BBC-vs-neolibs··on How we bootstrapped our SaaS to $1M ARR
So if I start with $1M of my own money, is it bootstrapped?

If family (with fuzzy conditions) ponied up $250k, is it bootstrapped?

BBC-vs-neolibs··on Aviation Safety Whistleblower Report on 737 Max [pdf]
It's not quite like that.

It's not that 1967 design is unsafe, nor that the MAX design is unsafe.

The problem is that 737 pilots were allowed to fly MAX max without recertification. A recert would cost a lot for the airlines, so Boeing pushed the idea that MAX is a drop-in replacement for the vanilla 737.

The whole idea was to make a more efficient version of the 737 with no substantial changes in flight characteristics. As it turns out, the change in behaviour is substantial.

The foul play is Boeing pushing the regulatory agency in the US around, and the agency succumbing to it.

BBC-vs-neolibs··on Betting on things that never change (2017)
Kodak actually tried hard to bank on digital and made great digital sensors, but the world went too fast with digital. Their projections were off by a number of years. They thought film was going to gradually decline, not drop off a cliff.

A brief comparison distinguishing it from Cython would be most welcome.

BBC-vs-neolibs··on Pyjion – A Python JIT Compiler
Why is there so little mention of https://cython.org/ ?

It's very fast, it compiles to C code, then compiles the C code with a normal compiler.

Yep. It's also a general signal that you'r a good actor willing to do the work. An observer with no interaction can see what you did for the librarians and put in a good word for you somewhere without you ever even knowing.

BBC-vs-neolibs··on On Logic, and How Not to Do It (1913)
You confound complexes and sums. (The preamble and the article comprises the web page, but the web page is not a complex of the article and itself.)
BBC-vs-neolibs··on 'Dieselgate' trial opens in Germany without ex-VW boss
I think it is some kind of manslaughter or willful negligence.

If a local government enacted a law for factories that they should all have fire sprinklers installed, to save x number of lives per year.

Then the a factory operator decides to pretend they installed sprinklers, but did not.

Shouldn't they be culpable for excess death?

I think it's similar here - the EU mandated a safety measure (a certain limit on NOx and particles), the car companies merely pretended to comply.

Capacitors can be bad but look perfectly fine.

If there aren't many, one can just replace all of them.

BBC-vs-neolibs··on How to properly load a dishwasher (2020)
If your pipes are not insulated, the dishwasher might get only room temperature water anyway.

Also, district heating - it depends. In the winter, they run this district heating not only for electricity, but ramp it up for more heat production, in the winter.

The idea is to detonate it before you exit the area. Not leaving booby traps.
BBC-vs-neolibs··on First detection of light from behind a black hole
I was naïvely disappointed that the light was not from beyond the event horizon, but instead some kind of gravitational lensing. It was not the "regular" gravitational lensing but something much more exotic, but still, I was disappointed it was not some kind of Star-Trek level beoynd the event horizon information peeking through. :-D

IMHO you knew, but you scoffed that it couldn't do serious computing like an IBM. It could only handle games.

Some didn't realise that games are pretty taxing on the hardware, but I need to let that go, it's been three decades now. :)

BBC-vs-neolibs··on HK media erase their archives amid rising arrests
As I remember it, the protests were incredibly downplayed or ignored in the media, in ways I think would be impossible now.

Cellphone footage of the protests would emerge now. I don't know if this would have changed anything, but I often wonder.

I felt alone and only later learned there had been large protests basically everywhere.

BBC-vs-neolibs··on A Plea for Lean Software (1995) [pdf]
Others have already pointed to the distinction between code duplication and runtime duplication.

Regarding the development experience:

I think it's a tug and back-and-forth kind of dynamic.

Modularity has exactly the kind of effect you talk about, until it doesn't.

At some point, the cost of communication (between people!) responsible for different modules can increase until it's a net negative to try to adapt a module, or even find out it exists and is suitable.

Of course, a monolithic project of comparable size has likely collapsed from its weight into a ball of mud.

Development tools have come quite a ways, but the science of getting teams to develop software together, perhaps not so much.

BBC-vs-neolibs··on I Will Never Use a Microsoft Account to Log Into My Own PC
This is an uncelebrated (accidental) security feature. One of the most secure "burner" devices there are, is an iPhone or iPad with no iCloud configuration.

Good for semi-anonymous browsing for instance, also because fingerprinting of the browser looks the same as a bunch of other iOS devices.
