AndrewHampton··on Leap: A new gesture based interface for devices
The first thing I thought after watching the video was how much money will they make with pre-orders on this site and how much would they have made with a kickstarter campaign?
AndrewHampton··on A High Frequency Trader's Apologia, Part 1
I agree. I think there is currently a balance to be struck between accuracy of the price determined by the algorithm and the speed at which it obtains that price. I think removing the subpenny rule would just reduce the importance of speed and increase the importance of accuracy. I'd imagine trades would still happen extremely fast though.
AndrewHampton··on A new way to access quality content online
It's been too long since I've taken statistics to be sure, but I wonder if you could account for this by randomly placing the options in the top position then comparing the results of when A is on top versus when B is on top?
AndrewHampton··on How One Response to a Reddit Query Became a Big Budget Flick
A little pedantic, but Reddit isn't technically a division of Condé Nast anymore. It's now owed by Advance Publications, which also owns Condé Nast, so they're sister companies. More details here:

AndrewHampton··on Step by Step UI Design
Kandan looks interesting. Just curious, why have a private beta for an open source app?
AndrewHampton··on Code-free Website Tour Builder
I know stack overflow gets around this by creating an account for every visitor and keeping track of which account you are by using a cookie. If you later decided to sign up, your credentials replace the cookie for figuring out who you are.
AndrewHampton··on Darpa seeks to free the world from passwords
I agree. Maybe this would be harder than I'd expect, but it seems that if an attacker knows what criteria are used for identification, they could simulate a a given user's typing patterns. And to collect data on how you type, they could collect it when you're typing into your text editor, IDE, website forms, or anywhere else.

It seems there would also be a problem when the same person is signing in on a computer with a keyboard vs on their phone/tablet.

AndrewHampton··on Superior jQuery plugin template
The first line of $.fn.wTooltip is

  if(typeof option === 'object')
Does anyone know where option is declared and where its value is set?
AndrewHampton··on From Miserable Launch to Decent Success in 3 Months, Thanks to Hacker News
Looks like you forgot the t in without for "Participate withou the app?"
AndrewHampton··on StackOverflow
I think the investment was a bet that the Stack Overflow model could be replicated in many verticals. If they're able to achieve being the de facto QA site for other professions like they are for programming, I think there are several revenue models that would be possible.
AndrewHampton··on StackOverflow
Although one key difference is that EE kept the IP for all the user generated content, but all SO content is licensed under Creative Commons.

AndrewHampton··on We're turning off Clickpass March 15. How to keep your HN account.
It's working now, so I guess it was the capitalization, thanks.
AndrewHampton··on We're turning off Clickpass March 15. How to keep your HN account.
I just followed the steps, but I'm getting a "Bad login." message when I try to sign in using Chrome's incognito mode. How long before the new username/password combo works?
AndrewHampton··on Poll: Do you have a Facebook account?
I've considered deleting my facebook account, but ultimately decided to keep it because nearly all of my extended family is on facebook only. I did delete nearly all the personally information associated with my account and decline all requests from others saying I went to XYZ school or am related to them in some way.
AndrewHampton··on How Khan Academy is using machine learning to assess student mastery
I was thinking the exact same thing. It was really neat to read about a real world use of what I'm learning in the class.

It makes me wonder if the data set is available as well.

AndrewHampton··on White House responds to Patent Petition
From what I've read in the petition responses, it seems to me the whole system is designed to spread information about what Obama has already done or positions he's already taken to a targeted group of people.
AndrewHampton··on Sublime Text 2 (Build 2111) gets vi key bindings, indent guides
If you're on Windows, I recommend you try Notepad++ which has this feature along with a host of others. I find it to be pretty similar to ST as far as features go.
AndrewHampton··on NYU Prof Vows Never to Probe Cheating Again—and Faces a Backlash
It seems to me the best solution would be to have a few student workers at the university that are the plagiarism "police". They would review the TurnItIn reports for all student papers and refer offenders to honor boards for punishment.

This would leave the professor free to teach and not have to a) spend time policing the student and b) be seen as the bad guy when students get caught and punished.

AndrewHampton··on WebPutty: CSS editing goes "boink"
OK, thanks
AndrewHampton··on WebPutty: CSS editing goes "boink"
I'm curious if you used this already since you've been working w/ Fog Creek or if this is the first you're seeing it too.
AndrewHampton··on Harvard-Smithsonian Confirms Black Hole Existence after 40 Years
From the article:

  "Black holes, if you recall, are created when stars run out of fuel and die. In dying, they collapse into a much smaller mass with such enormous gravity that it sucks in just about anything that comes light years near it."
I may be wrong, but doesn't the mass of the black hole roughly equal the mass of the star? I know some is lost during the explosion, but I thought the mass stayed roughly the same and just the volume significantly decreased.
AndrewHampton··on Why is there only one human species?
It makes me wonder if our relatively little diversity is related to the uncanny valley and our ancestors eliminated any variation that wasn't enough like themselves.
AndrewHampton··on How fast is the Internet at Google? Mind blowing.
It's likely the average of people in the US who have run the speed test.
AndrewHampton··on Using Client-Side Javascript for Distributed Computing
This vaguely reminds me of John Resig's TestSwarm project (http://ejohn.org/blog/test-swarm-alpha-open/). Although I'm not sure what the current status of the project is since the links to the site and github project are now dead:

http://testswarm.com/

https://github.com/jeresig/testswarm

This seems like it would be an ideal starting point for a project like this.

AndrewHampton··on YouTube is going Live
I'm in Virginia, and this happened all the time to me while I was on Comcast, but since switching to another ISP, I never encountered this problem.
AndrewHampton··on Functional Thinking after OO
pg quote from the article: you don’t just write your program down toward the language, you also build the language up toward your program. As you’re writing a program you may think "I wish Lisp had such-and-such an operator." So you go and write it. Afterward you realize that using the new operator would simplify the design of another part of the program, and so on.

I remember thinking when I first read through pg's essays a few years back and again now that you can do this in declarative languages as well using functions.

For example, my programs often looks something like this:

  main(){
    var data = getData();
    pushData(data);
  }

  function getData(){
    var data = fetchDataFromSource();
    var errors = validateData(data);
    if(errors != null)
      //handle errors
    return processData(data);
  }

  function fetchDataFromSource(){
    ...
  }

  function validateData(var data){
    ...
  }

  ...
Could anyone explain why functional languages are better for this? It seems to me this is the same as "building the language up to your program".
AndrewHampton··on StackOverflow’s Careers 2.0
This seems like a great fit for the stack exchange sites in general. They're building communities of experts in various fields and now you can hire someone who proven to be an expert in that field by going to careers.[stack exchange site].com.
AndrewHampton··on ShowHN: an easy way to track your packages
FWIW, I use http://twitter.com/TrackThis. You just have to follow them (they don't post anything, so no stream spam) and send them a dm w/ the tracking number. They send you a dm whenever there is an update to your package location while it's traveling.
AndrewHampton··on Google algorithm change launched
I'm seeing two SO URLs (5 and 6) before efreedom (8th) when I click that link.
AndrewHampton··on Cash Cow Disease: The Cognitive Decline of Microsoft and Google
From the original article:

Meanwhile, at Google, the cash cow is search-driven advertising. That allows the company to encourage engineers to waste 20% of their time on "projects"

If I remember correctly, didn't Paul Buchheit create Gmail and AdSense on his 20% time?
