AC__··on Stripe Is the New PayPal
All of these payments services are going to die within 5 years anyway. Before people get all pissy and down vote this assertion let me you remind you that a massive(and growing) portion of the world has become completely disillusioned with the global fiat currency system(or perhaps just enlightened as to how it works?), regardless, its days are numbered. I am not however entirely convinced that cryptocurrencies, namely bitcoin, aren't in fact a creation of global financiers anticipating rejection of the fiat currency model, but fuck it we'll see.
AC__··on Ask HN: What are the greatest discoveries in the last few years?
Just off the top of my my head: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRACO_%28antiviral%29 CRISPR as mentioned, anything nano(robotics, surgery etc.), as well as stem cell tech.
AC__··on Ask HN: What are the greatest discoveries in the last few years?
Down-voters know I am on to them...
AC__··on Ask HN: What are the greatest discoveries in the last few years?
I went a massive life extension technology reading binge a few months back, IMHO it is, right now, possible to extend human life indefinitely.
AC__··on Ask HN: What are the greatest discoveries in the last few years?
Vampires! Technically speaking, parabiosis. Although it is not actually a new discovery at all, personally I'm convinced there are humans who have already transfused young blood plasma(as the linked article points out illegal stem cell transplants are common as well). Yeah, that's right, vampires.

AC__··on Ask HN: Are there any angels investing in the marijuana industry?
Yeah, I could do business with Snoop Dogg. You just can't pass him a joint you want back..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMp2WfOw2-4
AC__··on Ask HN: Are there any angels investing in the marijuana industry?
Thanks, I followed your advice and see there are in fact several. I am going to create a start-up profile and see if I can get a bite.

It would literally take me 546 Days 19 Hours 30 Minutes 40.26 Seconds to download this dataset. I'm sure it reads like horror though.
AC__··on Fracking Has Not Had Big Effect on Water Supply, E.P.A. Says While Noting Risks
This is the response I received(astonishingly fast) after writing an email inquiring about the total figure of drinking water contamination cases:

"Thanks for your email. To clarify--the purpose of the study was not to count every instance of impacts to drinking water resources. The purpose was to follow the water and to better understand the potential vulnerabilities. In the draft assessment we looked at all the hydraulic fracturing activities that may have had potential impacts to drinking water resources and make mention of specific events throughout the chapters that serve as examples and illustrate vulnerabilities.

Based upon the information brought together for the assessment – information drawn from over 950 citations– we did not identify widespread impacts on drinking water resources due to hydraulic fracturing operations. The information available is adequate to qualitatively characterize the frequency of occurrence as being small, particularly relative to the number of wells that are hydraulically fractured each year. That same information, however, is not sufficient to quantitatively measure occurrence nationwide. That was one of the information gaps highlighted by the assessment.

I hope this is helpful!

So they would have you believe that they don't know how often it happens, however, they do know it doesn't happen often. Yeah, this is the type of science, no fuck that, pseudo-science, that leads to dubious legislation.

AC__··on Fracking Has Not Had Big Effect on Water Supply, E.P.A. Says While Noting Risks
Also this "A 2009 ProPublica investigation found that contamination was far more prevalent than indicated in the report, citing more than 1,000 cases tied to drilling and fracking that had been documented by courts and state and local governments." http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Fracking_and_water_poll...
AC__··on Fracking Has Not Had Big Effect on Water Supply, E.P.A. Says While Noting Risks
They have NO evidence, I downloaded their full report in search of the "official" total of cases where drinking water has been contaminated due to hydraulic fracturing and it is omitted from the report they simply make the assertion that "the number of identified cases, however, was small compared to the number of hydraulically fractured wells" This study doesn't serve to advance our understanding of the hazards of hydraulic fracturing in the least, it's 999 pages of nothing! Down vote all you want

Yes and now enjoy methane concentrations 17x higher(I view that as the difference between being potable and not)...http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fracking-for-natur...

Riiiiiggghht https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LBjSXWQRV8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7B9-tmudFg0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U01EK76Sy4A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U01EK76Sy4A There are THOUSANDS of similar reports from fracked areas all over North America. That isn't the only problem either, when they do what's called "venting" there is large release of carcinogenic chemicals(although some large scale operations mitigate this by capping the vent stack to collect the gases in practice this is the exception not the rule) We are doing it in Canada as well, absolute insanity! Here is a great documentary http://www.cbc.ca/player/Shows/Shows/The+Nature+of+Things/ID...

AC__··on New monitoring powers 'to tackle terrorism' proposed
All 5-eyes partner nations are passing egregious legislation such as this, these programs are being brought in under the guise of combating "terrorism" however are more designed to monitor and quell civil unrest and thwart would be dissidents.

AC__··on CEO cuts his pay by almost $1M to give his employees big raises
Imagine where our species would be if all efforts were contributed to betterment of society. Right now the missing piece to researcher A's puzzle is sitting on researcher B's bench because company X hasn't figured out a way to extract profits yet. If we managed to move toward an Ubuntu(I'm talking Michael Tellinger not Canonical) contributionist social model we would make more technological advancement in 1 year than we've seen in the past 50, maybe even 100, years. CEO's coming to the realization there is more to the human experience than profits is just the start.
AC__··on HN Cheaters: Catch me if you can
Any system that ranks popularity undoubtedly can and will be gamed, it's as simple as that. This is how news outlets end up reporting ridiculous statistics or outrageously skewed public opinion polls. In 2013 it was estimated that between 5.5% and 11.5% of facebook's users were fake accounts, but their likes and votes are real. I'd hazard the guess, based on the shear volume of global propaganda perpetrated lately, that number is substantially larger today.
AC__··on Ask HN: Why do I have to struggle with everything?
There are many complex factors contributing to your perceived socio-economic well being or lack there of, I don't have all the answers. I do have some advice though, stop running a pity party, I have fallen into this trap myself in the past. Here is some perspective, every 10 seconds a child dies from malnourishment. Moving forward there are beacons of hope, knowledge is becoming open, accessible and free for almost everyone instead of being sold as a commodity and I can't imagine fiat currency surviving the decade...I mean come on people lol(economics is pseudo-science)
AC__··on Leaked TPP Investment Chapter Reveals Serious Threat to User Safeguards
Exactly, Canada(my native country) has already signed, any Canadian citizen that is aware, is opposed. We also have a bill currently tabled in Canadian parliament called Bill C-51 which is an absolutely absurd piece of legislation, it will effectively muzzle all lawful protest in Canada because it will allow the government to deem a project "critical infrastructure" at will and anyone protesting then falls under the blanket definition of terrorist and can be detained for up to a year without access to legal counsel. At the same time they are introducing changes to informant protection laws that will allow them to literally enter evidence from completely anonymous sources i.e. completely fabricated lol. Sadly we no longer practice democracy in my country.

I bookmarked this for a later date. I am currently taking a Coursera course and one of the projects touched on Monte Carlo methods, they are super cool, I implemented a rudimentary AI that plays tic-tac-toe(well) in like 70 lines of Python.
