It's had a problem for 10+ years. Not just astroturfing, but proper propaganda pushing on various topics & countries. It quite obvious as an 'outsider'. Then there is all the ai bots/posts that are being fine tuned by humans (deliberate incendiary posts, logical fallacies, which then get corrected by humans). Then the yearly cyclical repost of the same content and comments.. after a few years it become quite clear that certain content gets reposted over and over, by bots or staff. That is unusable.
Mine is in a company capacity, not personal capactiy, so according to their ui, i can immediately send for review without internal testing. But that review step is the one that is currently slow on their side.
App release reviews take at least 1 week now. They take 15% of revenue and I had to pay $25 to create an account. And I'm sure I spent more hours on setting up my business + bank account, dun's number, google account creation & verification, app listing configuration/verification and only then getting to the review stage. My first round took exactly 1 month from having a signed app release on my laptop ready to go to it showing publicly on the store.
Do tell why the downvotes? It actually works. When you tell it to adopt a certain style, just be sure to also tell it not to change the core truth of the output, it must still convey the original intent. It is surprisingly good at outputting Warhammer styles, which is very enjoyable in a dev environments or system admin sessions. Also put on some warhammer soundtrack in the background and you can easily zone in.
I have no idea, I just live in my terminal at this point, on linux. Don't use Visual Studio or Jetbrains products anymore at all. I use visual studio code to view the occasional diff and run sql queries. Other than that, zero desktop apps, just terminal & cli tooling. Its great! I have about 20 terminals open at any given time though. I have no idea how some of my colleagues stay productive as they are messing around with all these workflow tools, desktop apps etc.
A friend of mine runs a web agency company (you know, the oldskool wordpress dev shop). Clients from almost all industries, some very high traffic & publicly visible (think magazines). About two years ago they recommended all their clients remove random ads (primarily via Adsense) as they were injecting crypto-scams and porny/gaming ads for trashy site/apps on sites where they really shouldn't be. Some clients completely dropped it just fine (meaning, no replacement ad engine), while the bigger clients are using purely targeted/specified ads where they know the brand being advertised, typically from within in their own industries, and no more random ads being shown. People are fed up with ads/Adsense. Just the the stuff kids see while playing mobile games are atrocious.
PayShap in South Africa, not sure if it is being attacked yet. I use it a couple of times a week. It's awesome & better than EFT's, enables cheap instant transfer even between banks. It's not a third party private company either, its offered by the reserve bank / bankserv.
I think it is to reduce the amount of cash in circulation, get visible on small transfers and to relieve the EFT clearing houses.
In my country on my specific credit card, I get back about 1.5% of my spend through the card. Over the last five years I've banked for free, but not just that: I get back about 5x to 8x my bank fees alone. That doesn't count all sorts of promo's/discounts through their partners. As an example, my bank has a deal the past year with one of our major pharmacy chains and I get a ton of discounts when I use my card there (they ask at tills if I'm paying with the card), that is on top of normal in-store promos. So the "game" is very much worth it to play in my situation. Funny enough, they charge a flat fee for international transactions and 0% currency conversions, and they use MasterCard, which means free travel insurance. Its an amazing bank. Typically the bank is known to target rural/informal to middle class customers, but they have quite a few wealthier clients which feels like the best kept secret.
He is in his full right to support whatever party he wants?
Those parties exists for a reason, a response to certain pressures. Nothing happens in isolation. If you zoom out a bit and if you can for a second try to empathize with both sides, you will often find that both sides of an issue is correct, reasonable & rational from their own perspectives. It is often more an emotional response than one of pure survival.
The more you force things on people or suppress them, the more they will resist & push back. The rise of the far-right is not random or just pure evil manifesting out of thin air. It is like a acute inflammatory/immune system response. Obviously it can be exploited by bad actors to further inflame/divide & accelerate certain agendas. Often times extremism takes hold when certain justices are denied (which is in fact evil).
Life is best if you assume the guy on the other side (90% of a group) is just a bro trying to survive & have no real bad intent towards you, they don't know you or have been in your shoes, and the other way around too. Thus it is very important to become non-reactive, become observant who is trying to stoke the flames, who benefits from the chaos and so on.
My internet is rock solid and super fast, extra low latencies. OpenWRT shapes my traffic to 90% of line speeds, so zero bufferbloat on my end. All my devices connect to this setup. The proxmox box is just an old dual core mini-pc with 8gb ram and 2x 1gbps NIC's and a wifi 6 module for 2.3gbps wireless (only 5Ghz, no 2.4Ghz). I want to replace this box with a new one to get 2.5gb ethernet & better power efficiency as my box is a 51W cpu, but total powerdraw is about 20w without causing wifi to drop. Aggressive power saving can make wifi unstable.
I've cancelled mine 5 years ago after they keep showing me ganster music and podcasts on my main page, even though I no history of listening or liking such content. So they keep trying to force it into my life. Secondly, they messed up the explorability of artists, playlist and related music. They also removed music from the catalogue, meaning on my playlist there are big memory holes of my favourite music, as they don't even show the artist or song name anymore. They also broke the offline-mode for when I drove my car.. so even if I switched it to offline-mode, music would still not play (after they downloaded and using 10GB+ on my phone). Then they added Joe Rogan and pushed other politics and stuff, more mainstream gangster shit. I just needed a good music player with a good discovery system and decent offline-mode. It used to be very simple. Now its a mess.
