BEEdwards··on Apple to end employee gagging clauses after activist campaign
>employee gagging clauses related to workplace harassment

maybe I'm incredibly naive to the world, but the fact that this is a thing completely baffles me.

How can an employer prevent you from speaking about working conditions? Even from the companies perspective, this ban would seem to make it more advantageous to go public first, before reporting to the company which would limit your ability to do so...

BEEdwards··on Missing the Point of VR
which are arbitrary and don't accommodate this person's range of motion making it useless for his use case.

They want their virtual reality to allow them to do more than they can in the real world... wtf is the point of virtual realities if they suck just as much as this one?

BEEdwards··on House Democrats debut new bill to limit US police use of facial recognition
>and help navigate ships through space

the spacing guild handles ships, they do train their minds, but not in the same way as mentats. They use spice melange's prescient powers to navigate more than maths.

BEEdwards··on Are we too many people or too few?
We can't take care of all the people we have now and they want to add more and more forever...
BEEdwards··on Show HN: Browser extension that spoofs your location data to match your VPN
Chrome is about to kill add blockers and you're complaining that Firefox doesn't have a super niche feature?!

You can literally accomplish this in firefox by other means.

BEEdwards··on Why Google is so unbearable, and how to fix it
I think it's more about training your google algorithm, i searched the same things they searched and my results are answers to the question.

how to change a tire, nets videos of tire changing and the first 5 results are all different sites explaining how to do it.

how are pearls made, gives me an inline box answering the question.

half the things I search it offers me a "did you mean (my search) reddit" which I usually did...

google isn't great, but it's still the best by far (I like the algorithm that knows what i search and assists me with it), i'm not sure what this person has done to theirs...

BEEdwards··on UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg
called it worthless.

BEEdwards··on Is everything falling apart?
So in your "not pro-slavery" view police are allowed to summarily execute people on the street?

That's what your stated "taboo truth" amounts too, it's fine for police to kill people as long as you have judged them worthy of death.

BEEdwards··on Is everything falling apart?
Yeah, that's why they are constantly trying to kill each other...
BEEdwards··on I'm a scam prevention expert and I got scammed
This happened to me the other day too!

Different bank, but they had all the basic information, but then started asking for information that I know they don't need (secret questions and answers) and when I told them it was sus they hung up.

BEEdwards··on ‘Space cleaner’ satellite spotted grabbing and throwing away old satellite
He's trading possible accent issues for me (and a lot of people) refusing to watch the video.

If your video has a robotic voice I assume it's spam, worse the voice is so annoying that I won't stay around long enough to find out otherwise.

BEEdwards··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
"Maybe they were assholes, but I don't give a shit how nice the developers who made my web browser are."

There coworkers do though, assholes have a right to exist and others have a right to not want to work with them.

BEEdwards··on Who Got It Right: Orwell or Huxley?
That's not newspeak, the aim of which was to obviate and dumb down words.

This is more precise speak, it gives the actual definition instead of a broad term.

BEEdwards··on Everything must be paid for twice
But that's not a price, I enjoy reading, that what I paid for.

It is not something that costs me anything other than time, however that's not the "price" he's talking about. Otherwise "low price pleasures" wouldn't be a category, if you enjoy that time it's not marginally better than nothing.

BEEdwards··on My First Impressions of Web3
>The upcoming generation..even the 'non-tech' people are tech-savvy, meaning most could probably get arch linux up and running at least via a distro or follow the docs, etc...where there parents would fail.

I don't know what members of the upcoming generation you're dealing with, but the ones I know are more computer illiterate than their parents.

Their parents played games on dos and had to configure shit, the kids use their phone for everything and don't know how to use computers beyond a basic level.

BEEdwards··on Why don't you accept donations?
Working for free devalues the work of others and give them an excuse to not even offer pay next time.
BEEdwards··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
>Half of my Twitter feed is profile pics of NFTs being displayed prominently.

And I could in 30 seconds, find the most expensive nft, copy the image and use that as my profile picture...

BEEdwards··on Feasibility of a Dune Ornithopter
I disagree, I liked the dragonfly inspired ornithopter.

Maybe not as originally envisioned, but I like the aesthetic.

BEEdwards··on Every search bar looks like a URL bar to users
"A Closed and Common Orbit", the second in the series) is my favorite book ever.
BEEdwards··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
Which is a move the mostly vaccinated are fine with, because we're really done with the idiocy.

Fuck off and die somewhere else, seems to be the general sentiment of people I know.

BEEdwards··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
I say it from my own personal experience as a light skinned black person, I've seen how the police laser focus on my dark skinned friends and, I've seen the subtle differences in behavior displayed by white people in their presents.

So yes they are lucky to have not experienced it.

BEEdwards··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
Got it, acknowledging that racism exists is the same as racism...

I mean it's not like people with ethnic names have to whiten them to get job opportunities.

https://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/minorities-who-whiten-job-resumes...

or home appraisals double when someone conceals their race

https://www.npr.org/2021/05/21/998536881/a-black-woman-says-...

Nope, pointing it out is the racism, let's just not discuss it.

BEEdwards··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
>I went to a very white, quite red Virginia public school 30 years ago and nobody ever told me about brown skin being bad.

Then you got very very lucky. It has been an issue for a very long time.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/apr/09/coloris...

it was a problem long before the modern era.

Preparing kids for the real world seems like a good education strategy to me...

BEEdwards··on Amazon’s answer to delivery driver shortage: Pot smokers
Other places that don't' drug test and you'll probably be paid better and not work in sweatshop like conditions - most office jobs...
BEEdwards··on China has forbidden under-18s from playing games for more than three hours/week
I don't know much about youth culture in China, maybe all their teens are well behaved and obedient...

But my working experience is largely with "transition" students in America and can tell you that rules like this are like commanding the tide not to go out. At best you teach them that your rules are arbitrary and give them a framework for subverting them, they may just reject your authority outright and then you've got nothing...

BEEdwards··on Joe Rogan, confined to Spotify, is losing influence
Same thing happened to Howard Stern when he moved to XM (or Sirrus, which ever one won that war I have no idea what's going on in the satellite radio space), moving from an open broadcast to a pay to listen will always cut you off from all but your most devoted fans and prevent a lot of organic discovery.
BEEdwards··on Please Bring Back Our Downvotes: Society Desperately Needs It
In the default subs sure, but if you're subscribed to those shitholes you get what you get.
BEEdwards··on JPEG XL
OBS works great for screenshoting videos.
BEEdwards··on Virtual reality ads make their way to Facebook's Oculus headsets
That's worse...

Can't even use escapist reality to escape from ads now.

BEEdwards··on Uber charges driver for completing a 13-mile fare
A villain don't have to be evil, apathy that causes harm is enough.
