BHSPitMonkey··on NASA to launch space observatory that will map 450M galaxies
And to add to that, DOGE has been known to cancel contracts where the money has already been paid (so we're effective paying for nothing); SpaceX already has what it needs from this contract and has nothing to lose by cancelling the mission now.
BHSPitMonkey··on Happy 10k Day
That's a more realistic and reasonable way for the mention to unfold, but it's still not going to happen. The dealer is (usually) the party servicing the car's warranty, and they will definitely not appreciate or want to support this type of modification when a car is brought in.
BHSPitMonkey··on DeepSeek releases distributed DuckDB
Not _so_ new:

- https://boards.straightdope.com/t/where-did-the-term-album-d... (2009) - https://www.talkbass.com/threads/when-did-release-become-dro... (2013)

But it _has_ spread much faster outside of the music scene these last few years, e.g. describing software and products.

BHSPitMonkey··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Are you seeing evidence that scrutiny is making DOGE more accountable?
BHSPitMonkey··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
I think you misunderstand the metaphor. The expenditure, here, isn't the time/attention of 100 people; It's the things that have been cut/defunded and the consequences of the way those changes have been implemented.
BHSPitMonkey··on Pi-hole v6
Is a DNS blackhole the right way to restrict your TV from doing bad things? The software running on the device might not even use DNS lookups to connect to hosts as it pleases. Your router is probably the better place to add guardrails.
BHSPitMonkey··on What's happening inside the NIH and NSF
After being told to "fight like hell" that day or else they "wouldn't have a country anymore"? And that since trials in a court of law hadn't worked, "let's have trial by combat"? And when informed that the crowd couldn't get close to the stage because of their weapons and the metal detectors, Trump snapped at his staff that they're "not here to hurt me"?

Somehow, though all the plausible deniability winking and nodding, his fan base got the message; You can see it plainly throughout their communications and postings before and throughout the attack.

BHSPitMonkey··on DeepSeek-R1
I like to imagine the entire transcript as a Norm Macdonald bit, a la his moth joke
BHSPitMonkey··on Ending our third party fact-checking program and moving to Community Notes model
I think you've misunderstood, then. The GP's comment was using it in the technical sense (slowed/delayed, not the common "that's so dumb" form you've observed).
BHSPitMonkey··on Ask HN: What are the best programmable holiday lights?
I've had a set of these (purchased from Amazon) deployed since October and we've been happy with them. The outdoor strand is run by a QuinLED Dig-Uno board and has stood up to a lot of rain so far. The wires at the end are just flush cut short with the conductors showing, so I made some attempt to weatherproof that spot just in case.
BHSPitMonkey··on 'Dear Mr. Kubrick': 1960s Audience Responses to 2001 — A Space Odyssey (2009) [pdf]
The Castro Theater in SF also screens it in 70mm from time to time, though I'm not sure if it's their own print or if it's been transported around.
BHSPitMonkey··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
I like the idea of added compensation based on hours covered as it incentivizes the business to avoid very small rotation sizes, but paying extra per page seems like a perverse incentive favoring instability.
BHSPitMonkey··on Backdoor attempt on Exolabs GitHub repo through an innocent looking PR
The point is that any of those tags can be replaced maliciously, after the fact.
BHSPitMonkey··on Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Switch
> The important part is that backwards compatibility became a focus after the Gamecube and it has been ever since. Like, this is just a fact.

It's a fact until 7 years ago, when the Switch was released without the ability to accept Wii U discs or connect to Wii controllers. Two upgrades with BC did not establish a pattern.

BHSPitMonkey··on Trump wins presidency for second time
As of your post, several millions of ballots have not been tallied (half of California, for example).
BHSPitMonkey··on Trump wins presidency for second time
The last time he was surrounded by chiefs of staff, generals, legal counsel, agency directors, etc. who would say "that's crazy, you can't do that" against his worst impulses. Now, all those people are gone and people like them will not be welcome. Now, he has a conservative judiciary (thanks to his last-minute appointees) who recently ruled that he will not bound by the law. Now, his inner circle has a plan to rapidly cleanse all non-partisan Federal government positions of anyone who might tell the Trump administration why something he wants can't be done.

