ASinclair··on Gemini 3.8 Flash
From personal experience it feels much more capable than 3.7 Flash.
ASinclair··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
I saw him talk at SF Nerd Nite years ago. Very entertaining and informative. The crazy thing is he's self taught. Smart man.
ASinclair··on New York becomes the first state to impose a data center moratorium
Why would people move to jurisdictions that are building AI datacenters? It seems like people would move away from them.
ASinclair··on Google copybara: moving code between repositories
It’s largely used for syncing external open source projects with the monorepo. Policy is to require source code imports over built artifacts. Though you can get exceptions.

Some projects are also developed in the monorepo and exported via Copybara.

My team also uses it to version Starlark rule sets internally.

ASinclair··on Supreme Court upholds broad conception of birthright citizenship
> one of the few in the world that allows this

Over 30 countries have unconditional birthright citizenship.

ASinclair··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
It just came out the Kalshi outright gave Donald Trump Jr a $300k stake in the company when it made him a “strategic advisor”. That’s the name of the game now
ASinclair··on Iran Shock Jolts Asia and Europe to Speed Up Energy Transition
It's not all sunshine and rainbows. Countries are turning to coal as well. There aren't natural chokepoints for coal distribution like the Straight of Hormuz.
ASinclair··on Training our own AI models
Mostly unrelated but the name of this company makes me think it's a Dick-Pics-as-a-Service provider.
ASinclair··on A History of IDEs at Google
I would recommend learning the various "bazel query" variants starting with a plain "bazel query" https://bazel.build/query/language

> For anything with native UIs, I suppose you could "remote desktop" into an app or a simulator running in the cloud

This does exist. The network isn't the main problem. The Emulator has to run under nested KVM. That + graphics rendering on the CPU makes it not so responsive. It's useable enough in many cases though.

ASinclair··on I want to live like Costco people
The thing is you can save a ton of money on a few non-food items to make it worth it. Just over-the-counter medicines save me a huge chunk of the membership fee. Then there are just random household goods: paper products, trash bags, dishwasher detergent, etc.
ASinclair··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
There are tariffs on every country, not just China. This isn’t like his first term in office. Can you speak to the impacts of those tariffs?
ASinclair··on Ford F-150 Lightning outsold the Cybertruck and was then canceled for poor sales
Also dealers are one of the most reliable GOP funding sources. The GOP does not like EVs.
ASinclair··on Changes to Android Open Source Project
They are not.
ASinclair··on Eat Real Food
Maybe there’s a miscommunication. I don’t believe that statement. It’s something that RFK Jr believes.
ASinclair··on Eat Real Food
Evidence of what exactly? That RFK Jr. focuses on healthy eating while vilifying vaccines and other established health practices?
ASinclair··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Hopefully this happens so people can stop blaming institutional investors for high home prices once this fails to work. Then maybe we can work on actually building homes.
ASinclair··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
> you allow for policy that doesn't maximize the cost of real estate over the interests of the majority of the population.

How do you think homeowners would feel about a policy that doesn't maximize the value of their homes. That's just another way to phrase "maximizing the cost of real estate"?

ASinclair··on Eat Real Food
The problem is the massive emphasis on eating as a part of health. As if eating right is the only thing you need to do to avoid all disease. That putting other substances (e.g. vaccines) in your body will make you unhealthy.
ASinclair··on The healthcare market is taxing reproduction out of existence
So your pastor or priest conveniently rejects you if you have a chronic illness.
ASinclair··on Nano Banana Pro
Have some examples?
ASinclair··on How OpenAI uses complex and circular deals to fuel its multibillion-dollar rise
They could try selling their services above cost.
ASinclair··on Americans can't afford their cars any more and Wall Street is worried
I live next to a busy city road. The loudest vehicles are motorcycles, cars with expensive, aftermarket exhausts, and large trucks. Not all cheap stuff.
ASinclair··on US airlines are pushing to remove protections for passengers and add more fees
Do adults have to fly? Certainly they could walk or swim to their destination.
ASinclair··on Using Claude Code to modernize a 25-year-old kernel driver
> There are currently multiple posts per day on HN that escalate into debates on LLMs being useful or not.

My main worry is whether they will be useful when priced above actual cost. I worry about becoming depending on these tools only for them to get prohibitively expensive.

ASinclair··on Why Everybody Is Losing Money On AI
Training costs keep exploding and several companies are providing frontier models. They'll have to continue shoveling tons of money into training just to stay in place with respect to the competition. So you can't just ignore training costs.
ASinclair··on Why you can’t grow cool-climate plants in hot climates
It's been a while since I attended one. I remember some of the most interesting talks were the ones I was not particularly interested in from the descriptions. Mostly talks about the history of San Francisco:

* Ghost signs: https://sf.nerdnite.com/2014/06/04/nerd-nite-sf-49/

* Neon signs: https://sf.nerdnite.com/2017/10/11/nerd-nite-sf-89-brain-sci...

* Dairy farming: https://sf.nerdnite.com/2019/08/14/nerd-nite-sf-111-butterfl...

ASinclair··on Why you can’t grow cool-climate plants in hot climates
He also has a YouTube channel. I first saw him speak at SF Nerd Nite which is a speaker series in San Francisco. He’s very entertaining and basically a self taught botanist.
ASinclair··on An Update on Pytype
There is still a team within Google in charge of this space.
ASinclair··on The Folk Economics of Housing
> If a $450,000 house in a Chicago suburb is freed up by its owners moving to a $700,000 condo in Seattle, the people who can't afford a house in Seattle don't see the benefit of the condo building and aren't going to buy the house in Chicago

Is the existence of the $700,000 condo the limiting factor for those people moving? If it isn't built would they instead bid up an existing unit in Seattle and put it more out of reach of existing Seattle residents?
