AustinGibbons··on Ask HN: How do you apply for a tech job?
If you wish to target post-round startups, it can be a little bit easier to contact a vc firm's talent team (such as: http://a16z.com/talent-services/) who, if you pass whatever conversation / interview they give you, can recommend you to good fits within their portfolio.
AustinGibbons··on Interns: Everything you need to know about a summer in the Bay Area in one place
Missing my personal piece of advice: Interested in startups / smaller companies? Easiest thing to do is email / interview with one or two VC firms. I know both a16z and greylock do this, I'm sure others do as well.
AustinGibbons··on Harlem Shake - For Website
Confusing if you try to go to hacker news, I recommend imgur.com :-)

AustinGibbons··on Learning how to attract women to web development
There are dozens of claims that it is good for women - STEM is a desirable field - yet artificial barriers to entry are created by gender roles.

Further, women in technology and leadership positions has been correlated with business success: http://reclaimingleadership.com/why-you-need-women-leading-i...

AustinGibbons··on Hamed Helped. Help Hamed.
I don't understand how using an external attack tool is grounds for anything. If Hamed could use it to search for exploits an attacker could have used it to search for exploits.

Especially if a students' information had been previously exposed and the attacker had access to everyone's personal information / passwords!

-- Edit : after reading his expulsion letter, it seems he supposedly injected SQL on both occasions. One imagines they strictly forbid him from doing so again. Sure, he probably should have asked for a sandbox system if he wanted to do ad hoc security research, but it is still quite a logical leap to actually expel him.

AustinGibbons··on Facebook Announces Its Third Pillar, "Graph Search"
A lot of hate for graph search going on but I am pretty excited.

> photos I like taken in New York in 2010 - great way to find something again without filtering through activity log or remembering (all the) details

> friends in Austin, Texas - because _people move_ and I travel

> friends who like ultimate frisbee - I meet a lot of people and play a lot of frisbee, it would be stellar to have an auto-populated list of friends (not just the regulars) who would be down to play

> friends who like Book of Mormon - who should I be asking for a recommendation?

> people who going to event X and event Y - now we can carpool

> people in group X and group Y and group Z - similarly

> Stephanie who went to Mike's event and is friends with James - use case from below (that I encounter about once a month) of trying to find someone with a sparsity of details.

I can't think of any way to (nearly as easily) get this information without graph search, and frankly I think it's awesome.

That makes a lot of sense! thanks for the link :-)
AustinGibbons··on Amazon to Provide CD Buyers With Cloud-Based MP3s For Free
A lot of comments about how no one owns a CD, its a waste of resources yada yada yada

For me, I own a car from 2001 so CDs are great. I buy CDs at concerts/shows, as I've long surpassed the appropriate number of t-shirts to own. I like supporting the artist, particularly if the artist is doing a signing. My girlfriend buys CDs, from Amazon, just because she likes having a physical things. She has been griping that it is a pain to her that she has to rip/burn it herself!

AustinGibbons··on Show HN: Visualizing the iOS App Store via D3.js
Sorry for coming down harsh but I don't understand how to interpret any of the individual curves, since it looks like they are five points on five different axis with a curve fit through them. What's the significance?
AustinGibbons··on Show HN: Tempo, a simple way to visualize how much email you get
I archive everything re: the "inbox zero" lifestyle (http://inboxzero.com/) and when i click see my results it is just a blank page.

