Seems about right

Areading314··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
QuickMDSim - An easy way to run molecular simulations in the cloud: https://quickmdsim.com

This simplifies the setup for researchers who want to simulate materials science problems like battery electrode performance on GPUs with a simple usage-based pricing model instead of traditional HPC

Areading314··on Engineers will do anything to avoid learning from history
The central point, that working with agents is some tried and true variation of existing processes, is incorrect.

Managing agents has some similarities with EM and program management but a whole lot of other dimensions like token use, avoiding drift, successful concurrency at scale, variations in prompting, testing, evaluation, etc., not to mention that the agents are hyperintelligent coders with zero common sense and a penchant for extremely literal interpretation and ultra-verbosity.

I think explicit management of the event loop and the associated potential for grievous bugs has a lot to do with it.
Areading314··on Thunderstorms Have Caused $45B in Damages in the U.S. in Six Months
Construction costs have been outpacing headline inflation by a huge amount. This has accrued to costs of repairs easily exceeding 20-30% over a few years ago.
Areading314··on Static Chess
I applaud the aim to make lean and fast websites, but the lack of timer and drag+drop on this game makes it unusable, so I think this actually makes the reverse point -- one should not put non-functional requirements ahead of the function of a product. In other words, this was not a good compromise.

Areading314··on Parsing URLs in Python
Ah, that makes more sense -- it might be a good idea to integrate with the upstream library as a submodule rather than lifting the actual .cpp/.h files into the bindings repo. That way people know the upstream C++ code is from a much more active project.

Despite my snarky comments, thank you for contributing to the python ecosystem, this does seem like a cool project for high performance URL parsing!

Areading314··on Parsing URLs in Python
This is the commit history: https://github.com/TkTech/can_ada/commits/main/

I guess you are right that there are 2 commits from a different dev, so it is technically not a solo project. I still wouldn't ever use this in production code.

Areading314··on Parsing URLs in Python
It seems unlikely that this C++ library written by a solo dev is somehow more secure than the Python standard library would be for such a security-sensitive task.
Areading314··on Parsing URLs in Python
Hard to imagine the tradeoff of using a third party binary library developed this year vs just using urllib.parse being worth it. Is this solving a real problem?

Areading314··on The Ute Tribe will construct one of the largest solar farms in the US
This doesnt take into account capacity factors. A "800MW" solar plant would be expected to actually product 10-25% of that after day/night and seasons are taken into account. Nuclear plants are more of a 90+% capacity factor.

Areading314··on My sixth year as a bootstrapped founder
Agreed. I read your original post during a time where I was starting up a solo company and it's great to see you've eventually seen success after all these years! The points you make about which problems seem interesting as an engineer and which ones lead to actual success resonate a lot. Congrats on TinyPilot!
Areading314··on Plastics producers deceived public about recycling, report reveals
This is specifically about plastic recycling. Metal, glass, organic waste recycling are very much economical and good for the environment.
Areading314··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
Solar isn't a useful source of energy for heating in California, since the demand is almost entirely during winter mornings/evenings where the sun is down.
Areading314··on Making steel without emitting CO2
Experimental methods and data analysis are usually scrutinized in peer review, whereas wild, unsubstantiated economic claims such as the above are not. I think we need a higher bar for making claims like the above.

Sticking points for me were, massive chlorine gas production (extremely toxic...) and requiring extremely high purity iron ore, with costs to purify it hand waved away.

Areading314··on Plastic bag bans work
Plastic is about the best carbon sink you could imagine, locks up those Cs for hundreds of years, unless it gets combusted.

Areading314··on What if your entire worldview was just because of near-zero interest rates?
Very accurate. The dysfunction of congress led to a much slower economic recovery after the GFC due to sequestration and partisan debt ceiling games. Then went far the other way with huge tax cuts, huge spending, followed by even more spending by the current admin, and claim surprise at the resulting inflation. If we do have a recession coming, we are in a very bad position to cushion it at the moment due to political partisanship.
