AMerrit··on Microsoft Defender ATP for Linux is now generally available
I work at a similar cybersecurity company and I can almost guarantee this is the case. Company policy will be to put an AV on everything, and the CSO/procurement always prefer a one size fits all solution so they only have to deal with one vendor. How well it works on Linux is secondary to the fact that it makes it easy for them to hit all the checkboxes in compliance reports.
AMerrit··on The largest city in each 10x10 degree latitude/longitude box
I had a friend who worked up in Alert while he was in the air force. It may be one of the most remote places on the map, it's essentially an out grown air force base/research station, there would be nothing there if not for the cold war.
AMerrit··on Farm in SE Australia is growing native grains for flour and bread
It's funny how counter this is to my own experience. I've never had a problem finding barley or buckwheat before, and even if the grocery stores don't carry it Bulk Barn is everywhere in Canada.
AMerrit··on Climate Change Is Killing Alpine Skiing as We Know It
I think you're thinking of the classic shifting baseline example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shifting_baseline It comes up a lot when talking about fisheries stocks, and how each generation basically resets to what is a normal amount of fish.
AMerrit··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
I'll wait for more information before ditching Google Cloud, but this will certainly speed up getting a fall-back/migration plan together for what we've got on the service.
AMerrit··on TikTok hits 1.5B downloads, outperforming Instagram
You're thinking of vine, which felt like it was just hitting critical mass when twitter killed it off. TikTok has grown so big because of the boost it started with from people looking for a vine replacement. At least that's what it feels like, I don't have the numbers to back it up.
AMerrit··on Discontinuing Support for NSFW Imgur r/subsections Associated with Reddit
Yeah I've uploaded stuff in the past to imgur for sharing on reddit and come back later to some very strange comments.
AMerrit··on The American Brain
"Gun Owner" is a way people self identify and cling to in a very irrational way. At least I assume that's what they are talking about.
AMerrit··on The most effective way to tackle climate change? Plant a trillion trees
The light difference between winter and summer get too extreme for most trees far enough north. The soil is also extremely poor. This gets brought up by people who think Canada would be hugely successful in a warmer climate, but even if there's no permafrost, the growing season won't change.
AMerrit··on QuadrigaCX CEO allegedly traded millions in fake funds to fund luxury lifestyle
This whole QuadrigaCX saga has certainly soured a lot of people on crypto here in Canada.
AMerrit··on China’s Pig Pandemic
The title is alarmist, but the article backs it up somewhat. The handling of this pandemic (even if it only affects pigs) can tell us how they may inadequately handle an epidemic among people. It also factors into inflation in the Chinese economy as pork is one of the primary sources of protein for many Chinese. Food supply instability in China is good for no one.
AMerrit··on Norway’s Island with a Population of 1
Reminds me of Port Hood Island in Nova Scotia.

AMerrit··on US Cities Are Becoming More Dangerous for Cyclists and Pedestrians
Yeah Canadian driving culture is surprisingly hostile. Even here in New Brunswick where people are stereotyped as slow old drivers that stop to let pedestrians to cross we had people openly posting on social media about wanting to crash into bikers when they put in new laws about giving bikes space on the road (put into place because of bikers getting hit.)
AMerrit··on New Peanut Allergy Drug Shows ‘Lifesaving’ Potential
We've been doing this with my son here in Canada for the past 3 months. It's pretty scary, but after having multiple people with peanut allergies tell me they wish they could have had this we've hammered down on it. There have been side effects (diarrhea, mild eczema), but they've mellowed out after the first month. I hope things work out for your daughter with the treatment.
AMerrit··on New Peanut Allergy Drug Shows ‘Lifesaving’ Potential
Very similar experience with my son. We gave him a bamba (an Israeli peanut snack) at 6 months and he had an anaphylactic reaction. Very scary! However, we did get to see an allergist and have been doing OIT (like in the article) with him for the past 3 months now. Soon he'll be taking his doses as portions of bamba, which is very surreal.
AMerrit··on The Warlike Origins of ‘Going Dutch’
I find it interesting that someone would think that. Where I grew up in Atlantic Canada they're really common, if a bit old fashioned. They also came up in Boy Scouts a lot. Basically a go to culinary tool for old ladies and young outdoorsmen.
