AnOscelot··on Lyft donates $1M to the ACLU, condemns Trump’s immigration actions
There's evidence Bannon has been the chief author behind some of the recent executive orders. Especially the immigration order. Trump is arrogant but he's very easily influenced. And I'm not convinced he even understands what he is signing.

His antisemitism has been well documented. How he gets along with Kushner and Ivanka, I have no idea. I suspect they don't get along at all. There will plenty of books on Trump's Team of Rivals, though probably much less glowing than for Lincoln's similar team.

One reference for Bannon's antisemitism: http://www.timesofisrael.com/stephen-bannon-5-things-jews-ne...

Speaking of which: I also wouldn't be surprised if Bannon is behind Trump's recent Holocaust statement in which Jews aren't mentioned at all.

I completely understand that. But it's a term he used for himself, and I think it's funny to semi-accurately (not in terms of actual definition but in terms of someone's self-description) label a member of a Republican administration as a Leninist.

Though Bannon may be more accurate than he realizes about being a "Leninist" since he wants his faction to be the vanguard party with power derived from the white working class and voters who identify with such.

neo-nazi Leninist

The former term is how his detractors, including me, would describe him. The latter is a term he famously used for himself.

AnOscelot··on My Next Mac Mini
I'd love to see that too. Sales seems to be high for the MBP so maybe there's more quiet supporters than loud detractors. However the very existence of loud detractors about a product line, which historically has had far more fervent defenders than critics, indicates the hardcore users are unhappy overall.

Apple, more than any other tech company, usually attracts the "can do no wrong" type of fans. They're still around for this product lineup but much quieter than usual. That should be worrying for Apple, assuming they still care about Macs.

AnOscelot··on Google Has Started Penalizing Mobile Websites with Intrusive Pop-Up Ads
I can understand why the desktop gets a pass, but I really, really wish they would consider doing it for sites which pop up those damned "Give us your email!!" forms. Especially those sites which pop it up almost immediately when I've arrived at their site for the first time. I don't even know your site yet. Just followed this link from somewhere else. And you're immediately demanding my email for your pointless newsletter?

Maybe it's just me, but I think I hate those things more than anything else on the current web. Maybe even more than autoplay videos.

AnOscelot··on How a TV Sitcom Triggered the Downfall of Western Civilization (2016)
This reminds me of my childhood church, in the late 70's & early 80's. The pastor was absolutely obsessed with Three's Company. Felt like not only was it the worst show on television, but that it was a harbinger of the end times. That women in short shorts in a comedy of manners was going to destroy America as we know it. Mom at first forbade it in our home, and then she caught an episode by accident. Turned out to be one of her favorite shows and a regular in our house.
AnOscelot··on What was it like working on the original iPhone project?
The only story I've heard about Apple lunches was the one where a guy (overweight by his own description) bought a big muffin on campus. Jobs was in the vicinity. Saw the guy. Didn't say anything but gave a stare of death at both the guy and the muffin. Next day, there were no muffins to be found at Apple.

Sorry I can't find the original link for the story.

> But there's also evidence he won't follow through on some of it.

I hope you're right, but I really don't understand this view. You look at the terrible leaders throughout history, and you'll find they more often than not advertised what they were going to do and who they were going to be.

I'd much rather be prepared than just assume Trump is a troll. I'd rather see an implacable opposition ready to go on day 1. If Trump ends up being a simply bad president, in the conventional way presidents are bad and not a Russian puppet or kleptocrat or autocrat, then people like me might look a little silly. But that's a small price for being prepared if things turn out very differently.

AnOscelot··on A Message to 2600 Readers and Writers
It's not batshit crazy. It's the responsible response.

Trump's said plenty of disturbing things. Both in his political run and in his 30+ years in the public eye. He's erratic, petty, prone to seeking revenge, and extremely thin-skinned. Americans should have never given this guy power, but they did.

The most responsible thing 2600 et al could do is warn people and be prepared for the worst. If the worst happens, people need to be prepared already and not taking panicked steps at the last minute. History is full of examples of people thinking the incoming leader didn't mean all the awful things he said. It's best to believe what the leader has said and take appropriate action.

There's a chance of looking crazy if Trump ends up not being as bad as his words indicate, but that's a chance worth taking considering the harsh and very possible alternatives.

