AndrewSwift··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
One thing the US could do to make traffic lights a lot safer is copy eg France and only show the lights on the near side of the intersection.

In France, if you move up too far, you can no longer see what color the light is — consequently everyone waits back where they should.

In the US, you can edge out into the traffic and still see your light.

AndrewSwift··on Ternus to potentially squeeze more out of App Store
"Ternus and services chief Eddy Cue want to make even more money from the App Store and figure out ways to raise margins and squeeze additional recurring revenue from the platform."

AndrewSwift··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Today I plan to ask Claude to read a bunch of Feynman lectures, compare them to my last Claude session transcript, and come with a list of rules to be more like Feynman.

It'll go in CLAUDE.md

AndrewSwift··on “I just chose words carefully”
Presumably this is a very similar technique to watermarking AI-generated text.
AndrewSwift··on OpenAI model autonomously hacks HuggingFace
In a blog post, OpenAI said it was testing the capabilities of some of its most advanced models in a controlled environment but that the program managed to escape containment, reach the internet, and break into Hugging Face to try to satisfy its testing goal.

Hugging Face said in a blog post last week that it had been the target of a hack that was different from anything they had handled befor in that it was driven, end to end, by an autonomous AI agent system.

AndrewSwift··on Alan Greenspan has died
This should be the top comment, at least for today.
AndrewSwift··on The end of public frontier models
We see with the Mythos block that AI has begun to seem dangerous to the powers that be.

We can expect 1-3 more public frontier models before they are globally barred from public access as being too dangerous.

AndrewSwift··on Using Claude Code: The unreasonable effectiveness of HTML
Which Quick Look extension? I've been looking for a good one.
AndrewSwift··on Chest Fridge (2009)
Drawers would solve this in a vertical fridge.
AndrewSwift··on A NASA Engineer Discovered a World of Semi Truck Aerodynamics by Accident
All trucks have standard shipping container trailers. Europe has strict length limits for the overall cab/trailer that preclude a hood in front of the cab. There is great resistance to changing the law, even though long-nosed trucks are vastly more aerodynamic, because the law provides protection for european truck makers from American competition.
AndrewSwift··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
FWIW: option double click sny corner to make any window full-screen without going into full screen mode.

Double click any side or corner to move it to the edge of the screen, and hold down option to make the effect symmetric.

AndrewSwift··on Are the Three Musketeers allergic to muskets? (2014)
My guess is that the use of mousquetaires was more a reference to a specific corps of the military than to the weapon itself.

It would be like the gendarmes today — literally "armed people", even if they don't always carry an arm.

AndrewSwift··on EU Council Approves New "Chat Control" Mandate Pushing Mass Surveillance
It would be nice to have details:

It rewards or penalizes online services depending on whether they agree to carry out “voluntary” scanning, effectively making intrusive monitoring a business expectation rather than a legal requirement.

AndrewSwift··on Whatever Happened to String Theory?
This is a great article — just short texts by experts in their field who really know what they're talking about. It's very refreshing compared to all the rewritten and simplified articles one so often sees.
AndrewSwift··on Nicu's test website made with SVG (2007)
See svija.com/en — all SVG websites ;-)
AndrewSwift··on Nicu's test website made with SVG (2007)
Yes! We do that with svija.com/en — an all SVG website with an HYML wrapper so it displays at the correct size.
AndrewSwift··on Nicu's test website made with SVG (2007)
We have been building all-SVG websites for six years – https:/svija.com/en

They do get indexed by Google, and we take some extra steps to ensure usability.

AndrewSwift··on iPhone Air
It's wild to see the HN crowd, bleeding-edge technologists, regularly bring up "lying flat on a table" as a critical feature for a supercomputer inside a camera that fits in your pocket.

Somebody (many somebodies?) is rolling over in his grave.

AndrewSwift··on Welcome to url.town, population 465
Cool, but I'd like us to get past the idea that a site has to use Times font to be retro.

Times is really not adapted for the web and is particularly bad on low-resolution screens. How many computer terminals used Times for anything but Word processing?

Verdana was released in 1996 — is that too recent?

AndrewSwift··on Protecting my attention at the dopamine carnival
I have always assumed that this was done to drive app usage. Companies hope that if you use an app regularly you'll keep it on the home screen of your phone, and it becomes a foothold into your most intimate device.
AndrewSwift··on No One Can Explain Why Planes Stay in the Air (2020)
You can see why planes stay in the air by sticking your hand out a car window.

If you know better contradict me, but:

An inclined flat surface will push air down, creating pressure below, and create an empty area above, creating a partial vacuum pulling up.

Airfoils are used instead of flat surfaces because they eliminate turbulence by creating laminar airflow.

Regular planes are not built for flying upside down and have airfoils optimized for regular flight — the airfoil section we're all familiar with.

At an airshow once, a pilot showed me that on a plane built for acrobatics, the wing section is vertically symmetrical.

AndrewSwift··on Not a three-year-old chimney sweep (2022)
Great article, thanks for sharing.
AndrewSwift··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
It was deaths/km ridden.
AndrewSwift··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
I wondered once if it would be possible to ride a motorcycle safely if I drove carefully (everyone I know who rides has been in at least one serious accident).

I thought: I could look at the data, but I see so many motorcyclists driving dangerously that the data wouldn't teach me much.

So then I thought: I bet if I look at the accident rate for women riders it would be interesting.

I found that in the UK, male riders have seven times the accident rate of female riders.

So I guess how you ride does make a huge difference.

AndrewSwift··on Nice Things with SVG
I love what you have done here — it's very graceful.

I was feeling great but now I think "I have a lot to learn — I'd better get going!"

If you are interested in SVG animation, I wrote a program to do it from within Adobe Illustrator — see examples and how it works at https://svija.com/en/animation