So my only path/answer to this was to cancel it. They poisoned the well so efficiently that I will never trust another streaming service again for my lifetime. I hate rewarding bad business practices, businesses pushing their ideologies towards me. No thanks.
Here's another one for you: today I found out that my dual-sim android phone has a single radio that is shared between the two sims. So when you are on a call, the 4G/5G doesn't work on the other sim, likewise, sometimes the the voice sim is unavailable while the other sim engaged with 4G/5G things... which is just stupid. Can't they just add two radios/chips (like many wifi AP's....)? So the whole setup on a consumer phone is actually quite unreliable because of reusing a single radio. I thought it was my buggy code, but nope, just the radio being shared and the mobile operator seeing the sim as offline. Crazy.
I just self-host Gitea. I made own build server (with all the SDK's I need) that runs next to it and I use SeaweedFS for storage. Works amazingly well. So I have automated builds and artifact storage for my git repos's. It all lighting fast too.
Chickens are coming home to roost boys. All that tech debt needs to be repaid NOW. All your holes (security) needs closed. You will not able to "fix it in production next week" anymore. Only "real" developers will be able to keep up with the onslaught that has just begun. The industry will consume itself in the next two years.
I've seen a lot of Wordpress theme jockies in my country call themselves engineers and demand very high fees.. yet half of them do not know how the db works, when/how/when not to use queues, do not care about security ("the client will pay us to upgrade the site to be more secure"), do not know anything about real compilers, type safety etc. In my mind they were a scourge because we are not at the same level at all yet some of them earned more money/status than my peers. Some cases they have caused harm but nothing ever happened to them. So yeah, good the frog is being boiled now. Same with consultancies. They've been milking the system for 20 years, selling "dev hours". They are all getting eaten alive and I'm here for it.
I'm starting to come the the same conclusion, but not for practical reasons. My thinking is about privacy. If I buy some chocolates from retailer X (with or without their loyalty system), these parties will know what I purchased and where: The retailer, the bank, the merchant (visa/mc), wallet provider (Google/Apple/Samsung). Any upstream 3rd parties for analytics, big data warehouses, ai companies (fraud detection, spending predictions), marketing companies, research companies, manufacturers. Then there are bluetooth beacons, microphones, cameras, facial recognition, keyboard/screen capture (Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, Whatsapp texts). Then there is sms and popup notification on device that gets ingested by x amount of systems too. So the whole pipe just exists to gather as much as possible data to sell me more stuff. Having a card will take some of them out of the loop or less rich metadata than using a digital wallet.
So for Diablo and Grim Dawn, just zoom the game camera in. The game then plays like an over-the-shoulder experience and is surprisingly very immersive this way and everything is big enough to play an hour or two without much eye strain. The 6.7" screen is very wide and feels natural. When I played the first time it was just an experiment and I expected the worst but I soon discovered playing like this is much better than keyboard and mouse. The only upgrade from this for me would a $2000 laser projector with high refresh rates + controller.
If you have a tpm (or virtual tpm), you can enroll your passphrase for auto unlock. When sealing the tpm slot, you can decide how much should be sealed: kernel version, drivers, firmware updates, hardware changes etc.. meaning a kernel update can break the seal and ask for passphrase if you included kernel version in the seal. You can set it so the kernel/driver updates won't break your tpm seals. It's usually just one command to reseal the tpm values and the auto-unlock should work again, but it wastes time like you experienced. I use systemd-cryptenroll and a couple boot args.
If you have claude code installed (or ssh access for it), you can ask it to investigate your entire boot chain. It can find and fix it in 5 minutes.
Host PC needs to be on a LAN cable and client device needs at least Wifi 6 for 1080p/60fps and up. Works perfectly in my home. Some routers are just garbage and drop packets, get or build a decent router.
Now try it on your phone. Playing Diablo 2 Remastered in bed on an android phone with controller attachment on 6.7" OLED 2340x1080 @ 120hz HDR is super amazing. Better than Steam Deck....phone stays cool and battery lasts forever, it's the same as watching a movie on it.
I setup a fake display on my fedora instance (inside proxmox) at boot time (boot/kernel args) that mimics the specs of my real display. Sunshine sees it as a real display so I can unplug everything from the box except power and lan cable. No hdmi dummy dongle or virtual display driver needed. Using linux as a gaming server works fine!
True, I've played many indies the last 5 years, they can be amazing indeed and feels like actual games, not chores!
I've abandoned games that are too complex too (stellaris and friends). Basically only play games that can help me decompress my mind within a two hour space before bed.
For what its worth, I use a proxmox server with pcie passthrough to a fedora instance with steam on it. Then I stream with sunshine/moonlight to my phone. My phone has a controller thing it slots into. So basically I can play Diablo 2 on my phone which is amazing. Same with Hades. Basically any game with controller support, I can play it on my phone (6.7" OLED 2340x1080 @ 120hz + HDR). Turn based games, card games, isometrics... they all work amazing! This old gaming machine (Ryzen 5 2600 + 16gb ram + GTX1660) can render almost anything at this resolution for my phone.
I've successfully avoided these companies the last 5 years. Gaming as a whole is dead for me, I just play a couple of old games now & then. The culture is toast too, not just bad games or expensive hardware. So not really losing much sleep over any of this. I have linux on all my machines, so I really only play the one's that perform well on linux. Haven't played online multiplayer games since ~2013. Many of us are like me.
edit: like if a game doesn't work, I no longer spend hours trying to fix it, I don't go ranting on the internet about it.. I just uninstall and play something else. Really simplifies things if you can detach from gaming as a core identity anchor.