AnOscelot··on DoomRL Open Source Release
Can Bethesda issue a revocable license to DoomRL for the use of "Doom" and still have their trademark protected? Since it doesn't seem like Bethesda cares whether or not DoomRL exists, and since it would provide good will and good PR towards Doom, this seems like a better move than sending a C&D, which just causes hostility.
AnOscelot··on YC’s 2016 Holiday Gift Guide
>"hey, have some money...but you can only spend it at this one place of my choosing, not yours".

In some circumstances, that's actually an advantage, and works as a positive for the recipient.

When I was in college, money was tight. Had to be very careful with every dollar. When relatives would give me money for holidays, it would just go into the general fund and had to be treated with the same care as the rest of it. That money was certainly appreciated and made my life easier, but not a lot of fun was had with it.

But when I'd get gift cards to Amazon or Best Buy or Borders, suddenly it was a license to go crazy. To recklessly buy electronics, books, and luxuries I couldn't otherwise justify. It wasn't just a gift of money. It was a gift of money without worries attached.

AnOscelot··on Breitbart news site blocked by ad exchange
Reddit has infamously tried to be a free speech platform. They've allowed misogynists, nazis, rabid Trump devotees, and fat-haters a place to spew. The result of that spewing has been an enormous amount of trolling and harassment which ends up silencing people and making Reddit less diverse.

At some point you have to choose whose free speech you value more. Reddit has made some small attempts to stop the harassment, which in turn has made Reddit somewhat more diverse. Because misogyny has become a little less prevalent, I'm seeing more women on the site.

Free speech, as far as internet forums go, is not a black and white issue.

AnOscelot··on Breitbart news site blocked by ad exchange
So this ad company is not allowed to criticize Breitbart and should be forced to do business with them? And this would somehow be "freedom" and not totalitarianism?
AnOscelot··on NSA Said to Use Manhattan Tower as Listening Post
Dislike Obama all you want, but he's let the states experiment with legalization. He's freed some people sentenced to harsh terms for non-violent drug offenses. I expect a huge wave of pardons and commutations of other non-violent offenders as his term ends.

As for Trump, he's put a nazi (or alt-right if you prefer) in the White House. He's nominated another racist for AG: Sessions who was considered too racist to be a judge, in a confirmation hearing in 1986. The judiciary committee was led by none other than Strom Thurmond. Thurmond and company thought he was too racist. Thurmond! Let that sink in.

Speaking of foreign donations, the President-Elect has 'invited' foreign dignitaries to stay at the Trump Hotel (the Old Post Office) in DC. Which they are doing so in an effort to gain favor with the new administration. Profits from their stays, of course, goes straight to Trump. Unfortunately for him, this will be quite illegal, and un-Constitutional according to the emoluments clause, as soon as he takes office. This clause will also apply to his foreign holdings, many of which remain in the dark because Trump has decided to be as non-transparent as possible.

AnOscelot··on I’m a Coastal Elite from the Midwest: The Real Bubble Is Rural America
That's been such a winning plan for middle America, hasn't it? They rise up, only to vote for the politician, usually Republican, who panders to them most. That same politician who will then proceed to do absolutely nothing to help them, and often vote for policies that hurt them.

So we can either ignore middle America and let them continue this self-destructive cycle, or can point it out. Which will then make them mad and they'll continue voting in the useless pricks who do nothing to help them.

I know you tried to make your statement sound like a threat. But I live in the rural Midwest. I've seen the politicians voted in at the local level. Politicians like Brownback who have trashed the state. It's cutting your nose off to spite your face, as Mom used to say.

AnOscelot··on Epic Games chief pays $15M to protect 7,000 acres of North Carolina wilderness
One organization I support is the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance[1]. For those of you that care about the redrock desert, please look into them. They were very effective in the Bush years and I'm hoping they will be again.

AnOscelot··on Donald Trump Is Elected President
Doesn't matter if you're personally racist or not. You voted for a racist who has used racism as a substantial part of his campaign. You've done your part to give a racist power.
AnOscelot··on Video Games Are Boring
I wonder how many of us went the opposite direction. Loved games when I was a teen. Then college took up so much time that games fell to the wayside. And then almost the entirety of my 20s and much of my 30s was spent either working on projects I was passionate about, or with my friends and band, or on various adventures. Games took a far back seat to all of that. Something to do on one of those rare nights when nothing was planned.

And now, with the demands of family and sick loved ones, and with the added money which can build the sort of system I could have only dreamed about in my poor teens and college years, I'm home much more and games are suddenly appealing again.

People really should learn to not reuse usernames. Unique password per site, and unique name as well. This won't protect anyone from government agents, but it will make it harder for an Internet mob to determine your identity.
