Abroszka··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
There is always somebody ready to respond. Of course they can't take full control, that would be stupid dangerous, but they can still control the car. They even have people who go to your car to get it unstuck manually when needed.
Abroszka··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
There is someone to take over as soon as the car encounters something it cannot handle. It's not self driving. By definition it's not driverless, there is always a driver assigned who will take care of it if needed. One of the reason they cannot scale beyond small areas.
Abroszka··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
Search for "driver monitoring system". As soon as there is something unexpected there is an actual driver taking care of it. Also the reason why it's not level 5, but stuck at level 4 self driving.
Abroszka··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
> driverless taxis went from "it'll never happen" to "is this the default now?"

That's still far away, these are not driverless cars, there is always a driver monitoring, but they monitor not one but many cars, ready to take over.

Abroszka··on Researchers invent 100% biodegradable 'barley plastic'
I think it's working as intended. It incentivises buying a good quality plastics or cloth bag and reuse.
Abroszka··on Intel to Receive $8.5B in Grants to Build Chip Plants
> Do you think that if Ukraine was not being courted by US that it would've been invaded like that ?

Invaded? Probably not. Becoming a second Belarus? Yes. Overall it would have meant a Russia - NATO border closer to me. I prefer an Ukrainian - Russian NATO border far, far more.

Abroszka··on Intel to Receive $8.5B in Grants to Build Chip Plants
> US led NATO expansion lead to the war in Ukraine, and Europeans are paying the price.

As an Eastern European, I cannot thank the US enough for pushing NATO. It makes me feel safe. I'm just sad that they could not get Ukraine into NATO before all this madness started.

Abroszka··on Redis adopts dual source-available licensing
> As far as I understand it they want to preserve "open sourceness" for self hosted projects - ie. if you run redis in your docker/vm/k8s, you're fine. But if mega corp clouds are offering managed service, they need to give back a cut from premium they're charging end users.

I like it and I think this is how open source should work to thrive.

Abroszka··on 6.2 GHz Intel Core I9-14900KS Review
Do they? Even I have problem nowadays with this, because they write 60W but it's a LED and it acts like a 60W bulb but it's not 60W. 60W is more like branding.
Abroszka··on "Coding" was never the source of value
I don't see why that would contradict my statement. Yes learning is good, but it becomes harder as we age.
Abroszka··on "Coding" was never the source of value
It's basically true for every profession. We even have a word for it, we call it wise. They built up an experience that they rely on during decision making and produce good results. Changing that is hard.
Abroszka··on "Coding" was never the source of value
They are older and learn slower, they also learned a lot of biases over the years. They are often unwilling to accept major changes to workflow.
Abroszka··on German Bundestag Passes Cannabis Legalization
That's understandable. There is still a social stigma attached to it. Hopefully it will change over time.
Abroszka··on German Bundestag Passes Cannabis Legalization
Pretty sure tomatoes attract more pests. Also people grow these in the forest on small sunny patches and they do just fine. It's literally a "weed", it grows like crazy. But yes, it won't be premium quality, just some average weed.
Abroszka··on German Bundestag Passes Cannabis Legalization
> I would be extremely hesitant to grow cannabis on our balcony.

Why is that? Just buy a small body, auto flowering seed, some fresh soil and water it every couple days and wait. You won't have a gigantic harvest but that's basically all you have to do and you will have more weed than you know what to do with. When grown, cut it, hang it upside down and wait until it's dry.

Abroszka··on German Bundestag Passes Cannabis Legalization
Right, it does have a strong odor. But if you have a balcony then it's easy even in an apartment. Without a balcony it is a kinda difficult as you need some carbon filtering set up.
Abroszka··on German Bundestag Passes Cannabis Legalization
The main benefit comes from knowing what you have if you grow it vs. buying something that looks like weed from the guy on the street.

Also growing it is super easy. If you can grow tomatoes then you are already overqualified.

Abroszka··on Signs that it's time to leave a company
It wouldn't work where I'm working because we have less seats assigned to us in the building than there are people in the team...
Abroszka··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
No, but it makes less sense to haul around an ICE or more battery than needed for 100 miles.
Abroszka··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
Still doesn't explain how the EV is less reliable. OK, it's more expensive due to the battery, but surely no ICE at all should make it more reliable.
Abroszka··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
Not sure. In the comment I replied to, they mentioned that EV is good 95% of the time. In that case, renting a car, like once a month, for a long range tip would make sense imo. Better yet, public transport, then rent an EV there.
Abroszka··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
For each of those 51 hybrids you need to manufacture an extra ICE engine. Which is not cheap. It's more complex to make a drive train that can seamlessly handle switching from EV to ICE. So it's more difficult to manufacture. Has there been a study that takes the whole lifecycle of a hybrid into account vs an EV or ICE?

Would be super interested if there had been a research that also takes into account that we don't need SUVs that seems to be the go to car in the US.

Abroszka··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
But then just rent an ICE car when you go for a long drive... better for the environment.
Abroszka··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
Seems fishy to me. How can a more complex device (ICE + EV) be more reliable than a pure ICE or EV? Also seems like a crap website, their chart show 79% more problems as red and then 26% fever as green.
Abroszka··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
Hybrids doesn't make sense to me. If you need a car that runs on gas then make it a proper ICE car. Why put two engines into one? Seems super wasteful.
Abroszka··on [dead]
> Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce, are lobbying President Joe Biden's administration to increase the number of temporary foreign workers allowed in the United States through the H-1B visa program

Why are they even allowed to hire H1B employees from abroad after the layoffs?

Abroszka··on Amazon Andy Jassy shouldn’t make RTO decisions in echo chamber of CEOs feelings
I don't think that makes sense. You can just go back and not work. Learn a new skill or something while in the office. You basically fire people who physically can't come back or people who are not afraid of losing their job. You probably don't want to fire based on that.
Abroszka··on Amazon Andy Jassy shouldn’t make RTO decisions in echo chamber of CEOs feelings
Amazon monitors your work laptop day and night... They know if you work or not.
Abroszka··on Amazon tracks and targets US staff over 3 days in office rule
No, it's not fine. It adds a lot of complications and EU countries are different. It's not an accident that this is US only. The main problem is that while it's fine to collect that data, but to use it to calculate attendance is an another question.
Abroszka··on Was Starship’s Stage Zero a Bad Pad?
They said that they expected some damage based on the previous tests. They just didn't expect the whole thing to be blown away.
