just a phone call with someone from Apple. I think they simplified the enrolment process.
BayesStreet··on Wine 6.0
They basically do the same thing, but lutris is much nicer with a bigger suite of options.
BayesStreet··on How does a gas pump know to shut itself off? (1981)
Do you happen to know the ratio of regular to premium in mid grade?
BayesStreet··on Chronic adversity dampens dopamine production
Absolutely, not only a single neurotransmitter but can have completely different effects in different regions of the brain and most articles are extremely reductive.

This study in particular though is very well done, just publishing striatal dopamine and hopefully we'll see more studies like this in the future to piece it together.

BayesStreet··on TikTok famous: How the app is turning teenagers into celebrities
Reminds me of the recent episode of South Park where "journalists" like Vox claim to be for human rights but bend over to get Chinese payouts. Also why does this post say it's 3 hours old when it was posted yesterday?

Reminder that: If you check the AndroidManifest.xml of TikTok app you'll see they are tracking persistent device identifiers coupled with phone #. Then if you uninstall TikTok you'll still have a bunch of their files in shared space that other Chinese apps can pick up were you to install them, presumably so they can track you even if you uninstall the app.

BayesStreet··on Ask HN: Best Blogging Platform
We’re working on a security focused managed Wordpress hosting platform with custom email and templates included. If you’d like to beta test it email admin@ sitebay.org and we’ll put you up for however long you need free. Thanks to YC summer startup school for hooking us up with some compute credits.
BayesStreet··on The story of Augur, an Ethereum prediction market
This article, like most other crypto related posts is a thinly veiled ad. Anyone who just focuses on how the price graph for something moves isn't worth listening to.
BayesStreet··on Ask HN: Favorite teachers on YouTube?
As much as I want to like sentdex he's a bit lacking in depth and experience. For security you forgot Gynvael if you have the time for a 2 hour livestream vod.
BayesStreet··on Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome
Absolutely, takes a while to compile from source but it's worth it.
BayesStreet··on Twitter Permanently Bans Alex Jones and Infowars
I would agree, but something to think about is Twitter and facebook govern the behaviour of the people around me more than my country's government, probably.
BayesStreet··on What Do Happy Teens Do?
No one should really be considered an authority in the field of psychology. Sure they can get things right sometimes but it's not rigorous enough fundamentally to add much validity. It's their bread and butter to spam NHST at the data until something sticks.
BayesStreet··on L-theanine, a constituent in tea, and its effect on mental state (2008) [pdf]
This outcome looks positive for their Lipton brand. They might have a good viral marketing department, but that's none of my business.

BayesStreet··on Ghostery now displaying Ads in Germany, marketed as “Rewards” program
This is why I use disconnect despite a slightly worse UX/UI. It's better to eliminate or minimize proprietary code's access to your web identity, they can do a lot with a little data sent back home.
BayesStreet··on Theranos Lays Off Most of Its Remaining Workforce
She never earned that worth in the first place, it was effectively a zero risk bet for her with non-zero damages to others. This sort of thing should not be allowed to happen.

BayesStreet··on The top 1% of the US makes $480k or more in adjusted gross income
>The average AGI of the 1% in 2015 was $1,483,596 What is the point of this article? Seems like it just spews random descriptive statistics. I guess it gives you an idea of the shape of the wealth graph at the top extreme, but it's too narrow to really say anything.
BayesStreet··on BitConnect Closes Exchange as States Warn of Unregulated Sales
I'm aware that tether's reserves are a little doubtful, but could you elaborate on why Bitfinex is sketchy?
BayesStreet··on Facebook Can’t Cope with the World It’s Created
With respect to the supply chain; business to business to consumer.
BayesStreet··on Dopamine: An AI platform for designing human behavior
This article made me pretty sad and made me think of this too. I think what an ethical investor needs to do is not deploy capital to any industries that don't add real economic value or wealth or whatever you want to call it. Also, ethical founders should refuse capital from orgs that fund these projects. Basically starve these projects out, but that's sort of idealistic.
BayesStreet··on Dopamine: An AI platform for designing human behavior
>Dopamine’s founders argue that they reserve the right to deny service to specific companies whose work seems to be off the level...

Just "trust" us. There are obviously many teams working on doing this, but never so audacious. These things are definitely not a value add to society, yet very profitable, like e.g. heroin if that doesn't sound too hyperbolic.

BayesStreet··on UFC Fight Pass (a paid service) is using your PC to mine cryptocurrency
I've seen coinhive scripts running on a few sketchy sites including tpb, but to see it on a billion dollar enterprise e.g. UFC is pretty surprising. It's not ethical at all considering running a cpu mining script which might cost the user $1 in electricity might net the controller maybe a penny of that in crypto.
BayesStreet··on Silicon Valley Can’t Destroy Democracy Without Our Help
The irony of this quote in the intro is palpable. "They reveal a society that is painfully divided, gullible to misinformation, dazzled by sensationalism, ..."
