Anonyneko··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
We tech guys keep thinking of tech solutions, but as someone who reluctantly has to cross a border of an even more hostile country every now and then, you have to remember that border agents are not stupid and will mark you as suspicious if your open profile does not look real enough or there are traces of encryption on the device (when they connect the phone to forensic tools, they can easily see if something looks off). Being paranoid about security is a huge red flag.

The only thing you can do is travel with a clean device on which you maintain a completely innocuous social presence, such as chats with parents and non-foreign friends, and some social media with normie activity. Even that would not be enough if you're an activist or otherwise personally targeted, as your real accounts are already known in that case and your only option is not to travel at all, but it reduces your chances of getting in trouble (or arrested, depending on the target country). Though it still won't help in the long run as security services collect and organize more and more data about everyone.

I don't think "use distribution_name" can be a universal advice, the reality of Linux is that you need to research which particular distribution supports your particular hardware well enough. Or try several distributions until you find one that has the least issues.

That, or make hardware compromises and buy a laptop that provides official Linux support, which is likely to have a more Mac/Windows-like experience of things "just working".

Anonyneko··on I said no and Apple said yes
These are web apps, they are unlikely to use anything other than what the browser/OS provide them. This is most likely due to lousy audio drivers, an issue plaguing desktop Linux since its very inception.
Anonyneko··on I said no and Apple said yes
Removing ads from Windows is still much easier than making sure Linux works on a machine that is not Linux-certified (which, for me, is usually the case, as I have particular hardware preferences), and getting software I need to work. I've used Linux for work for a long time, but I'm still sticking to Windows at home. All else being equal I would greatly prefer Linux, but with the current gap (for my purposes) convenience still trumps ideology.
Anonyneko··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
I use the default one from my carrier, but I've previously tried Google and other DNS servers to no avail. For some reason the site doesn't even open for me through a VPN.
Anonyneko··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Ah, so that's why it never works for me.
Anonyneko··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Maybe it's just me, but even on pure aesthetic reasons I would take a Comic Sans and clipart poster made in Word over the slop.

At this point I have some kind of a physical repulsion to the generated posters, and it's always easy to tell from the fontwork and the iconography, let alone illustrations if there are any.

Anonyneko··on This Code Is CRAP (2011)
>Note: This post is rated PG-13 for use of a mild expletive. If you are likely to be offended by the repeated use a word commonly heard in elementary school playgrounds, please don’t read any further.

Mild as this ironic passive aggressiveness is, can't imagine something like this in modern sterile corporate messaging.

Anonyneko··on An update on Wayback Machine access
Which sucks because these just don't work for me for some reason (Finland, no luck with VPNs either).
Anonyneko··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Inertia, friend groups, and also a lot of countries other than the US that have no idea about US politics or don't care enough about it.
Anonyneko··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
I think the concern is that humans who are given back their time won't have any means to make use of that time, or even possibly means to survive. The resources will be concentrated in the hands of the few more than ever.
Anonyneko··on LG TVs aren't the only ones spying on you [video]
Kinda hard to do when nobody offers dumb TVs with good screens anymore. With printers you have options at least.

Use cases naturally differ, but I'd much rather use more storage than hit yet another unresolvable dependency issue.
Anonyneko··on Nebula Sans
I absolutely love the idea behind Nebula, but to this day there isn't a single creator there that I'm interested in actively following...

A big part of it is just my hobbies being different, but a no small part is that the videos are still the same YouTube videos that are first and foremost built to satisfy the algorithm. And since these are all people who are successful on YouTube, the concentration of such videos is higher than on actual YouTube.

>you almost always only get good-quality journalism if you pay for it

Often true, but sadly doesn't work in reverse - if you pay for it, it often still isn't good-quality journalism (although your mind will tell you it is, just because you paid for it).

Anonyneko··on Xorg-server 26.1.0 rc1
Not in the short-term, for sure, and probably not even in the mid-term. But hardware keeps changing, and at some point nobody will care enough (or be able) to implement proper support for it in X (or proper support of X in that hardware). Hopefully we still have at least a decade of X though.
Anonyneko··on Xorg-server 26.1.0 rc1
The community doesn't really have a say because Xorg is effectively on life support and the Xorg devs are now working on Wayland. There aren't many people in this world who could keep Xorg going. Some distros are sticking to Xorg, but it will become more and more difficult in the coming years.
Anonyneko··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
So it can be disabled on 27B after all? I haven't downloaded 3.8 27B yet, but the announcement made it seem like only the hosted Max can disable thinking, and with the open weights you could only select between provided reasoning efforts.
Anonyneko··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Is there any way to turn off thinking if I'm using Ollama? In my particular case, the Ollama API (the software I want no-think for is tied to Ollama's bespoke API). If not, I'll stick to 3.6 for the time being...
Anonyneko··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
I think it's either. With Nordea, it's seemingly based on whether you are already using the mobile ID app or not.

They also have a different "Talk Device" that is specifically meant for people with disabilities and such, which is supposedly free to get once (80€ for replacements), but the page doesn't specify who can order it.

Anonyneko··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
I'm lucky in that I learned to ignore it over time, so I'm not too bothered by it when I go to sleep. But when I'm particularly mentally exhausted it's much louder than even my retro fridge. Got a noise combo too, as my eyesight is also full of TV static.
Anonyneko··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Still a thing with some of the Finnish banks, as I've recently learned. In my bank it costs ~20€ - unless you can't physically use a smartphone, in which case it's free. But you kinda have to know that it exists.
Anonyneko··on Qwen3.8-Max: A New Bar for Coding and Cowork
Full model or a 4-bit quant? I have a 5090 and I'm not sure whether I should use a quant that fits within the VRAM or a much bigger version where I'd have to offload a lot to 64GB RAM and a beefy CPU (but still a CPU)
Anonyneko··on KOReader
It's a great reader app, but as a reader of Japanese light novels it's sadly not fit for my personal purposes - last I checked vertical text is only possible in a really, _really_ hacky way (using a font that is turned sideways), and dictionary support for Japanese (or, say, Finnish with its complex lemmatization) is lacking behind browser extensions such as Yomitan, or mobile apps like Hoshi Reader that have Yomitan dictionary support.

I don't think KOReader handles fixed-size epubs terribly well too, and most of my manga (usually bought on Rakuten Kobo) comes in that format.

For reading English or native language books on non-Android e-readers it's a godsend.

Anonyneko··on OverpAId – Fire your CEO. Hire the future
In the post-Soviet world it's a fairly normal practice to have a "CEO on paper" who's only there to go to jail if things go wrong, and have a completely different person or people make all of the business decisions and handle deals and big customers. E.g. in one of my former workplaces this formal "CEO" was the bookkeeping guy who handled our salary payments and whatnot.

This practice is old enough that it was parodied in "The Golden Calf" in 1931...

Anonyneko··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
Not enough, e.g. when crossing the Russian border (even as a citizen) your phone can be connected via USB to a device that uses exploits and whatnot to download all of the data. Surely US border guard can do something similar.

And using encryption will only make you more suspicious, and may be a reason to get jail time until the situation is "cleared up" one way or another (e.g. by getting even more jail time).

Only a second phone works, if you can make it seem like a device you're actually using (though also not a silver bullet as e.g. a lot of messenger metadata is available to governments and border control can physically coerce you to log in to your real accounts)
