AliCollins··on GB Renewables Map
Great visualisation...but doesn't seem to have any display of the amount of Solar (though won't be much on such a cloudy day!)

AliCollins··on Writing Is Magic
This is where a short abstract or executive summary upfront can make all the difference. If the main points are summarized, they will (hopefully) be read; the rest of the document, no matter the format, can then be read for context or with references from summary.
AliCollins··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
Having read this today, went home and watched https://skidrowmarathon.com/ tonight. Each of these are a way of showing the power of giving people dignity.
AliCollins··on SpaceX: Eutelsat/ABS Mission Hosted Webcast
O well - better luck next time. Hopefully they got some more good data...would rather they have this issue now than when landing Red Dragon on Mars..!!
AliCollins··on SpaceX: Eutelsat/ABS Mission Hosted Webcast
No telemetry from the landing stage? Or views from the nearby boats (how close is the nearest boat anyway?)
AliCollins··on SpaceX: Eutelsat/ABS Mission Hosted Webcast
Did the "experimental landing" work this time?
AliCollins··on Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger
Thank you!
AliCollins··on APOD: LIGO detects gravity waves...
...and now there is an interesting image showing the signals from the twin LIGO detectors - fantastic!!
AliCollins··on Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger
Thanks...but it was the rest of the paper itself I was wanting to look at! Trying to download the pdf...along with a fair few other from the slowness of the site.
AliCollins··on Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger
Is this paper mirrored anywhere else yet? The Phys. Rev. Letters site appears to be a bit overloaded!
AliCollins··on APOD: LIGO detects gravity waves...
Currently a "Placeholder APOD" until the LIGO Press Conference at 11AM (ET)...we're waiting!!
AliCollins··on SpaceX seeks to accelerate Falcon 9 production and launch rates this year
There has certainly been information out there about SpaceX's Raptor rocket engine...but I am unaware of how far they are along the development process: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raptor_(rocket_engine)
AliCollins··on Google now selling ethernet adapter for Chromecast
So good it is currently sold out (and not available in my region...yet!)
AliCollins··on SpaceX – Video of Pad Abort Test
I assume that all went as planned?!
AliCollins··on How Google Sold Its Engineers on Management
Has anyone "written the book" on this yet? It seems like a good article that with more explanation would be a great guide to management for those of us who never get to work at Google (or similar).
AliCollins··on GXUI: A New Cross-Platform UI Library by Google
"GXUI is a new cross-platform user interface library developed at Google for their Go programming language.

GXUI is currently in an experimental state for delivering cross-platform GUIs written in Go. The code is owned by Google but is not currently an official product and was started as an experiment while the community contributing to it requires compliance with Google's Individual Contributor License Agreement (CLA), that may put off some in the open-source community.

The initial code drop of GXUI happened a few weeks back while new code continues being pushed almost daily. Those interested in learning more about the new Google GXUI Go interface library can visit the GitHub page (https://github.com/google/gxui)."

AliCollins··on Go Challenge 1
Thanks - I had missed it back then, and HN didn't send me to that link when I added it.
AliCollins··on A Comprehensive Guide to Building a Scalable Web App on AWS
Does anyone know of a similar article for the Google Cloud infrastructure?
AliCollins··on SpaceX CRS-5 Webcast
Here we go again...!!
AliCollins··on SpaceX CRS-5 Webcast
Also, if SpaceX rockets move to carrying people, having that perfect record is even more important.
AliCollins··on SpaceX CRS-5 Webcast
Where did you get this information from?
AliCollins··on SpaceX CRS-5 Webcast
Will be waiting..!!
AliCollins··on SpaceX CRS-5 Webcast
Fantastic! Give the man a fag packet to write on the back of and we'll see what he comes up with next!!
AliCollins··on SpaceX CRS-5 Webcast
Yes!
AliCollins··on SpaceX CRS-5 Webcast
Last I heard they gave a 50/50 chance of landing the first stage...so quick poll: do you think they'll do it?!

Musk from the AMA: There is a great quote by Churchill: "If you're going through hell, keep going."
AliCollins··on Rosetta: Comet probe Philae now stable
I assume this means that as well as the harpoons, the ice screws in Philae's feet didn't work because the thruster wasn't functional.
AliCollins··on Mod – A paper notebook that syncs to the cloud
...and the idea is that your notes are then available and searchable through app on website, phone or tablet. So if like me you have lots of notebooks but they tend to occasionally be "tied away", collating all that in one place could really salve that pain point.
