AriedK··on Responses to unicycling
My wife and I did a couple of tandem tours throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. By far the most comments we had were in the UK, the most common being: “she’s not pedalling!” jokingly informing me that my wife who sits at the back isn’t doing her part. The amount of comments were nowhere close what the author describes, and I can’t recall any negative comments. Just humorous ones.

I guess a tandem isn’t as uncommon / funny as a unicycle.

AriedK··on GPT-3.5 crashes when it thinks about useRalativeImagePath too much
Wasn't aware there's a term for it. Thanks for that one!

In WWII in the Netherlands, when encountering a stranger, they'd have them pronounce 'Scheveningen' as a check-phrase to distinguish if they were dealing with a Dutch or German person. Now, we can ask random strangers on the internet to spell out some glitch tokens to determine if you're dealing with a LLM bot.
AriedK··on iPhone that fell from hole in Alaska 737 MAX flight is found, still open to Mail
Especially since they did take the effort to redact the ending numbers of his creditcard number.
AriedK··on A simulation of me: fine-tuning an LLM on 240k text messages
It has been tried. Joshua Barneau tried it with GPT-3, training it on his deceased fiancees text- and facebook messages. It’s a moving read: https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/2021/jessica-simulation... It ‘worked’ for him for a while.
AriedK··on Power over fiber
I find these tremendously helpful https://i.etsystatic.com/13650636/r/il/617182/2062686717/il_... as popularized by AvE
AriedK··on U.S. workers say banned weed killer in 50 countries is giving them Parkinson's
Another listener of Tim Harford's Cautionary Tales? If not, give it a listen! https://timharford.com/2022/11/cautionary-tales-the-inventor... The story of the Radium Girls tell a similar tale. Lick your Radium loaded brush to sharpen the tip, totally fine. Then the company denies all responsibility, and actively oppose concerned workers that start losing teeth, limbs and eventually their lives.
AriedK··on Chicken hypnotism
Tonic immobility is a fascinating phenomenon. From the wikipedia article on it:

“ In an interesting eye witness case off the coast of California, a female orca was seen holding the shark upside down to induce tonic immobility. It kept the shark still for fifteen minutes, causing it to suffocate to death.”

AriedK··on Ozone hole goes large again
https://timharford.com/2022/11/cautionary-tales-the-inventor... This is a podcast worth listening to, on the inventor of CFCs and the global response to the first discovery of the hole in the ozone layer.

I guess they built upon the Voder [1] (Homer Dudley, Bell Labs 1939 as well. But that was played manually, amazing ‘instrument’?

