He has said, although i can't recall where, that "far beyond the sun" is his favorite piece to play

So what's the answer to smoothing out supply and demand peaks here? More and better batteries? Wind, hydro, etc? All the above?

I think he's pretty well analyzed it. Personally, I've had to drive a car full of toddlers with no heat in winter because my touch screen gave out and it was unsafe both to pull over and to try and troubleshoot while driving. This happened in a 2023 model year high end minivan. My 2009 mazda POS with physical knobs has never had a single problem in over an order of magnitude more time.

There is a scifi novel from the 80s or 90s employing a ~somewhat~ similar plot device for a human, although the name now escapes me. Ring a bell with anyone?

Wow. Hagiographic would be an understatement

With no evidence to offer I strongly suspect this is the biggest piece of it

>And, of course, educated women become able to sell services/goods that allow them to be financially independent, so as to not be coercible.

Tried and true birth rate reduction method

Ex-husband narrowly survives a sudden and serious GI illness after weeks of intensive care. A year later, his parents and another couple die or nearly die after dinner with his wife, becoming suddenly and violently ill while she and her children are unharmed.

Curious.

Do you happen to have a yogurt instant pot recipe you'd recommend?

Thank God no Russians have died in this "proxy war" they were so unable to avoid

Would it be too invasive to ask the country you moved to, from someone with some similar history?

Dallas Buyers' Club was a thing because of governmental/societal prejudice against HIV/AIDS victims which itself stemmed from Christian bigotry towards gay people

That's The Band, not CCR, if I recall correctly. Great song

>I suspect one of the reasons "stolen election" conspiracy theories are so popular right now is that the alternative is one must simply be skeptical of the good judgment of one's neighbors, and people don't want to live like that

I suspect it's because the major politicians of one of the two major parties overwhelmingly tell them it was. Trump says so, the Republicans who follow him say so, and the alternative is to acknowledge the guys you support are trying to overthrow the government, so it must be "true".

I will make a bold prediction and say we won't find out all art is money laundering and wash sales soon.

Libertarian tech bros don't like progressive politics as a general rule

215 (96.4%) of 223 Republican Representatives voted for the resolution. 82 (39.2%) of 209 Democratic Representatives voted for the resolution. 6 (<2.7%) of 223 Republican Representatives voted against the resolution: Reps. The only Independent Representative voted against the resolution: Rep. Sanders (I-VT) Reps. Ortiz (D-TX), Roukema (R-NJ), and Stump (R-AZ) did not vote on the resolution.

29 (58%) of 50 Democratic senators voted for the resolution. 48 (98%) of 49 Republican senators voted for the resolution. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorization_for_Use_of_Milit...

Personally, I might be biased by my personal friendship with Kosovar Muslims, but I view the NATO interventions in Kosovo as a pretty unambiguously good thing. No idea whether this sentiment will be popular here. They ended a genocide and acted within clear guidelines with international unity.

Epic expanded into the Nordics and their providers found it disastrous on the whole, mostly because it's designed for the US healthcare system and therefore cares almost exclusively about billing, which is completely irrelevant for them. See https://www.politico.com/story/2019/06/06/epic-denmark-healt...

I'm fond of W59.22XA, "struck by turtle - initial encounter" aka the Aeschylus ICD code

The first point he raises is the most critical by far. The silverbacks of the industry deliberately stymie efforts for true interoperability because it goes directly against their primary goal, which is forcing everyone into their platform. Epic in particular has zero intention of allowing anyone else to take their market share by enabling easy sharing of data across platforms. It's far better for them from a business perspective to make interfacing so unreasonably difficult that you are forced to implement their full suite of applications, at which point they hold your organization's data hostage to induce other orgs to do the same. The larger their ecosystem grows, the less they need to worry about interoperability - improving patients' outcomes is not even an afterthought. Their vision of population health reporting is one in which every major healthcare org has been trapped inside their walled garden.

My family member worked as a petroleum geologist for Exxon-Mobil for many years, and he is fond of talking about how the climate has changed dramatically throughout the earth's history as a sort of defense against any discussion of climate change. That those changes historically went very poorly for the organisms living in affected areas doesn't seem to faze him, as though we should be desirous of a new Permian extinction. I've come to the conclusion it's a defense mechanism for him psychologically, to avoid having to acknowledge that his life's work served to destroy the natural world and threaten the peaceful existence of his descendants.

It's funny, whataboutism was always touted as the preferred tactic of Russian trolls, but I never had the chance to actually see them deploy it on a relevant topic. Now that there is one, my God, they're shameless, aren't they? To the point where if an actual human said these things to you in person you'd recommend a psychiatrist to them.

But forget about all that, what about the Monroe doctrine?

The user in question spends an awful lot of time arguing that the West/Ukraine/NATO/insert current scapegoat of Russian propaganda is the reason why dear sweet Russia just had no choice but to invade.

That's the beauty of it. When winter rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

Absolutely, feel free to peruse my comment history for examples right here on this site.

It's also a wasted opportunity just from a competitive standpoint. Brain draining the shit out of Russia is a totally valid strategy that boosts the host nation while hindering Russia.

Anyone who has worked in public leadership will recognize that Zelensky has been putting on a diplomacy/PR/propaganda masterclass. His decisions and actions will be studied for a long time to come as an example of how to gain and exert soft power, and how to translate soft power to material power.

Thank you very much for the perspective, I think people all around the world are shocked at his brazenness and even people who were "right" about his plans are horrified to be so.
