Re: the bubbles, that was my first thought too. But actually I liked the way she just threw it on there WITH the bubbles, and how they were easily patted away. Shows how easy perfect installation is - but this should be highlighted as a feature instead of potentially giving viewers a bad perception.
BRadmin··on My experiment with smart drugs (2008)
I've taken Provigil one time in my life and it was before a poker session.

I've played a lot of poker and your self-description fits my game pretty well. The math / odds are there - the general hand-reading is there - but can't recall all of the hands shown down, what the exact betting patterns were, etc... it's a real strain for me to focus and force myself to be interested in the small details.

I can honestly say I didn't notice any discernible effects save for a loss of appetite (which usually happens when I play anyways), but appreciated your story and am curious as to how many people playing at the table are under the influence of so-called smart drugs.

BRadmin··on GeoHot Says Goodbye To The Jailbreak Community
I don't think he'd shy away from the description of having a big ego. His posts are full of teasing, gatekeeper'esque type antics.

Heck, he chose the Kanye song "I've Got a Big Ego," as the BG track for one of his recent videos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__TR86PLiHw

He's made it so easy for jailbreakers, they don't respect how much time & work goes into doing what he does. It's that sense of entitlement that lends to him not feeling appreciated and shutting it down (for now).

BRadmin··on Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning
I was under the impression that you were taught to ask if they wanted help to determine if they were legitimately choking to death or not. Is it possible for someone who is truly choking to respond to a question about if they want help or not?
BRadmin··on WakeMate Update
The last update email I was sent from these guys (coincidentally received on April Fool's) said I'd receive a unit no later than July 31st, as a conservative estimate.

No communication between then and now, over 3 months, so I emailed them 5 days ago - no lick of a response.

And can someone clarify this for me, because I have a paypal receipt showing I sent them 5 bucks:

"Although no money was ever collected from those who have pre-ordered..."

It's worked perfectly for the last week, yet when I just plugged it in I got an odd message:

This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone. You may experience noise caused by cellular interference and a decrease in cellular signal strength.

Any ideas??

Good thing I didn't toss my 1st gen dock out when I upgraded to a 3GS, because it works perfectly with iPhone 4.
BRadmin··on Apple letter about iPhone 4
Initially, problem appears to be fixed. I can hold the phone around an inch away from my face, at varying angles, while the screen remains disabled. Before, any cradling of my phone / shoulder would make the screen active, but now it remains disabled.

Just tested against a co-workers by placing on a flat table and moving fingers to cover up the sensor... mine seems to work consistently within about an inch of cover-up, his is hit-or-miss even while physically covering / pressing on the sensor.

BRadmin··on Apple letter about iPhone 4
That's what I was told, but to be honest, I doubt anything was installed.

All my apps/ settings were intact and my version number is the same as the regular shipped build.

I was told to restore my iPhone fresh (which would delete the installed patch, no?) and not to restore from back-up, which is possibly the fix itself. I'm going to do it now and will report back on the results... did you upgrade from a previous iPhone and restored from a previous back-up?

BRadmin··on Apple letter about iPhone 4
Thank you - the proximity sensor issue is a much bigger deal for me as well!

I took my iPhone into a genius appointment yesterday. They took it into the back area and upon returning informed me that they installed a "patch," I couldn't restore from my previous back-up, and that it was a known problem.

Apparently this is a software issue that only affects those upgrading their iPhones (the iPhone 4 doesn't like something in the back-up), not brand-new users.

BRadmin··on Foursquare Puts Money Before Privacy
Most interesting part of the story for me was:

"Wired.com also asked the prominent angel investor Chris Dixon by Twitter..."

Is this a customary practice for journalists now?

BRadmin··on [dead]
I do not speak Korean but friends that are have confirmed that this is fake and the English subtitles do not follow along with what is being said.
BRadmin··on We are giving out water
I reserved one at the store in hopes of being able to get it earlier and more reliably than those having it shipped.

