Avicebron··on The death of web development education
This has been my experience as well as someone who uses the frontier models quite a bit, I think it's easier than ever to deceive myself into thinking I'm being productive or learning. I've noticed it in others as well.

Part of it is shear volume of "stuff" that I'm doing on the fly while leaning on AI as a crutch for speed (otherwise why wouldn't I just do it myself), the other part is that it's ephemeral, even if you read all the lines of code, it's hard to beat manually typing them yourself for retention _and_ failing at it, and being forced to teach myself what I did wrong.

All that's to say, I think AI psychosis can happen at a group level.

Avicebron··on FTC is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over product risks
Well you see, you just frame your ethics that anything done in service to the bottom line is inherently good. Easy as, anyone complaining about rapacious behavior or a decrease in their quality of life is the real evil (tm)
Avicebron··on An AI sovereign wealth fund isn't progressive – it's techno-imperialism
To play devils advocate, the fact Norway has a coherent society/population makes it dictatorship of the demos. Which of course is evil since people who refuse to integrate into society aren't allowed to dicate terms.

Avicebron··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
It's crazy how articles like this get spawn-camped by people like this trying to throw this zinger in. Both AI conpanies in the US and the chinese companies with ccp desks in the corner can be bad. The good path forward is locally hosted AI models, that's known.
Avicebron··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
Right, but people are spending for resilience anyway in places like Vermont, it's a way to harvest that money.
Avicebron··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
It's more economically optimal to convince wealthy Vermonters to house the batteries by branding it as subsidized resilience than it is to buy and maintain substations?

In no particular order:

- get rid of the suggested, stories, news feeds, widgets

- fix the update schedule so it doesn't brick randomly during the day until I restart it

- get rid of accounts, ship a password manager extension by default if people can't be bothered to use one (I know accounts are here to stay, just make them... less)

- When I download a browser I don't want 20 forced popups/check boxes asking me to import this, import that, sign in, improve my experience, make default, get rid of all of it

Inequality has eroded trust in society in ~50 years, a lot of the old models (heh) of how we see the world aren't relevant. It's hard to exist when everything around us is adversarial.

Avicebron··on Who should be held accountable when an AI Agent (accidentally) acts maliciously?
> you weren’t reckless

I feel like the debate is going to come down to what is and isn't considered reckless (both developer and user). Which seems... complicated, with our current LLM/agentic systems.

EDIT: you added more to your comment, the makers have to have some liability. Safe-harbor best practices that cap liability are ripe for abuse.

Avicebron··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
The might or might not is a critical part of why the panopticon works..
Avicebron··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
Or more broadly, LLMs fundamentally don't "understand". They can simulate understanding and generate text/code/whatever, but they don't have will to engage with something holistically and "own" it.
Avicebron··on Tells of a Slop UI
To be fair, your blog has the opposite issue, with the sidenotes forcing me to zoom in to read the text on mobile.

I'll admit that the blog I linked doesn't handle code blocks gracefully specifically on mobile, it's fine on the desktop.

Avicebron··on There are no "rogue" AI agents
It's making some people extremely rich. That's how it makes sense. Unless we can effect change through the government we are just along for the ride..

Avicebron··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
One of the weirdest things I noticed when people around me started having kids was how immediately they picked up on their parents obsession with their phones, and would instinctively try to interact with them.

It was odd, disheartening and almost universal (barring the parents who went full 'my kid doesn't use any of the products I build')

Avicebron··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
You make it sounds like you're being sarcastic. But I would argue that ubiquitous digital interfaces demanding our attention is wreaking havoc on people's focus.
Avicebron··on FTC chair suggests AI developers should be liable for conduct of agents
I mean there aren't many good options are there, AI can't be held accountable and face meaningful consequences for it's actions. Therefore, where consequences are appropriate, who is ultimately responsible for "their actions?"
Avicebron··on Altman-backed Praxis plans a $1B AI-powered town in Uruguay
> say they could be essential laboratories for governance that could help cut through bureaucratic red tape to accelerate technological innovation.

I'm taking an educated guess that rights and managing negative externalities is the "bureaucratic red tape" they are concerned about.

Avicebron··on Too AI; Didn't Read
> wide appeal or value to a lot of people.

I'm curious what value you think people are getting by being able to spew out large amounts of low to mid quality writing. I'm not saying we should complain about AI in general, just how some people use it.

> maybe you can offer an example where it played out like that for something that had a wide appeal or value to a lot of people

Sure, the French aristocracy had wide appeal and value for a lot of people, complaining played a part in keeping their behavior from becoming normalized even further.

Avicebron··on Too AI; Didn't Read
Part of not allowing it to become normalized is complaining about it..

> The idea that land is not a pure asset leads to regular feudalism.

Yup. And despite the claims made that it's a solution for the common folk, the people who "own" and can make decisions about the land will be the megarich, so it will be feudalism, with rent due on the land you own.
