8en··on Show HN: Particle - News, Organized
This is a very nicely executed app. What is the revenue model?
8en··on YC: Requests for Startups
Cool list! I hope yc will also fund creative consumer companies. Ways to have fun, enjoy life, build healthy habits, cherish memories, dream about the future, and deepen relationships with friends. This is 100% selfish - I want more fun and meaningful products to use.

What service was used to create the Ai voice? It's one of the first I've heard that sounds pleasant and life like.
8en··on My Pebble mood tracker app from 2016
Thanks for finding this bug. We'll get it fixed soon.
8en··on My Pebble mood tracker app from 2016
Yes, we will do translations in the future!
8en··on My Pebble mood tracker app from 2016
Hi, I'm working on How We Feel. I'm eager to make it more useful. If there is anyone on this thread interested in helping, please send a note to ben@howwefeel.org.

So far, I've learned that the biggest benefit of mood tracking is the process of tracking: taking a moment to reflect on how you feel, name the emotion, and think about why you feel the way you do. The next big opportunity is to teach people effective strategies for dealing with their emotions in a healthy way (even if that just means accepting the emotion without judgement).

As an aside, I also loved my Pebble and physical buttons :D

8en··on Instagram’s co-founders are back with Artifact, a kind of TikTok for text
I'm excited about this. Kevin and Mikey are 2 of the most talented product builders out there. And, I miss having a really great go-to news reader app.
8en··on Rewind: The Search Engine for Your Life
I really admire the ambition of this product. I've noticed how much I use the internet as a "second brain". Being able to quickly get back to things would improve my life.

The UI also looks very good for a first version. Excited to give this a try!

8en··on Weebly's SnapAds: Survival Of The Fittest Meets Madison Avenue
For landing pages, I'd recommend Google Website Optimizer. It's a pretty sophisticated multivariate testing tool. https://www.google.com/analytics/siteopt/splash?hl=en
8en··on Ask: OK, I've got my Web 2.0 website. How do I promote it?
I might consider changing the name to something more direct - for example, wikiautolinks, or wikilinkster, or wikilinkr, or wikiglue
8en··on Dropbox launches (YC summer 07)
I'm excited about drop box. Congratulations guys!
8en··on 8aweek and RescueTime
That's it. I'm leaving rescue time to use 8aWeek.

Just kidding. I agree with you - conversely, a complete lack of competition is probably a bad sign.

8en··on Ask YC: Need advice on direction of site.
I don't know what an avatar service is. Is it a picture of me? I think other people might not know what an avatar service is either.
8en··on $200M market for a product catering to prejudice. If you had a similar product idea or implementation that could make you rich; would you still execute?
I think there is a basic difference between a skin lightener and a tanning product. A more apt analogy would be 'hair relaxers' that were popular in the 1960's and 70's, these products helped African Americans straighten their hair. There is a pretty rich dialog about these products that I think would be worth reading to get a better appreciation of the context and controversy here.

I personally would not want to market a product that advanced an image of beauty in a culture with documented history of racism and classicism against people with dark skin. But that's just me.

8en··on Readr -- my latest site. Feedback is appreciated.
I'm just impressed that you managed to snag the url Readr. I think that alone might be worth a few thousand users. :)
8en··on Nah Seriously! Who designs the YC startups websites? Loving it.
I agree that these sites don't necessarily require an MFA to design, but they do require really careful thinking about exactly how the user will use site - not just which rounded font and pastel color scheme to use. Designs may be simple, but simple does not imply that they aren't well thought out. Fortunately, this is precisely what a good engineer should be thinking about the whole time.

[As an aside those faded blue gradients make me want to throw a rotten tomato at Jason Fried.]

8en··on Facebook down...
For me, it's interesting to realize how UN-important something is when I don't have it :)
8en··on What idea(s) do you regret not implementing?
I totally agree with you. However, "coopted" might be portraying it in a slightly differetn light than is warranted. There is a difference between being better at execution and walking away with the code that was being used to implement one idea, and implementing it yourself.
8en··on Post-Mortem of a Tokyo-based Web Start-up
All criticism of his startup strategy aside, his web apps are beautifully executed. I didn't realize that Jason Fried was the American Yong Fook.

8en··on Startup Weekend failed, but lessons learned
Is anyone else confused by the premise of startup weekend? It sounds like a fun idea, but the whole concept seems a little silly to me.

8en··on [dead]
this is a great example of why a down arrow would be nice.
8en··on FanState.com Launches: YCNews thoughts?
I would take a look at BallHype.com. It seems like it's well-designed and well-executed, but hasn't taken off just yet. It would be good to understand what happened - whether they were too broad in focus, or whether there is something about the digg model that doesn't quite resonate for sports fans. As a side note, I would not require registration to vote, and I would not require a valid email address. It don't feel like I should have to send you my email address to say that an article is good or bad.
8en··on Microsoft Announces Surface Computer
My world is coming apart, as MSFT continues to release....well, cool stuff.
8en··on How many page views does a website need to produce a month before it can get advertisers?
You are actually welcome to use other contextual advertising networks as long as you clearly distinguish Google Ads from Other Networks Ads. This is easier than it sounds, as the standard AdSense unit has an "ads by google" image
