AnsisMalins··on The Website Obesity Crisis (2015)
The difference vs the rest of the web is so stark, I don't read the sites linked by HN posts anymore. I just read the HN comments.

It's not just size, but also JS execution time, reinvention, poorly, in JS, of features the browser has natively, and endless modals.

AnsisMalins··on GDPR: Removing Monal from the EU
Guessing: even if you don't have assets in EU, you have a Google (or Facebook, or Amazon) account, and Google has assets in EU. EU could ask Google to ban you, or else.
AnsisMalins··on An Alphabet X concept from 2016 is an unsettling vision of social engineering
Good to know I'm not the only one to think of this: a phone app that asks what you want and then orders you around. And when you tick the online box, it optimizes over the population of all online users. For example, it might suggest places and times as to increase chances of serendipitous encounters.
AnsisMalins··on Salon magazine mines crypto-cash with readers' PCs
Now the incentive is to keep the user on the site longer. Excessively long articles?
AnsisMalins··on Why I don't use my real photo when messaging with customers on my website
But then why would you harass a bot?
AnsisMalins··on Why I don't use my real photo when messaging with customers on my website
I don't understand. Why would you ask a random website chat on a date? The chances that you're anywhere near her are nil. Do you intend to fly out to meet her? What is happening in your head, random visitor?
AnsisMalins··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
I find it exciting how well on track we are for the cyberpunk dystopia.
AnsisMalins··on Ask HN: How do you test-drive a new programming language? What do you build?
For me, it's the other way around. I find a piece of technology that I want to use, and then, sometimes, it comes with a new programming language I have to learn. For example, I didn't install Python and then wonder what to do with it. I was using Mercurial, had a need for a custom plugin, so I learned Python so I could write the plugin.
