AlexFromBelgium··on Dear Microsoft: fsf.org is not a "gambling site"
Humor isn't HN's strong spot :S
AlexFromBelgium··on Dear Microsoft: fsf.org is not a "gambling site"
"This reminds me of another situation several years ago, when BadVista campaign pages were conspicuously absent from Microsoft's live.com search results,..."

If you have poo, fling it now!

AlexFromBelgium··on Outsourcing Birthdays and Flirting
".. if nationalism and religion were taken off the table, we'd revert to tribalism within that framework."

It's all tribalism really. Just on a larger scale. We never evolved beyond any of it.

I think dr42 was talking about moving to a radically different perception of the world. Not just bigger or smaller..

AlexFromBelgium··on RIP, Nokia (1865 - 2014)
And bought by Samsung.. That would rock. Make ALL the Android phones!
AlexFromBelgium··on Russia, China, Tajikistan propose UN "code of conduct" for the 'Net
Did they submit this together with the RFC I saw yesterday..?

They aren't even trying to be subtle.

AlexFromBelgium··on JavaScript game of Tron in 219 bytes
I read 'j' 'k' 'l' and thought "Sweet! Vim controls"

Not... :(

AlexFromBelgium··on Must-read programming books?
I get my recommendations from stackoverflow mostly, so I know the books I read are good. My brain knows the information is legit and takes it all in.

On the internet I spend too long reading short pieces, reviews, articles... A book is nice and LONG :)

AlexFromBelgium··on Vim: Buffers, Windows, and Tabs
To bad switchbuf doesn't actually work with :b.

Only buffer related split commands like :sbuffer, :sbnext

AlexFromBelgium··on Turn.js 4th Release is out and amazing
Took ages before I figured out how to flip pages O.o
AlexFromBelgium··on Study of 49 programmers: static type system had no effect on development time
In my own experience: if I write dynamic code I'm still thinking of types. Especially in Python.. What's mutable, what isn't... This is what my professors at school say too. Less typing (pressing keys) doesn't make you think faster!
AlexFromBelgium··on Ruby is faster than Python, PHP, and Perl
Doesn't matter... Dynamic languages are slow by design!

Caching and JIT compilers to the rescue!

AlexFromBelgium··on The Microsoft Update mechanism has been used to spread malware
Oh yeah, sure, blame it on the Belgians!
AlexFromBelgium··on A Boggling Return to C
I've already read K&R! Don't worry. I know it's the must-read book on C.
AlexFromBelgium··on The rise and fall of Sony
Not a single successful game console will be launched in the next 5 years. I'm sure of it.
AlexFromBelgium··on A Boggling Return to C
I'm a student who learns C#, Java, Php, javascript... at school. I bought "C: A Refence Manual" to learn this summer...

Hope it will make me a better programmer.

AlexFromBelgium··on What Startups Can Learn From Sun Tzu’s The Art Of War
The Facebook, Twitter, Google.. buttons hover over the text. Not everyone is surfing the web on a 32' monitor in full screen you know!
AlexFromBelgium··on LibreOffice 3.5.4 released with up to 100% performance improvements
One by Microsoft for everyone, including themselves. Not respecting standards is just retarded on too many levels.

EDIT: Unless, of course, they have a private internal standard...

AlexFromBelgium··on LibreOffice 3.5.4 released with up to 100% performance improvements
I would argue that's a Microsoft problem... I don't think office files are even compatible with their own standard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_Open_XML .
AlexFromBelgium··on The Real War 1939-1945, by Paul Fussell (1989)
I wonder if it was harder on the American or the European soldiers. Going home to a land where nobody knows what you've been through.. My grandfather fought in WW2 and he talked about it all the time. But I feel like he got over it, psychologically. Everyone here did it together.. I think.
AlexFromBelgium··on Eve Online spaceship viewer uses WebGL
Works perfectly on a macbook (Chrome 19). I've not gotten WebGL to work on Linux with nouveau drivers though..
AlexFromBelgium··on If Money Doesn't Make You Happy, Consider Time
Faster, better, more happiness! Must optimize time/happiness ratio. Less wasting time. Time lost in the past must be justified. Time in the future must be planned for. Optimal usage is the goal !! (Have you tried sitting on the grass lately? Maybe take a nap in the sun..)
AlexFromBelgium··on No-cost desktop software development is dead on Windows 8
I get everything for free.. Server software, IDE, ... and I feel dirtier, and dirtier every time!
AlexFromBelgium··on The security hole in sudo
Douglas Crockford said in one of his talk on Javascript (www.yuiblog.com/crockford/) that the syntax came from Fortran. And indeed it's because assembly did the fall through thing...
AlexFromBelgium··on Facebook Is Worth More Than ... - Interactive Feature
... and then the animations begin O.o
AlexFromBelgium··on WYSIHTML5: A better approach to rich text editing
Now make a WYSILatex editor in html5 :)
AlexFromBelgium··on Microsoft wins US import ban on Motorola’s Android devices
... patent on “generating meeting requests” facepalm
AlexFromBelgium··on Why Linux Sucks | LFNW 2012
Why Linux Does Not Suck: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfLqLK7VdQY&feature=relmf...
AlexFromBelgium··on Linux Mint 13 "Maya" RC released
But it's a Gnome 3 FORK.. They won't be able to keep up with mainstream gnome. They even forked Mutter, the window manager! They should build on top of Gnome 3, not freakin fork it
AlexFromBelgium··on Ask HN: Countries with sane governments that won't mess with my Internet use?
Not Belgium...
AlexFromBelgium··on The Grammar of Vim
Just to be clear: I was the person saying things could be better... But I also wanted to point out Vim CAN do most of it. I agree with you on many points...

Maybe I could try writing some plugins in the future :)
