AustinDizzy··on Student-Built Apps Teach Colleges a Thing or Two
I've done something similar, although not directly interactive to course registration and classes yet.

My university, West Virginia University, was granted a few hundred million dollars by the US DOT and President Nixon back in the early 1970s to create a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) [0] system that would transport handfuls of students to and from the various campuses and other locations in the city. Built by Boeing and NASA JPL in the 70s, the overall system hasn't seen a large system overhaul since then. Because of that, it tends to go down often during the middle of the day, leaving students stranded at the various stations with no way to get to and from the various campuses for classes.

I, relying heavily on the PRT, built an app that monitors the PRT uptime status and alerts users [1]. This comes in handy all the time as it notifies students that the PRT is down typically before any announcements are ever made at the stations, allowing students to plan transportation ahead of time and catch the correct bus to the campus.

The app made it to my university's news [2], the city's student run newspaper [3], and I've gotten a few hundred users within the first week of operation.

The app is completely free and open source, written in Go [4] for the server logic and Java for the Android client [5]. And it also supports Android wearables and Google Glass. Please feel free to submit pull requests and issues as you see fit, I'm trying to improve the Go component's error handling, http.Client connections, and MongoDB database sessions/connections.

Unrelated to the PRT Status app, I'm planning on making a web app that allows students to register for courses in the view of a calendar. Currently, our registration system kinda sucks in that you have to write out course times and do somewhat intensive planning to make sure your proposed classes don't interfere with other class times. So my idea is to let the students choose the courses they need, and then the service will automatically generate multiple possible schedules in a week calendar view that shows block times and course registration numbers should they choose that schedule configuration.

In all reality it's just hopping on the Yo bandwagon. A few serious reasons I can see is what if someone doesn't want to install the PayPal, Strip, or Coinbase app? This also keeps all your notifications for various feed services in one place.

I don't understand the hype at all, or even how Yo is at a $10mm evaluation, but I digress.

I really wish Google would update that page with Android Wear (square and round) renders. I know they've got them, because they used them on their promotional image for the I/O 2014 app: https://github.com/google/iosched/blob/master/art/hero.png

The tracking beacon is harmless, I actually think the feature is pretty cool. And it looks like Mozilla's MDN uses non-opting tracking beacons as well: https://github.com/mozilla/kuma/issues/1985

So there's no need to file an issue with the same company who does the same thing on their developer network.

I'm using AOL's Project Phoenix with an @wow.com email address. I've seen a good amount of obvious spam flow past my spam box, so that oughta tell you enough.
AustinDizzy··on Go North Korea Beat Portugal in the World Cup final tomorrow
The video was deemed fake:

"Hi Moderator of /r/NorthKoreaNews here!

This is bullshit of the highest magnitude.

The South Korean and Japanese press monitor broadcasts from North Korea and they're silent on this claim. North Korea has already publicly announced their support for the the South Korean team - http://world.kbs.co.kr/english/news/news_IK_detail.htm?No=10.... Even more importantly the North Koreans are actually able to watch the World Cup on State TV - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPyHoDcwbzE. Football is extremely popular even in North Korea.

The only evidence here is this Youtube video that seems cleverly spliced together from stock footage of North Korean Media."

AustinDizzy··on Twitter bot that tweets Wikipedia edits made from IP addresses of Congress
It'd also be interesting to see what IPs from the FCC and NSA's ranges edit.
AustinDizzy··on HN. Let's share Twitter accounts
I tweet at https://twitter.com/AustinDizzy

On the interesting scale, I'd be a "meh." I do lots of information security, currently for a top-tier university. And I'm also a contracted web developer, currently specializing in Node.js and Go. So that's something.

AustinDizzy··on Amazon orders subject to replacement fraud (still)
It's because they didn't want to alert you of the charge. Coming from a previous blackhat, the last thing a blackhat would want to do is alert you that something is happening. How often do you check your bank account? Probably once a day, maybe more. How often do you check your Amazon? Maybe only when you're going to buy things. I have my accounts set to text/notify me with every transaction detail.

Another reason why it'd be a replacement is because you don't get charged anything directly. They're betting you see the $0.00 charge, no bank activity, and you'll just brush it off like it was just a glitch. Not only this, but half the people who do this aren't even 18 and they're just reading tutorials on forums for how to get free stuff by social engineering or "hacking."

AustinDizzy··on ArchiveTeam rescues Justin.tv videos
How can videos with at least 10 views also have zero views? The ArchiveTeam is only keeping videos with at least 10 views because the total size of those videos with less than 10 views is 1.01 Petabyte.

Or just count the number of <tr> elements and subtract one to account for the table header. That's what I did to find the average race.

And most were White males.

  Blacks: 190 (36.89%)
  White: 230 (44.66%)
  Hispanics: 92 (17.86%)
  Other: 2 (0.39%)

Maybe replacing the pinch with a swipe down or a pull down on the icon will make it easier for users with sausage fingers. The icon could then fold out from both sides like a card instead of just growing with the stretch out.

Replace the colors with patterns in a colorblind mode (e.g. A left striped replaces blue, a right striped replaces green, a vertical striped for red, a right horizontal stripe with dots in the brighter spaces for yellow, etc.).

When you hear it that way, it sounds like the spawn of the VR world called Society seen in the movie Gamer.
AustinDizzy··on Xkcd/now
It's not a gif, he's just got ~96 images or so all of each hour in 15 minute intervals and then it loads the appropriate one for the appropriate time.

I wrote up a small demo here(http://jsfiddle.net/5uG2u/2/show/) so you can change the time and see the various mapped layouts of the data.

AustinDizzy··on University of Maryland Data Breach
Information Security Operations for a tier-1 university here. If the university is public, which most are, they require SSN documentation to report to the state as technically your taxes helped pay for that school. This is all tied up in politics and documentation for everything really, but that's just how the politics seem to work. They are also required to file their assessment of your fees and tuition to the IRS via a 1098-T form.

Also you are awarded various small hidden grants on your tuition payments if you've a valid SSN as your taxes (or your future taxes) went towards that school's funding.
