Speaking of smart speakers, I'm moving to a new flat and I'm looking for some good old dumb speaker setup. The smartest that I'd let it get would be a Bleutooth dongle.

As a recovering Audiophile, I'm gonna stay away from r/audiophile lest they temp me to sell my kidney to afford that extra 5% in "acoustic fidelity." Seriously, I'm happy with the 95%.

Now, how do I go about putting together that sound system? Or in Audiophile terms, what is the DT 770 Pro of home stereo setups?

AriaMinaei··on Ask HN: How to quickly animate system sketches and 2D diagrams?
Right. Thanks for the correction.

Theatre.js can definitely drive this type of animation. It’s an animation library that you can hook up to your diagramming library. And it gives you a visual interface for keyframing and tweeting, etc.

Theatre.js | Fullstack Engineer | Senior | Remote | https://join.theatrejs.com

At Theatre.js [0] we are enabling artists and engineers to create intricate interactive experiences. We are also empowering people to craft their own creative environments. Our mission is to blur the line between designer and developer, author and consumer, artist and scientist.

Our mission is inspired by the work of Ivan Sutherland, Seymour Papert, Bret Victor, and others.

We recently announced $4.5M in seed funding [1] and have two spots left on the core team.

Your main job as a full-stack engineer is to implement the multiplayer collaboration infrastructure. Think real-time editing like Google Docs, and branching/merging like Git (without conflicts), and component-level versioning like SelfLang. This is a big challenge in terms of performance and ergonomics, and we're pretty sure it hasn't been tried before.

If you're up for the challenge, write us a cover letter at join@theatrejs.com. We know a good engineer when we see one, so there won't be a lot of interviews to go through.

Buzzwords:, CRDTs, FRP, Incremental Computation

Theatre.js is an open-source motion graphics editor for the web. It is our first step towards building a collaborative medium for dynamic systems (microsites, apps, generative art, explorable explanations). We aim to blur the line between designer/developer, author/consumer, and artist/scientist.

Our inspiration comes from the work of Ivan Sutherland, Seymour Papert, Bret Victor, and others.

We launched in September [0], and have just started hiring the core team [1] with four positions open. Join us as Founding Engineers (senior-level or higher), Founding HCI Researcher, or Founding Designer (owning design from branding to UX). Your agency and comp will match your Founding X title.

AriaMinaei··on Thank you, GitHub
Iranian dev here. I can tell you if a company goes the extra mile to provide services to us, the reason is almost always that they just care. It's not a marketing tactic. You have to care if you go through all that trouble. And there is very little publicity to these acts. No one is going to notice it but us. They only do it out of the goodness of their hearts.
AriaMinaei··on It is easier to educate a Do-er than to motivate the educated
Alternative take is that education has been anti-maker/anti-doer and it has been so for a long time.

The constructionist movement is trying to change that. To make making be the education.

Great to find this on the front page!

I call Theatre.js a hackable animation tool. It helps you to:

- craft detailed motion for JS values,

- route those values to actual visual objects, like DOM nodes, THREE.js objects, or your homemade libraries, (someone even did a lightshow with Arduino and Theatre.js)

- and build visual tools for your own tech stack.

I've posted more screenshots here: https://twitter.com/ariaminaei/status/1439918117807853575

Happy to answer any questions!

AriaMinaei··on Theatre.js: Animation motion design editor / library for high-fidelity graphics
(Author here) Agree with you as I have to deal with limited data every now and then.

I was weighing whether to go with videos or GIFs a few days ago. Sadly, video in markdown is not supported everywhere (eg. in npmjs.com) so some users wouldn't see them. And the readme wouldn't make much sense without the videos as this project is about motion design, so not much to explain in text.

So I opted for GIFs and spent a couple of hours cutting/speeding up videos to get the file sizes down.

The docs OTOH, contain no GIFs :) https://docs.theatrejs.com/getting-started/

AriaMinaei··on Windows 96
My most painful data loss was when I tried a Windows "alternative" called "Lindows" [0]. Touted as "Linux, but easy like Windows!."

So I put the disk in, and it says something like "Do you want to install Lindows?" with no options, no warnings or anything. So I hit Yes/Okay/whatever the single button on the screen was, and without zero warning, it proceeded to wipe my entire hard drive.

It's been 17 years and it still hurts :)

> So based on this definitive evidence I'm gonna conclude everything we eat is good for you

More conclusive evidence that everything we eat is good for you [1], I recently discovered skyr, a traditional Icelandic dairy product [2] with an unusually high protein/calories ratio.

It looks and tastes very much like the homemade yogurt of my grandma, "māst kise-i." And the preparation procedure of skyr and māst kise-i are almost the same.

Anyway, skyr is good for you. It replaces the protein shake, plus it has the other nutrients of a good dairy product, goes with all kinds of foods, and costs no more than yogurt.

> The myth of "unwilling collaborators," and "forced to work for Germans under a gunpoint" was invented after the war by political forces who got in bed with 3rd reich, and then wanted to save their skin from pitchforks when they lost.

Not to mention Ordinary Men [0], the dynamic that makes your average citizens with no ideological indoctrination become the murderers of tens of thousands of Jews, to the point they'd shoot at small children with a clear conscience. They'd even have the option not to directly take part in the murders, but still do.

