Arcanum-XIII··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
In reply to .3: bancontact is nearly free per operation, but credit card were percentage heavy fee per transaction... That's why. And don't forget that the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg will prefer debit over credit for payment.

Don't forget that the banking world is still under a lot of pressure from the various government (systemic risk assessment for example) and the stakeholders. It's a mess!

Arcanum-XIII··on The creative software industry has declared war on Adobe
I've tried the alternative for Photoshop and came out unimpressed. It's even worse for Illustrator, and I hate this software. They're not perfect. I don't like the pricing either or their attitude. Still, After Effect, Illustrator, Indesign are very good. I'm not ripped off with the suite at the end...

I have the same issue with Maxon and Zbrush: nothing is close, but it's still the best at what it does.

We have an even worse company around: Autodesk. And they have competition in the CAD, 3D creation world (that they tried to destroy, but Blender changed the game and Houdini is another world)... but not so much around Revit. Architect would destroy them if they could. But no alternative works.

So let's not insult user here: people tries the alternative. They're not good enough. They're worse.

Arcanum-XIII··on Hold on to Your Hardware
Simulation, analysis, rendering... All those gobbles memory, CPU, sometimes graphic card. Real time works also: huge data set in real time — sensor for production line or environmental monitoring for example.

For word processing, basic image manipulation, electron app (well...) even the "cheap" Macbook Neo is good enough, and it's a last year phone CPU. But that's not enough for a lot of use case.

Arcanum-XIII··on Apple discontinues the Mac Pro
Sound card works fine on USB2 (RME for example has cards on USB2 that can manage 30/30 io at 192khz without issue at low latency if you have the CPU to deal with the load)

With USB3 you have 94 i/o…

For years pci has not been mandatory for audio. UAD, Apogee, RME and other high end brands will push you to them. Or even only provide them as usb device… even Thunderbolt is not needed here.

And that’s been the case for a while! My Fireface UC from 15 years ago can deal with 16 channels at 96khz at 256 sample. On PC and Mac.

Arcanum-XIII··on Exploring the ocean with Raspberry Pi–powered marine robots
Sadly no — you have toys (none open source and reliability is... well, let's say that the repair are regular and out of support) or you can try to create yourself a waterproof solution (that's complex). Most connector cost a lot, 3D printing is not really an option (especially at depth), pressure is not joke to deal with... And then you'll have to fight with the environment (algae, plants), water salinity, acidity and so on. Other system at the same level costs more — I think the next one is at 25k without option. Don't forget that if for any reason you need to reach it at depth, you'll have to dive. Please don't do that alone...

It's a high cost hobby :(

Arcanum-XIII··on Exploring the ocean with Raspberry Pi–powered marine robots
Blue Robotics (bluerobotics.com) is also using Pi, for their BlueRov and survey boat (BlueBoat) - they’re quite nice to use (and not toys… you can add sonar, dvl, usbl locator to go at depth - max 600m with the kit)

I’m also starting to build other water/ground vehicles for underground exploration - communication and localisation are challenging, without speaking about navigation on uncertain terrain. Pi are accessible and cheap, and the Pico’s are also very useful to interface with the motors, sensor and so on.

Arcanum-XIII··on Making niche solutions is the point
CAD is complicated, yes. But the biggest pain point is that engineering requires a lot of adjacent knowledge about material, tolerance, mechanical design, tooling, and so on. Making things requires patience.

CAD is the easy part.

Arcanum-XIII··on Schizophrenia sufferer mistakes smart fridge ad for psychotic episode
Try to buy a new TV without « smart » features. It’s nearly impossible and all of them will come with some kind of ads on it. I fear it will become impossible to buy a fridge without screen and ad if we don’t find a way to stop this. It’s pure profit for manufacturers and the consumers are fucked since fridge are basic necessities.
Arcanum-XIII··on Ruby and Its Neighbors: Smalltalk
I used a "modern" app written in Cincom Smalltalk this year (still maintain and sold a high price), and you don't see the underlying system. Like you don't see the source code when opening any other app, in fact. The app resets the state at startup, so no lingering eternal session.

It's funny because in the past I got the chance to test izware Mirai, which is written in Lisp — when the app got into a problematic state (which was often on my machine) you were sent to the REPL where you could inspect the memory and so on. It was alien to me at the time. Today I dream of having that.

Arcanum-XIII··on Notes on Managing ADHD
Your comment show a lack of understanding of the condition. With ADHD, we suffer from difficulties with executive functions, like adhering to a planning, being able to chose to work on something... I have obsession: I can't decide on what. I can work at length on complex subjects, again, probably not the one you expect.

It's not a choice.

Medication is not a silver bullet, but it allows, as explained in the parent article to do those things.

Arcanum-XIII··on ADHD drug treatment and risk of negative events and outcomes
I’ve seen friends with stimulant and can say with full confidence they are not reacting to them the way I am. They’re « high », ideas everywhere and nowhere, acting like their overstimulated, full of energy… when I’m quieter, energy level normal, can think at one thing at a time without switching… and sleeping under the effect is not an issue. I a have great nap.

So no. Maybe if I try a récréative drug will I have my adhd multiplied, but here it’s not. I think it should have been fun while younger discovering that amphetamine could quiet me when everyone was dancing under the influence.