There is no reason to expect things to go like they did the last time around.

BHSPitMonkey··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Is becoming a "political opponent" supposed to be a legal shield against prosecution? Are laws simply unenforceable against politicians who break them to pursue power or abuse their offices?
BHSPitMonkey··on Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Switch
That's an oddly cherry-picked version of a pattern. There was no compatibility between the NES, SNES, N64, or GameCube. Wii and Wii U each supported their predecessor's games, but the Switch did not. Those 2 out of 7 were outliers
BHSPitMonkey··on Show HN: Epublifier – scrape pages (books, manuals) for offline reading
I'll jump on the bandwagon here to shamelessly plug my own little spin on Readability-based EPUB generator: It's a self-hosted OPDS server offering feeds of articles from HN, Tildes, and Pocket which are converted to EPUB on-the-fly (as soon as you try to fetch one). You can add/bookmark it in Koreader, which can run on most e-reader devices. It's simple to self-host (it's published as an image on Docker Hub and GHCR, or you can run it on Node directly).

My local instance just runs quietly on a Synology NAS; I like not having to interact with a computer to use it. Unlike the OP, it can't be used to compile many pages/URLs into a single EPUB, though.

BHSPitMonkey··on NASA freezes Starliner missions
To what end is the government obligated to "notice" Starship? It's not enough that its FAA works with SpaceX to get launches certified (and coordinate air/sea restrictions, etc.), its NASA has already agreed to fund part of Starship's development (and be its first customer with a historic crewed mission) / routinely flies Falcon missions like Europa Clipper this week, and its DOD is a huge customer? I see no reason for a government agency to do media for an event outside one of their missions.

Edit: Plus, here is NASA Administrator Bill Nelson publicly congratulating SpaceX after the catch anyway: https://x.com/SenBillNelson/status/1845461454977196294

BHSPitMonkey··on Programming Zero Knowledge Proofs: From Zero to Hero
> Bob trusts all 50 issuers, but Alice doesn't want to reveal who her issuer is.

So, just a form of certificate chaining? With the same old challenges that come up if Bob learns that one of the issuers was compromised for some period of time?

BHSPitMonkey··on NASA's problems with launch tower for SLS are getting worse
SpaceX doesn't tend to share that kind of information, so we may never know exactly. Plus, it's R&D they expect will amortize over the operational life of Starship rather than infrastructure being built for a narrow set of missions that I can't see resulting in much future reuse.
BHSPitMonkey··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
"Early September". I'm not sure if any of the live streams of entry/recovery will be cancelled now that Butch and Suni won't be on board.
BHSPitMonkey··on I Created 175 Fonts Using Rust
If you like platformers, give Celeste a try. The scene in that mockup is a reference to an opening scene from that game.
BHSPitMonkey··on Entropic Engineering DEFCON 32 Statement
A hidden screen soliciting donations is certainly in poor taste when you're building a product meant to represent another entity, but "malware"? What is the attack surface on a conference badge that runs a Game Boy emulator?
BHSPitMonkey··on NASA says Boeing Starliner astronauts may fly home on SpaceX in 2025
They are both seasoned NASA astronauts who have done 6-month stints aboard the ISS before (Butch once, Suni twice). They know how to be useful and NASA has indicated that they've been working up there.
BHSPitMonkey··on NASA says Boeing Starliner astronauts may fly home on SpaceX in 2025
I think they mean for the continued costs of correcting the issues. It's a fixed cost contract, and Boeing is currently on the hook for the runaway costs this mission is incurring.
BHSPitMonkey··on Eyechat
It's the eyebrow-inclination detection that really makes this a work of art. Being able to turn a serious stare into a serious aspect ratio is power I didn't know I needed.
BHSPitMonkey··on Medieval
It's a reskin of the EP-133, so likely reusing most of the manufacturing tooling as-is.
BHSPitMonkey··on TOTP tokens on my wrist with the smartest dumb watch
You'd really need to block fetch(), websockets, WebRTC, all external images/stylesheets/scripts added to the DOM later, and service workers (to prevent the upload from just being deferred). It's not easy to make sure a web page can't phone home.