Again, these were average, ordinary people. No strong party affiliation, SS membership or anything.

The fact that Christopher Browning's book was a revelation when it came out shows how little we've learned from WWII. We might have put the lid on undisguised antisemitism, but we have merely channeled its otherising roots elsewhere. Otherwise, we wouldn't find it so easy to turn a blind eye to the settler colonialism happening right now in Palestine.

AriaMinaei··on Parcel 2 Beta 3 – improved build performance
For a beginner, I wouldn't recommend vite just yet. There are still rough edges (like browser load time being unbearably slow): https://github.com/vitejs/vite/issues/3208

If you're starting out, I'd suggest spending more of your time in a higher level of the stack (like writing application code, learning React/etc), rather than spending time deeper down in the plumbing, especially if you're using cutting-edge pieces in the build pipeline.

AriaMinaei··on Folio: A customizable test framework to build your own test frameworks
On a tangent, are there any test frameworks focused on runtime performance? With esbuild speeding up everything else, jest has become the main bottleneck in my dev workflow.

>> Social signals that cost significant resources for something worthless are stupid.

> No, you just don't understand social signals, which was my point.

I don't think OP denies the utility of signaling, only that as an intelligent human being, one must not feel absolutely helpless in accepting and perpetuating all instances of signaling that their peers do.

There are many different cultures with strong means of signaling one's devotion to a partner, without having to essentially burn a small fortune to enrich an exploitative industry. It doesn't even have to be non-materialistic. Many cultures have the gold ring/necklace. It's a signal of a fortune spent, and a retained safety net because gold is tradable.

> but, in what sense are they not independent?

Netflix is available in 190 countries [0]. That's an advantage over a traditional distributor. But it ties their hands on what kind of content they can make. A large enough country will certainly hold sway over what's allowed to be on Netflix, even if they only air it elsewhere.

Apple TV+ is an even bigger problem because of Apple's dependence on China. Doesn't matter if Apple TV+ is even available there. It simply cannot produce content that China finds objectionable. China has chastised companies for much less [1] [2].

Thank you for writing this. FWIW, what you describe as “not design” has a parallel in programming; as in, most of what we do is not engineering.

Anyway, I’m working on a “design” tool. I’m reachable via my handle at gmail. Reach out if you’re interested. Would be nice to bounce ideas.

AriaMinaei··on The M1 MacBook Air: Perfection
Some people associate repairability with bulk and thermal issues. This is almost never the case.

There is ultimately some tradeoff between repairability and size/weight/thermals due to physics. But companies compromise on repairability way below an actual physical limit.

Examples:

- To replace the batteries of a MBP Retina, you must disassemble the entire motherboard before freeing up the batteries [0]. A lot of people end up damaging the board in the process.

- The Surface Laptop isn't even meant to be opened. If you open it, you can't put it back together [1]. I wonder what "physical tradeoff" Microsoft made here that even Apple didn't have to make in an iPhone?

- All MBPs after MBP Retina have the NVMe drive soldered on [2]. The drive is paired with the secure enclave, but clearly they could've offered a mechanism/service to pair a new drive rather than force the user buy a whole new laptop.

Could it be that the extreme forms of taarof you’re seeing happens in some sort of social bubble? I grew up in Iran, I’ve seen and lived with taarof, and I’ve never experienced kind of insincerity you’re describing. Taarof has always been a short back and forth to be gotten over with. The invitations and other acts of generosity on the other hand, have always been sincere.
AriaMinaei··on Apple Announces App Store Small Business Program
> Why not get another device?

This advice would work for clothes/home appliances/furniture and other competitive markets, but not to mobile OSes.

Mobile OSes are natural monopoly/duopolies. There isn't enough room in the world for 100 OSes for us to get a competitive market. There isn't even room for 3. There is barely room for 2 with great downside. Companies spend a lot of money developing an app for one OS and basically re-creating it for the other.

I'm looking at my phone's home screen. Most of these apps are available in the other OS too, with almost the exact same functionality, but completely different codebases. Each of these duplicate efforts represent anything from X×100K $ to X×10M $ of development cost. This is just part of the cost of having more OSes. And the consumer ultimately pays for these costs.

AriaMinaei··on Apple Announces App Store Small Business Program
Classic antitrust maneuver; divide and conquer, this time from Apple. Antitrust activists shouldn't let this dull their pencil.

The main issue is not the exorbitant commission rate. Apple is hurting the consumers via its anti-competitive behavior with regards to what apps people are and are not allowed to install on a device that they've paid for. They are blocking value creation up and down the stack in a manner that "if we can't extract it, you're not allowed to create it."

AriaMinaei··on What happened to Firefox Send?
Check your extensions and privacy settings. Firefox is more aggressive in blocking trackers and that does break some authentication flows that involve trackers. You can always disable some of those protections to get the website to work, though I haven't had to do that in ages.

Other than that, Firefox on the Mac is consistently easier on the fans than Chrome, and unlike Chrome, I almost never get runaway processes.

Web pages are also as snappy as Chrome. If a page feels slow, I often open it in Chrome to compare, just out of curiosity. It used to be that Chrome would struggle less with these pages, but FF seems to have caught up in the past year or so.
