Abroszka··on Dutch rules will soon prevent schoolchildren from having a phone in classroom
I think you are confusing "respond off-hours emails" and on-call. I work in Germany and I'm contractually obligated to respond when I'm on-call.
Abroszka··on Dutch rules will soon prevent schoolchildren from having a phone in classroom
No, in the EU too and it's legal. They pay extra though <3
Abroszka··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
> start your own gas company with competitive margins

Are you serious? Why would existing large companies allow this? And even if you succeed they are just going to buy up the company.

Beautiful example of this is large IT companies buying startups and stopping competition.

Abroszka··on My total comp for creating GitHub Copilot
I would assume so. It's Microsoft after all. All big companies have some kind of "bonus" in your salary especially in America. I think 20k is too low to be that. I get more than that and I work in the EU.
Abroszka··on My total comp for creating GitHub Copilot
Why? I think this is something extra on top of their usual bonus plan.
Abroszka··on My total comp for creating GitHub Copilot
20k sounds good. Also a good reminder to just work in an idgaf mode. Their success is not your success. Work the least you can to avoid being fired, and try to improve yourself whether it aligns with the company goals or not.
Abroszka··on Apple Vision Pro – Potential hardware issues
I like the external battery. It's easy to replace and I don't have to strap a large and heavy battery to my head.
Abroszka··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
Because the code it generates is working? The recipes it gave to me are also delicious and I don't even have to read someone's life story on a blog before getting to the recipe.

Not really sure why you are so fixated on the echo chamber thing. We are on the internet! The biggest echo chamber humanity has ever built.

Abroszka··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
It rarely hallucinates for me. But you need to know what it's capable of and how to use it to work effectively with it. You can't use it well if you think it's an all knowing sentient AI.
Abroszka··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
Yeah, I agree. Google did a lot of work to make ChatGPT useful. It's clearly worse than it used to be.

I usually need someone to explain something to me. And I used Google before to land on a site where I could find the explanation (e.g. how to use a library). ChatGPT can explain most things I need and I can skip Google and the other sites. But it's indeed not a search engine, if you need factual information then your best bet is to find the documentations, articles, databases, etc.

Abroszka··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
I use it almost every day for work. It has mostly replaced Google for me. A lot more convenient. Now whenever I use Google it's more or less just to look up the address of a specific site.
Abroszka··on Study: ChatGPT outperforms physicians in quality, empathetic answers to patients
It seems it gives more accurate and emphatic response. I would guess the physician just needs to double check that what the LLM says is medically correct, reasonable and ask the right questions from the patient and the LLM.
Abroszka··on SpaceX's First Starship Launch Tomorrow
> Is SpaceX succeeding because of Musk or despite of Musk?

Probably because. Just look at Blue Origin with Jeff Bezos. Or look at the US, EU, Chinese space industry. It does look like Musk adds something to SpaceX that makes them achieve above the rest.

Abroszka··on SpaceX's First Starship Launch Tomorrow
SN15 flew almost two years ago.
Abroszka··on Terence Tao on GPT-4
Even in some of the FAANG that's not the case. Not sure about all of them though.
Abroszka··on Mass layoffs and absentee bosses create a morale crisis at Meta
All of this is basically:

* shitty people scamming other people: Yes, everyone knows. It happens with normal money as well. I regularly get "How to avoid scammers" emails from my bank too. As long as something has value someone will try to use it to scam someone else.

* mining: Yes we know, mining is bad. Nobody wants it, it's going away. Could it go away faster? Yes, but it will happen eventually. Ban mining for all I care, nobody really needs it.

Abroszka··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
This is going to be hard. Amazon doesn't offer much at the office other than milk, tea, coffee and bananas. They will need to be less frugal to convince me to come to the office.
Abroszka··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
So much this. I might even panic a bit if I got promoted. Nowadays I got so used to the work and tools that I can finish work in less 8 hours on most days. It pays well, I'm having enough free time, low stress because it's the same work I have been doing for a number of years already. Not much politics at my level. I just enjoy it.
Abroszka··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Wow, if that means that the engineer is personally responsible that Twitter follows the FTC rules, then RIP the engineers. I would just stop writing code at that point. No compensation worth that risk.

And it opens up interesting questions. If I decline to implement something then can the company fire me at all? Or do they have to prove first that what has been asked does not goes against FTC rules.

Abroszka··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
Exact replicas are an issue. If you are using AI image generation to replicate the near exact image, then that's illegal. But nobody cares if you copy a nice code pattern from a GPL code and apply it to your own code base. In the same fashion nobody should care if you make an image in the same art style.
Abroszka··on SpaceX said to fire employees involved in letter rebuking Elon Musk
Of course they were fired. It's a dictatorship, you do what they tell you and work. There is no point getting this involved with the company, it never pays off. Work as little as possible to maximise your gains, and invest in other aspects of your life.
Abroszka··on My students cheated... a lot
If I understand correctly, they had an online async test and they shared screenshots of the answers. Is that even cheating? It wouldn't even register as cheating for me... When I was at the university (not US) we had these online "tests" too, but it was a different category than the real tests. Nobody really cared what you do. Sometimes we sat down together and did it one by one (especially if it was some random generated math problem), other times we just shared the answers (when the test was too lame...)
Abroszka··on European Commission prefers breaking privacy to protecting kids
EU has nothing to do with it. Just look at UK, outside the EU still doing the same thing. It's a global trend. It's more or less irrelevant what kind of country you live in, people are pushing to end E2E encryption.
Abroszka··on Android loses 8% of its global OS market share in five years
I still miss Firefox OS. What happened to it? To me it seems that it was going well, but it was impossible to buy a phone with Firefox OS.
Abroszka··on Apple’s risky, yearslong effort to design its own silicon is paying off
I think that's a fair price. But it was overpriced before the M1 CPUs. You could just buy a non-Apple for way cheaper that was noisy, weak and overheated just like the MacBook Air.
Abroszka··on Apple’s risky, yearslong effort to design its own silicon is paying off
> Of course, if you're a fan of macOS, there's already no reason for you to consider a PC, but if you really do like Linux, then I'm not sure what it is about the current state of AMD/Intel processing hardware that you dislike so much.

On PC, Intel and AMD is great, the desktop M1 is not that great vs. those CPUs. The problem is the laptop form factor. All Intel and AMD laptops I owned so far were noisy, overheated, had worse trackpad, and didn't last long on battery. Those are not a problem with PCs.

Abroszka··on Apple’s risky, yearslong effort to design its own silicon is paying off
No wonder, I don't particularly like Apple, most of their stuff is way too overpriced imo, but the new M1 MacBooks are pretty great. Every single laptop I had before the M1, whether it's Apple, Dell or whatever is simply crap compared to it.

I'm not really sure what AMD or Intel were doing in these past 10 or so years, but they need to change ASAP. The M1 Mac is great, but a similar linux laptop would be incredible.

Abroszka··on Pair Programming Antipatterns
I'm not sure about pair programming. I never really understood why we stop at two people. Why not have 3 or 5 people working together? And indeed that's what we do when for example doing system design and it's incredibly useful.

Writing mundane code in pairs sounds like a brute force solution that should be solved by training, higher quality code scanners or other code quality tools.

Abroszka··on Swiss back further restrictions on tobacco advertising
> products containing addictive chemicals that correlate with public health costs

Depending on what you mean by addiction that would include a lot of normal food as well. High sugar, sugar + fat, MSG, etc.

Abroszka··on Reduced-hours software development engineer position at Amazon
> Yes I know there's a sign on bonus. No I don't care.

But why? The sign on bonus makes it almost 40%/40%/40%/40%.