The extra inconvenience must be worth something, right?

Nope, most people who got them shipped received them in the comfort of their home / office a day early.

BRadmin··on After 15 years of practice..
I like what you're saying but there's some pretty gross hyperbole going on here.

You cite zone defense as though it's drastically changed the NBA - but it's rarely deployed.

You say most shots taken in games are three pointers, but they actually make up 18-22% (over the last decade) of them.

And you say KG and Rasheed take over 40% of their shots from three. Kevin Garnett takes 3.3% of his shots from downtown. For Rasheed it's just under 25%. Both are career stats....

BRadmin··on After 15 years of practice..
I think you're talking about H.O.R.S.E... the game of basketball includes something called defense, which generally calls on productive offenses to be faster / stronger / taller.

Every time I read Derek's blog I feel like I'm reading parables. So many cool lessons about being pro-active and simply going after what you want.
BRadmin··on IPad 3G owners account information compromised
Yea their title, "Apple's Worst Security Breach," doesn't quite seem to fit.
BRadmin··on "You Don't Understand Ordinary People" - Feynman Gives Advice to Wolfram
It's interesting because Wolfram quotes Feynman as saying:

"Peace of mind is the most important prerequisite for creative work."

Here's the emailer's original blog post that includes the audio from the Executive Response Team member's message:

You'll also find a link to Stephenson's contact info at the bottom (just in case you're inclined to drop him a line)!

BRadmin··on Apple's forgotten founder still wandering in the desert
Serious question:

What's their rationale for forming a partnership and not incorporating right away as a means of protecting personal assets? Was the official / lawyering process radically different (i.e. terribly expensive) back then?

BRadmin··on Kurzweil’s Next Book: Creating An Artificial Mind
Kurzweil has made a living by doing a lot more than just making claims about technology. He's created new and contributed to existing technologies throughout his lifetime, and saying he'll throw up his hands and blame others when his predictions fail to crystalize paints him as a crock and disingenuous -- he strikes me as more than competent and extremely passionate in regards to his work and theories.
BRadmin··on Who's hiring remotely?
And how should people contact you?
BRadmin··on WakeMate Photo Op
It was $5 - but it's not about the money.

It's about a company promising something and not following through. Top that off with a big helping of poor communication, and you start to get an idea of why some people are frustrated.

I know they removed a few of the Holocaust Denial groups and let others remain based on the content being posted on the board.

If it amounts to hate speech it's a violation of their TOS and gets pulled, so I'm curious what was actually being posted in the discourse that warranted this.

BRadmin··on [dead]
In his own article about the alleged tailing by state department officials Adrian Chen said:

It seems a bit paranoia-tinged, but Wikileaks has good reason to be paranoid. They've already been labeled a security threat by the Pentagon, and if they do in fact have this air-strike video—and their past record suggests they do—there's no question that the U.S. is keeping a very close eye on them.

I do think your posted article is relevant, but claiming they "convincingly rebutted this" is not accurate.
BRadmin··on Gizmodo editor Brian Lam's email to Steve Jobs
I quite like "sufficiently unimaginative" as well.
BRadmin··on Wired identifies iPhone 4G finder
Of course without being in the situation it's difficult to say how one would react, but I believe (or hope to believe) that most reasonable people would never try to make $$ off of such circumstances.

He made no serious attempt to return the phone - he couldn't even contact Apple Care himself? Heck, it's not hard to snap off an email to sjobs@apple.com.

BRadmin··on Wired identifies iPhone 4G finder
...he believed the payment was for allowing the site exclusive access to review the phone.

The attorney keeps stressing this like it's the cornerstone of their defense. Are they trying to say that he was paid for access to review, not in exchange for the (stolen) iPhone itself?

BRadmin··on Jon Stewart assails Apple for becoming "Big Brother"
I don't believe he's giving an opinion about Apple's actions, rather the accuracy of calling them "Big Brother" in light of the fact that other companies maintain a lot more information about their users than Apple does.