AriedK··on Ampersand (2015)
Earlier discussion, different source, roughly the same information. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32249465
AriedK··on The machines of Tatjana van Vark
These could be the Leonardo da Vincis of this age. They’re quite unique, and have been for centuries.
AriedK··on Ask HN: Would a global catastrophe unite or divide nations?
Agree. It's the onset of the problem that makes it tricky to judge what will happen. Look at the response to the effects of chlorofluorocarbon gasses on the ozone layer. Relatively swift, united action to ban their use, despite having the producers like DuPont doing everything they could to avoid measures, or at least question the fact that CFC gasses were causing something catastrophic. (https://timharford.com/2022/11/cautionary-tales-the-inventor... gives a good insight in the process) I think we're witnessing a similar dynamic with global temperature rises and greenhouse gasses. In this case though, the ones who are negatively affected by preventive measures are the people instead of 1 big company, the cause-effect is disputed more and the onset before we really see the consequences is way longer. Frog, boiling pot, more room for dispute and friction.
AriedK··on DigiKam 7.10.0
Quite a broad statement, what exactly do you mean with interoperate with machine learning? To be fair it’s hidden a bit, but you can use the face training and recognition. https://docs.digikam.org/en/main_window/people_view.html#peo...
AriedK··on Audio engineer explains NPR's signature sound (2015)
I’ve been consistently surprised by the audio quality on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts too. Here’s a video of their audio engineer explaining their setup: https://youtu.be/e07bI5rz6FY
AriedK··on Aicracy – Governed by Algorithms
Don't want to be too critical of (I assume) the students' efforts, but in my opinion the message behind the project is a bit too explicitly translated into the products. It could use a bit more creativity in how they're trying to convey the message translated into everyday (distopian) future life. For instance compare it to the works at https://www.nearfuturelaboratory.com/ like their IKEA catalog of the future. It works better in my opinion to generate discussion rather than having the distopian part expressed so explicitly.
AriedK··on The Inner Beauty of Basic Electronics
The process of making these images is quite an accomplishment. Highly recommend the episode of the embedded.fm podcast with the author of the book, where they go jnto detail explaining what it took.
AriedK··on LoRa: Field Testing Antennas
That will be pretty difficult for LoRa messages without having access to the relevant decryption keys. LoRaWAN is a pretty secure standard.
AriedK··on LoRa: Field Testing Antennas
I know it says Field Testing, but the results aren’t very helpful to find what you’re looking for. The antenna ‘strength’ in every direction. We built a €200 setup that combines a rotating platform, a drone power meter (for 868MHz or 915 in US) hooked up to a yagi antenna, and a network testing device as a reference. At least gives you a decent impression of how well the antenna emits its supplied power, without spending >10k on professional equipment.
AriedK··on Weird monitor bugs people sent me in the last 5 years
This is an issue at our office. We have some cheaper LG monitors that flicker when someone stands up from his gas spring chair. The Dell monitors we have don’t suffer this issue. A paper on the issue: https://www.emcesd.com/pdf/uesd99-w.pdf Apparently a dangling bag of coins can cause similar issues, but haven’t encountered that so far.
AriedK··on Amazon’s Roomba deal is about mapping your home
https://www.vacuumsguide.com/privacy-robot-vacuum-cleaners/ This was already on the radar 5 years ago. Pretty useful data for companies like Ikea to know how people fill their spaces. I am curious if other data is sucked up (now or in the near future). Bluetooth devices in the same room? Wifi SSIDs for precise location? All potentially useful data for a company like Amazon.
AriedK··on The History of ‘Ampersand’ (2020)
I recommend listening to the told version by the Milk Carton Kids (Live From Lincoln Theatre (2014)), and the rest of the album. https://youtu.be/gL8eBrhVTJ4?t=2517 Interesting this article is from 2020, whereas the wikipedia article on the ampersand lists merriam-webster videos from 2014 and 2015 as sources.
AriedK··on The case for bad coffee (2015)
The difference I appreciate the most is the filter of the aeropress that filters all the fine particles that easily make their way through/past a frech press filter.
AriedK··on Ask HN: AI-Generated Music?
https://www.ampermusic.com/ Amper music, owned by Shutterstock, has been around for a while. It was quite nice to play around with when it was still free, not sure if, and how it has evolved over the past years.
AriedK··on Ask HN: Can you help me remove the marks for the airstrikes from Google Maps?
Why is this immediately attributed to Russian troops as markers? Couldn't it also be Ukrainian movements using this for their organization? 'Farms' being code for supply houses?
AriedK··on Show HN: Keyboard Drill – Minimalist Typing Drill to fix common mistakes

AriedK··on PG&E will bury 10k miles of power lines so they don't spark wildfires
https://research.tudelft.nl/en/publications/technical-perfor... Good read if you're interested in the technicalities. They do bury high voltage (380kV) AC lines, sometimes even construct a tunnel for them, but I doubt they'll do that in this case.
AriedK··on Spintronics: Build Mechanical Circuits
Thanks for the recommendation. That cover though, is that topology specific to a coronavirus or do more viruses share it? Especially since the Pfizer/Biontech and Moderna vaccines deploy nano-particles for delivering their payload.
