888666··on What if we made advertising illegal?
I agree. Many things we benefit from are free or significantly reduced in price due to the profitability of advertising. I would not want to live in a world where I'd have to find everything through word of mouth and not get to try free versions of services.
888666··on $250 remaining of L&D budget – what to spend on?
I used mine on a Claude AI pro subscription. You can get a year billed upfront for $216. Falls under productivity/learning tool.
888666··on NotebookLM: An AI Notebook
To warn users so they're aware that the lifespan of the product they're using may be very short, and therefore they may lose something they put a lot of investment in. It's empathy.
888666··on A complete guide to getting what you want (2018)
As a woman, men who are focused on stuff like this (beyond basic physical and financial health) scare and repel me.
888666··on Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps
The reason why I dislike it is that, compared to 3rd party apps, it's slow and the design is overly busy. I prefer a more minimalistic design. The excessive tracking doesn't help.
888666··on Coinbase CEO: we're preparing to go to court with the U.S. SEC
If it's so clear, and people disagree, wouldn't it be common sense to just say it? Declining to comment makes no sense here.
888666··on Thinking hard makes the brain tired
This has genuinely worked for reducing cognitive load for me.
888666··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
This is very interesting, but this doesn't seem like a good thing to me. We don't need to be productive all the time. As he mentions, he had little time to introspect; I much prefer having downtime where I can stop and think for a while or run into something new and interesting within highly curated social media. If this truly made him happy, then good for him, but I would put more effort into being comfortable with being "unproductive" as long as my needs are being sufficiently met.
888666··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
I use software for most of the things you mentioned and I don't pay for any subscriptions. I have always found tools I enjoy that give me what I want for free.
888666··on Ask HN: Was Donald Knuth completely wrong about good programming practice?
I don't believe I comment excessively, but in code reviews I've only ever been told to remove comments rather than to add more while working as a software engineer.
888666··on ‘Young, male and aimless’: Why are men in India delaying marriage?
It's not voluntary for many people in India.
888666··on Ask HN: Why did smartphones become a single point of failure?
How does providing information have anything to do with placing blame?
888666··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Selling robots
888666··on Life is not short
Could that possibly be a failure on the part of your future self rather than on your past self?
888666··on Changing jobs during the Great Resignation
Seeking financial independence is more about having the freedom to choose whether to keep working or not. Many pursue the FI over the RE and find great joy and meaning in their work. If you'd be in deep trouble if you suddenly lost your job because you're not financially independent, then yes I think you're a slave to your job. People in FIRE communities constantly say to build the life you want to live and then save for it. Not enjoying the journey is a FIRE failure.
888666··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
Not global, but I landed a high paying remote job without a LC-style interview. However, I did spend a lot of time studying data structures & algorithms for such an interview, and in this interview I was tasked with looking at existing code and explaining it. It happened to use an algorithm I had learned in my studying for LC, so it made things much easier to explain. Additionally, just the other day, I ended up using something on the job that I had learned in my LC studies in order to efficiently find duplicate items. It's simple, but I wouldn't have known to do this if I hadn't studied for it. I find it's been very well-worth my time. While preparing to get a job, I still put more hours into side projects.

Also, I don't really get what you mean by saying you don't want to practice because you know you'll be anxious. The whole point of practicing is to get rid of that anxiety. Companies like to see how well you can perform under pressure, and how well you can communicate through that. The LC is a small part of the interview in my opinion.

888666··on There's never been a better time to build websites
I used https://neocities.org/ recently to make a simple static html website with no issues and no configuration. And I'm someone who usually uses the more "advanced" stuff. It's nice having the freedom to chase a little nostalgia sometimes.
888666··on Cloudflare Pages goes full stack
It does not.
888666··on Quitting Twitter
Sure, but I use Twitter to relax and enjoy specific types of content. It doesn't need to be your source of knowledge.