I would be really interested if you could pull from my archives! :-)

AustinGibbons··on Time Warner Cable drops Ovation and Current TV
Perhaps less popular in this audience, but it hard to find many live streaming sports (legally) without a cable subscription. The Rose Bowl, for example, was on ESPN yesterday and they did not offer a live stream, afaik.
AustinGibbons··on How I got a $3,500 USD Facebook Bug Bounty
Bummer to hear, I too reported a privacy setting circumvention, and I did receive compensation. I think a big part of it is being the first person to report the error.
AustinGibbons··on Sure, Big Data Is Great. But So Is Intuition.
The article steers the reader, wanting them to conclude that there is something wrong with data science as a field that is solved by _human_ intuition - this left me feeling much the way any science fiction movie makes me feel: no matter what mothership, demigod, or alien species they encounter, _humans_ will emerge victorious. Fine for a science fiction story, but not quite so believable in this context, where little evidence is offered.
AustinGibbons··on Show HN: DataFart - easy command line graphing
A cool tool with an unfortunate name. I'm not going to send a link to datafart.com/mygraph to someone with whom I only have a professional relationship.
AustinGibbons··on Stanford MBA price tag hits $185K: Highest in the world
I am a Stanford, but not in the MBA program. My understanding is that many students do pay full tuition. Graduating with an MBA from the GSB guarantees that you will find a high paying job that makes it well worth it. To put it one way, my one friend asked an MBA student friend "how does everyone in the GSB afford such nice cars while paying MBA tuition?" "When you are already paying 200 grand, whats an extra 50 thousand?" I think its very revealing of the mindset. Another interesting stat : 40% of incoming MBA students say they want to found a startup. Ultimately only 2% do. The reason for the differential not being for failure to do so, but for being unwilling to turn down lucrative job offers.
AustinGibbons··on Zuckerberg visits Stanford CS106A third year in a row
While not being able to comment on 6.001, at Stanford there is an alternative for ``enthusiasts'' called 106X, which is a sort of more intense version of the 106B class and is taught in C++ I believe. Some students skip A/B and just take X. A, B and X all get really good reviews.

AustinGibbons··on Google Fiber is live in Kansas City, real-world speeds at 700 Mbps
The politicians in KC greatly supported the movement in an effort to boost entrepreneurship in KC. They are working on a program called LaunchKC (http://launchkc.com/) to foster tech innovation
AustinGibbons··on Exec launches professional cleaning service
For everyone quoting super low numbers:

I live in a dorm at Stanford University. I have contacted about a dozen different services looking for someone to clean my 300 square foot studio. The _cheapest_ thing I have found is $65, with the range being about $65 -> 120

Is it because I don't live in a city? I am seriously confused.

AustinGibbons··on Wikipedia Is Nearing Completion, in a Sense
I did some research on the declining editor rates for a course project. Without recreating our entire paper, I want to make this important point. Wikipedia is not (necessarily) nearing the completion of all knowledge, but rather what is feasible for its editors to contribute - indeed, there is much work to be done on "the history of sanitation and sewage in ancient Carthage" and "topic sensitive page rank", which at least has a page, let alone "trust sensitive page rank" which seems to be missing one. Our core piece of evidence was observing the _same_ trends across different languages (in both # edits and # page views). If you are interested, check out our final report here - it has its flaws, but I believe the three pieces of evidence we explored hold some merit in their own right. AustinGibbons··on Facebook, I want my friends back

AustinGibbons··on Parallella: A Supercomputer For Everyone
If you like Amdahl's law you may also like... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustafsons_law

It is a more powerful expression of the benefit of scaling with parallelism. Principally, instead of scaling speed with respect to a fixed data size, you scale the data size with respect to a fixed speed.

Having more cores means you (sometimes) can have more data. You still need those parallel programmers with their parallel algorithms though :-)

AustinGibbons··on Vic Gundotra reports Google+ passing 100,000,000 monthly active users
I'm not saying 100,000 is an unfair statistic, but what I meant to get at instead was growth through g+ versus inclusion through tack-on services (a totally valid and excellent way to bring users into your product :-) as I tend to agree with some of the other comments describing it as "the path of least resistance" for sharing content through google.

AustinGibbons··on Ask HN: very qualified but can't find a decent job. What do I do wrong?
Anecdotally, I know some recruiters who are timid on recruiting technical people for engineering roles under the premise that after being in industry this long the person should have become a manager or a VP of Eng. type or CTO type more than a senior engineer.
