Baguette5242··on Bluesky and the AT Protocol: Usable decentralized social media
The Fediverse “is complicated” only because it has been designated as such by countless bullshit media online posts, when Mastodon started to boom after the Twitter/Musk episode.

At some point, if people/users are able to understand the concept of emails, emails accounts and emails providers, they are able to understand the Fediverse that’s all.

> _I think this is the most important factor that Fediverse (and Mastodon) got wrong._ The Fediverse got nothing wrong or did nothing wrong, it was just portrayed as complicated, by some fing community manager of I don’t know which fing bulls*t company that must have been pissed/worried that all his job had to be redone on another service.

I don’t see why people get so shocked about this proposal.

There are laws to force architects to make their buildings accessible to people with disabilities, so I don’t see why it would be shocking to force companies that generate revenues from apps with a certain amount of user base to make their apps accessible.

Baguette5242··on U.S. will soon stop Chinese companies from using American clouds for AI training
At some point the tree needs to be shaken. It just cannot go on like this forever. This is insane.
Baguette5242··on You Shouldn't Make Friends at Work
Yeah, but you caught my meaning, right ?
Baguette5242··on U.S. will soon stop Chinese companies from using American clouds for AI training
Absolutely. Hold my beer while I buy another round of F35.
Baguette5242··on U.S. will soon stop Chinese companies from using American clouds for AI training
Completely agree.
Baguette5242··on U.S. will soon stop Chinese companies from using American clouds for AI training
The only countries that successfully created a local industrial ecosystem did it with massive natural and/or artificial market entry barriers/regulations (Korea, China, Japan, Russia). I believe that until the EU doesn’t dump its absolutist free-market ideology, it will never be able to create an environment suitable for local players to emerge.
Baguette5242··on U.S. will soon stop Chinese companies from using American clouds for AI training
The 30,000th wake-up call for EU. Spoiler alert: it will still not wake up.
Baguette5242··on You Shouldn't Make Friends at Work
Down the line, I believe it is important to be sociable and a “nice guy” at work, but I also believe that making friends in the workplace is very dangerous.

It’s a work place, you never know what can happen, you could get fired, or hesitate to jump on a good opportunity outside of the company because you are emotionally attached to “friends”.

Baguette5242··on China's Economy Is in Serious Trouble
Hahaha !
Baguette5242··on Gemini AI
OK, but can it do Advent of Code 2023, Day 3 part 2, because I still didn’t get that motherf**er.
Baguette5242··on Tesla battle with Swedish unions spreads to Denmark
In EU, Teslas were cool toys at the beginning but now it got this image of "that stupid Musk's product" and people are slowly but surely drifting away from it, especially considering the competition catching up. Surely, this other union thing is not going to improve the brand image.
Baguette5242··on Lessons I wish I had learned before teaching differential equations [pdf] (1997)
> "Both fields embrace a sort of masochism and active desire to keep knowledge impenetrable b/c it acts as a mechanism to feed out the dummies. The system acts an an informal IQ test - that maintains the prestige of the departments. If you're pigheaded and clever enough to get through the masochistic torture is that their undergrad textbooks then you're probably pretty clever and so the prestige of the degrees is maintained."

So true, in many areas. I know a couple of young people that got destroyed by this kind of meat grinding machinery. Typically applies to every medical studies in France, where many kids (with parents that have the money to pay) are going to Spain, Romania or Belgium to study in a less oppressing environment and better teaching methods.

Baguette5242··on Apple Plans Ambitious iOS 18 and macOS 15 Updates, Seeks to Squash Bugs
I honestly feel Apple has reached some kind of plateau in terms of functionalities, features and gimmicks. Most of the things brought to iOS or MacOS are some software gimmicks.

I think the emphasis should be brought on reliability, MacOS and iOS need to bring back this "rock-solid-feeling gap" compared to Windows 11.

I remember that there was a huge gap in usability and reliability-feeling between Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac OS at the time. With the recent releases of Windows 10 and 11, the gap got narrower.

Windows remain a shit platform to dev. though.

Baguette5242··on Don't disable buttons
I think it is the case for PayPal.
Baguette5242··on Show HN: A typing game inspired by Piano Tiles
Cool stuff !
Baguette5242··on The Rise and Fall of the BlackBerry
What killed the blackberry it’s the lack of apps, picture quality and everything that made the iPhone a easy casual phone for everyone. Not only a phone for executives in their 40’s

For emails, connectivity and messaging, BlackBerrys were insanely good. As soon as you stepped out of these fields, it sucked.

I still believe there’s a (niche) room for a keyboard smartphone.
