AstroJetson··on Motorola, Intel, IBM Make a Mainframe in a PC – The PC XT/370
At one point Burroughs did the same thing, there was a chip version of the Burroughs A Series processor. Soon after Intel chips became much more powerful and they could run a software emulation.
AstroJetson··on Your Biggest Customer Might Be Your Biggest Bottleneck
Actually in the US the dealers have their own queue and workers. Not sure why these people didn’t know how that works.
AstroJetson··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
Are people not doing Hipster PDA on 3x5 cards??
AstroJetson··on My DIY modular charging station
I have the same thing. You can find a variety of drawer pulls that work for you. I used ones that have ends sticking out. That way I can wrap the excess cable. They are called Bar Pulls, and mine have a 1” extension on both ends.
AstroJetson··on Ask HN: What old or outdated software have you never found a replacement for?
Can you say more about outlines in older versions of word? I use Word2019 (local install) and it works for me. What am I missing?
AstroJetson··on TikTok is being flooded with racist AI videos generated by Google's Veo 3
Just watched Mountainhead about this very topic. The AI videos were good enough to start wars, topple banking systems and countries.

It is very scary because the "tech-bros" in the movie pretty much mimic the actions of the real life ones.

AstroJetson··on Fun with uv and PEP 723
> uv is an extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust.

Is there a version of uv written in Python? It's weird (to me) to have an entire ecosystem for a language and a highly recommended tool to make your system work is written in another language.

AstroJetson··on GitHub issues is almost the best notebook in the world
I always wonder when I see all these best notebooks / note taking systems, etc. why people don't spin up any of the dozens of wiki servers.

You can put it online so you can get to it anywhere

You can run it off a stick to keep it with you (Tiddlywiki)

You can cross link pages to be able to collect things together

You can search. Some even have auto link builders so you can build a page of links to pages that match a category.

Some support Markup so you have formatting the way you want.

AstroJetson··on Show HN: DaedalOS – Desktop Environment in the Browser
It's very cool. Love the Winamp and Doom throwbacks, it was fun to play Doom for a little bit.

Congrats on the Webby nomination!

AstroJetson··on Sketchy Calendar
Your best bet is the pocketmod site: https://pocketmod.com/

I use the offline version of the pocketmod program, I create a 8 page doc, print in PDF, then pocketmod changes that PDF into a single page that can be printed and folded.

AstroJetson··on Sketchy Calendar
A Pocket Mod is an 8 page book. I use two pages in Calendar format for big events, ie Birthdays, dinners, doctors, etc.

My calendar is pretty much set for the week. There are 4 pages that cover the weekly schedule, 2 days per page. There is blank space on the bottom half of the last page to put reminders for the next week.

This leaves me 2 pages for todo-lists.

You can make the 8 pages anyway you want, print them as a 8 page PDF document. The Pocket Mod program then rearrange the pages into the right format for folding.

If I need to create a new one it's under a minute to run the process, fold and cut the book.

AstroJetson··on Sketchy Calendar
I use pocket mod and make a custom 8 page todo/calendar that I use every day. It works well for me, but I’ve also adapted my life to the way it works.
AstroJetson··on A Tiny Boltzmann Machine
The key takeaways are that there are lots of people involved with making these breakthroughs.

The value of grad students is often overlooked, they contribute so much and then later on advance the research even more.

Why does America look on research as a waste, when it has move everything so far?

AstroJetson··on Coffee for people who don't like coffee
I would love to find Decaf cold brew, but it seems the only way is homemade. I do miss coffee after 20+ years. I grew up on “field engineering blend” where it poured like 40 weight motor oil.

Ditto on getting older sucks, but I’ve been told not getting older sucks worse.

AstroJetson··on TPSV, an Alternative to TSV (and CSV)
> A row with too many cells has the superfluous cells ignored.

Ummm, how do you figure out what row has too many cells? Can all the rows before this one have too few cells?

AstroJetson··on Do charity bookshops drive out other second-hand bookshops?
I bought Lego on Tuesday at the Goodwill on Philadelphia Pike in Wilmington. So you just need to look on a regular cycle.
AstroJetson··on 'Trump Gaza' AI video intended as political satire, says creator
Exactly, it scary to wake up and see your yard full of “Free Gaza” supporters while a team of executives from Kiewit Construction are knocking at your door.
AstroJetson··on Ways to annoy your senior engineer
I fixed giving “napkin” or “rough estimate” times out. I roll a D6 for number of people, D12 for number of months, D20 for the day we will go to production ( not allowed to do installation during end of month). D% is used to say how accurate the estimate is. With the requester there, I pull them out, roll them, give the estimate.

