BasicObject··on Ask HN: How would invest 10k$ in your 30s?
Half into a house and half into a Roth IRA.
BasicObject··on Ask HN: What's your Linux window manager and/or desktop environment?
IceWM and Xfce. Glad to see recent development on IceWM. Xfce has always been just comfortable for my uses.
BasicObject··on Remote-first work is taking over the rich world – research hints at why
You are me. We had cubicle walls that were so short they didn't make any difference with noise because half the employees were on their feet while having conversations away. Constant talking. It was endless. Non stop complaining about significant others. Thankfully I had an hour lunch to get away for awhile.

We overheard every call because it was cubicle after cubicle in one big room. But hey! Let's complain about the customer that we just overheard you talking to for 30 minutes. Let's relive it after every call. Man.

Hey yeah, let's have our personal cell phone alert tone be a Linkin Park song at the loudest possible volume and always leave on their desk next to you. What a hell hole.

Micromanagement? You got it! You haven't experienced pedantry until you've met my supervisor. If you misspeak a word he pretends to not understand what you mean until you've re-spoken it in a way he understands. Now that we converse over chat/email almost entirely that ridiculous behavior has subsided.

They rarely cleaned the bathrooms thoroughly. One urinal. One stall. Just gross.

Microwave encrusted with who knows what. Janitors don't clean microwaves I guess?

I'm not one of those people that has very specific temperature needs. But of course we had one of those people that was very underweight in the office that needed it to be much warmer than normal. Why can't those people just wear more layers of clothing and not make the rest us suffer in sweat?

Parking? Okay that was close. If you can find a spot. I will never go back to the office. I will also quit my job first.

BasicObject··on Where have all the insects gone?
I wonder how much noise levels are playing a role in it. Habitat loss is an obvious contributor but it seems like noise levels would hurt songbirds efforts to find a mate.
BasicObject··on Using IceWM and a Raspberry Pi as my main PC, sharing my theme, config and some
I've never needed more than IceWM. Great window manager. Easy to configure too. Glad development has picked up on it.
BasicObject··on Effects of cat ownership on the gut microbiota of owners
I live in a downtown area where there are many cats walking around. They used to poop all over my garden, but I think I may have found a solution but I am not sure. I read that cats dislike the smell of coffee. So to experiment, I would cover the pile of cat poop with a large pile of coffee grounds. In my experience so far the cats do not return to poop in that spot like they would before. It is also not illegal to add plants that are poisonous to cats on the border of your property.
BasicObject··on Replacing grass lawns with native plants
There are native grasses. Most local wildflower seed mixes include them. The mix I just planted had 3 varieties of native grasses totalling 30% of the mix.
BasicObject··on Why are modern 50mm lenses so damned complicated?
I use the 28-200 Tamron on the A7 III. It is amazing for the price. It's a good size and weight for what it is. It isn't always mentioned online, but it's not bad at macro either. For my purposes it strikes many of the right compromises. Rent it and give it a shot.
BasicObject··on More Than 400 Classic Korean Films Free Online Thanks to the Korean Film Archive

BasicObject··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
I don't know about others but when I click youtube links on reddit the back button is disabled. Not sure if it's a bug or by design but I don't remember it always being that way.

No mention of Synaptic anywhere? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaptic_%28software%29 Predates anything here by 5 years. Similar functionality. Yes, nothing is technically for sale in Synaptic, but it's a graphical interface to install thousands of software downloads. What am I missing here?

BasicObject··on System76 – Pangolin
Honest question: what is an example of a good accessible color theme? I'm assuming Solarized is not a good choice for those with color blindness? Please explain, I'm very interested in color and accessibility.

BasicObject··on More patents disclosing a Sony medium format camera with curved sensor
I'm excited about the potential of this but I really hope they don't pull an A-mount on E-mount.
BasicObject··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?
You could grow a food forest and teach people how to grow their own food. I'm attempting this on a small downtown property. I'm in the very early stages.
BasicObject··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?

BasicObject··on Apple’s dongle problem isn’t getting any better
I bought a System76 Thelio. I just ordered the base model and upgraded the ram and processor. I used to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 10 on the same drive on a different machine. But not with this. I have the stock Pop_OS on its own drive and Windows on another. Then I use 2 more drives for media storage. It works great. It's fast and I get best of both worlds. I could have built my own but I really like the company's effort to create open hardware. I felt it was something worth supporting. PCPartPicker is a great tool. I encourage you to try a desktop again. Another great reason to go this route is being able to upgrade or simply having the abilty to easily replace parts yourself. Desktops just last longer. Cheers!
BasicObject··on Apple’s dongle problem isn’t getting any better
I recently went back to a desktop computer. It solved most of my issues with modern laptops/tablets/phones. While it is not mobile, I find that using a desktop computer for my heavier computing tasks and a tablet for my casual browsing to be the best fit for me. On my desktop I program using a 34" ultrawide which I find very efficient. It's great for photo management, multitasking, movies and games as well. My desktop has plenty of USB ports, speed and best of all IMO I can have the perfect keyboard of my choosing. I know this setup isn't optimal for many but it suits me very well. With many switching to remote work it may become more viable now. YMMV. There's also something to be said about separation of computing tasks and time spent doing them. Use the right tool for the job.
BasicObject··on Nitrokey
I bought a Nitrokey and they sent it to the U.S.
BasicObject··on Connecting a Macintosh SE to the Internet with a Raspberry Pi
I wish the screen wasn't out on my SE. I'm terrified to open it up with that CRT. I'm almost certain that it just needs to be resoldered. I've been waiting for someone to do this with a Raspberry Pi. Can the SE run any alternative OSes? The SE/30 can run A/UX. I think you need at least the Motorola 68020 to run OpenBSD... The SE is a 68000 with no MMU. Are you limited to Mac OS?