It’s not perfect. No medication are. If you abuse it, take it without need… yeah it can be abused. Don’t try heart medication either. Or lithium for kicks. Or…

Arcanum-XIII··on Graphics livecoding in Common Lisp
Well, for me it’s not enough because I need to get back to where I was, repeating the same actions so it gets to the same state. With live dev I don’t need this, or a history replay method. I only update the running code. Heck I could also update the in memory var too if so I want.

It’s good that it’s fast. Still no good enough!

Arcanum-XIII··on It's time to make computing personal again
Well, I have access in Files to a lot of content from my apps - that’s a decision of the app creator to not use this and keep the content created in the locked area of the app.

For example, the apps from Omni do this, as do obsidian, Linea…

Let’s assign the blame where it should be here.

Arcanum-XIII··on Learning Synths
Music is about nuance, finesse, expressivity.

You don't have that with a computer keyboard. Music is hard, don't set yourself for failure so early, for no good reason.

Arcanum-XIII··on Pigment Mixing into Digital Painting
Rebelle is very good. It’s fast, work fine at high resolution and so on. Less feature rich than painter (but that’s a good thing)

What’s still missing : the proper feel for dry materials (like charcoal) and a deep integration with the surface of the support. Right now it’s more or less a light depth map - nothing as gritty as wood, harsh paper (or even cloud ones)

My favorite at the moment.

And yeah, color mixing has been very good for a while there.

Arcanum-XIII··on PCIe trouble with 4TB Crucial T500 NVMe SSD for >1 power cycle on MSI PRO X670-P
Not all DMM have probe small enough to connect to the lane. If it's even possible. What's more, you need to know where to put it, which can be daunting without the proper knowledge. Switching hardware is easier, faster and often the best solution in those case.

Finding hardware fault is hard. Tracing it is even harder.

Arcanum-XIII··on "BGP at home": getting a DIA circuit installed at home
It's still a very high motivator to keep the service up though. It's not a guarantee of anything as you said but I've been on call for this kind of contract. And then you get very good at pointing fingers too. Not too sure about this though :D
Arcanum-XIII··on You must read at least one book to ride
Honestly, being a freelance consultant is also the only way to have a high wage… that fact alone explains a lot.
Arcanum-XIII··on Show HN: Bluetooth USB Peripheral Relay – Bridge Bluetooth Devices to USB
My CTO is quite adamant that he hates shadow IT. Especially those with mac, full of... well software used by those artsy employees. Or with strange software not validated by the IT.

Well.

Other departments ask for equipment, but only hear no back. Management product like Monday? No. Dedicated solution for jobs they don't understand? Hell no!

It's tough to be part of this. I know security is hard. Budget limit stuff. But we can, and should do better.

Arcanum-XIII··on Making Electronic Calipers
Which is quite low. My manual caliper is precise to the 1/10 of a mm, my electronic to 1/100 (but I would say 0,02 is the more realistic) The manual one is not good, harbor freight quality, electronic is a mituyo (not an entry level). Still - good ROI on both, got the electronic one because my eyesight is not that good anymore.

"Amazon does the customer service"

Sure this isn't Hell ? Because customer service at Amazon is a best non existant, at worse actively against you...

Arcanum-XIII··on Who Pays for the Arts?
Except that it nearly work only for people acting, dancing and working in « live » art.

If you’re a painter or a sculptor, since you can’t provide proof of engagement length, you were out. That’s getting better but still not a UBI by any means. They’re poor.

Do we have good contemporary art ? Yes. They’re not subsidized by the government, have to pay heavy taxes as we are and got to have lot of red tape for their enjoyment. So they move out of Belgium. With a raised middle finger…

Meanwhile this same system is abused by Uber and other major.

Arcanum-XIII··on Sitina1 Open-Source Camera
Everything you say is pretty much on target, except the UI. I know my Sony camera, and every time I need to do a change in a setting, it's plainly horrible. Confusing naming, no feedback, sometimes you're thrown back to the main UI without explanation... and the bugs. For the longuest time the auto off was not working properly, which, on an hybrid camera leads to a very short battery life.

From what I've seen, it's not better on Canon and Nikon hardware.

They spent a lot of time refining the manual control, so it's very good and intuitive but then fails so bad at the electronic UI...

Arcanum-XIII··on Insights after 11 years with Datomic [video]
Pricing killed it for my experimental project.

Of course the complexity of having to set a cluster early on doesn’t help for small shops.

Then there’s the complexity of learning datalog - love it, but when I see people already struggling with SQL, I’m not confidant about using it generally !

All is well, then, one day, you have to update one library.

Some days later, in some woods or cave, people will hear your screams of rage and despair.

Arcanum-XIII··on Windows 11 is now enabling OneDrive folder backup without asking permission
I don't need to that on macos. Or Linux. Or whatever the fuck I want to use.

I don't need to disconnect from my network either. It just "work".

Arcanum-XIII··on Bayer is getting rid of bosses and asking staff to ‘self-organize’
In an interview process they tried to sell this to me. So I asked the question of what would happen in case of disagrement. It would be solved magically by consensus... I told them no. No structure or too much structure leads to the same result: chaos. A different one, but well, not good in either case.
Arcanum-XIII··on Multipath TCP for Linux (2022)
It’s quite easy to use in other app - it’s there in the basics. We were quite amazed to find our voip app to be quite robust in 2011 :D