I did have a VP in a meeting go “I don’t like that estimate.” I pushed the dice over and said “Ok, you roll”. Their hand got about 1/2 way before their brain caught on to what was happening and they pulled their hand back.

We normally agree on them writing a 2-3 page scope and I do an estimate based off the scope. Slow learners ask, How long to get the estimate, I look them dead in the eye and reach for the dice again saying “I’d like to see the scope beforehand but ....”

AstroJetson··on TOML [Tom's Obvious Minimal Language]
I still like using Lua as my .ini file data source. I can use a wide range of inputs from numbers to tables. Parsing the file is easy, and getting it into another program is less work that trying to add a parser.
AstroJetson··on Bookshop.org launches Kindle alternative, sends e-book sales to local bookstores
Now I'm sad. It reminds me of this chart that shows that 10 companies own a huge swath of the major brands. https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/11dvx...
AstroJetson··on Show HN: I Built a Reddit-style Bluesky client – still rough, but open to ideas
I still mourn the loss of Apollo on my iPad. If you are looking for a guide to what worked and was wildly popular, mimic the things from that app.

Your app may be the thing that tips many people into Bluesky.

AstroJetson··on Bookshop.org launches Kindle alternative, sends e-book sales to local bookstores
I use Bookfinder.com on a regular basis to find DRM free dead tree books. It searches across all of the big new/used book vendors and also the smaller “thrift store / Goodwill” book dealers (even eBay buy now) Sorts in New and Used groupings then by price.

But like the software “Quality, Cost, Delivery” triangle, the delivery is 99% by USPS media mail, so it’s 5-7 business days to get the book.

It would be interesting to see Bookshop to hookup with Bookfinder to give them another search method.

AstroJetson··on NOAA's public weather data powers the local forecasts on your phone and TV
Yep, AccuWeather would love to get all of the NWS / NOAA assets and charge everyone to get a forecast.

Thank goodness that the UK and Canadian weather services have great forecasting capabilities, the public can turn to them for our weather needs.

AstroJetson··on Paper Apps
I still make them. Most are todo list things. I have the rule subset for my Robotics competitions for the kids to use since not all of them have phones. I also use them for trips to do plane flights, rental, hotel, dinner places, etc. I’d rather accidentally forget a pocketmod on a rental counter than my phone.
AstroJetson··on Cloudflare R2 Incident on February 6, 2025
Who just got a million dollars worth of training.
AstroJetson··on New Book-Sorting Algorithm Almost Reaches Perfection
Wasn't my intent. The article was "how to do this" with lots of great pictures. Linked page was full of high level math. I was mocking the "This one simple trick can make your shelves full" attitude.

So you answered and I'll ask, "what do they do, it does not seem simple" except for the Database people filling ....

Thanks (former teacher)

AstroJetson··on Harvard-trained expert: I have anxiety
same, UDel trained, this works. It's weird that you can talk to your brain. Oddly your brain can trust you.
AstroJetson··on New book-sorting algorithm almost reaches perfection
Cool. This is Lisa and Laura, they are my two retired teachers that are now helping in the library to sort shelves.

Can you explain to them what you want them to now do?

I read the paper and I would like to say, it's confusing at best. But I'm hoping you can help out.

AstroJetson··on How shut-down Bay Area tech companies ditch their fancy gear
So in the early 2000 Dot Com crash network equipment was the hot item. We did a new startup and got top of the line Cisco gear for pennies on the dollar. The rub came at license time a few years later, Cisco wanted a fortune. We sold the Cisco gear for about what we paid for it and went to Juniper gear, who at the time let the license transfer for free.
AstroJetson··on Designing a Star Tracker for Astronaut Don Pettit to Use on the ISS
So the real magic is the clock mechanism, these guys bolted a 60:90 gear pair and called it a day. How about some kudos to the engineers that made the clock and the company that made them. They can then say to their friends / family, hey one of my clocks is in space. Lots of glory to go around.
