8589934591··on Dentist broke his patients’ teeth to make millions installing crowns, jury finds
Anecdotal. Here in India, I have also found a high variability in recommendations by dentists. Every relative/friend of mine has been told that the previous dental work was bad or ineffective.

- Both my wife and I had gotten braces at a young age like 15-20 years back. Our current dentist told us that the braces are the reason for our enamel degradation. I have received 3 RCTs and 8 crowns right now. Wife has more crowns than me. I still have a molar which was grinded cos "there's a cavity from inside out"

- Wife's previous dentist used to do her fillings. There was a year gap between consults due to the pandemic. When we went for the next checkup the dentist was adamant that the previous dentist did a bad job and refused to accept that she was the previous dentist.

- I got my braces done twice from scratch from two different dentists cos the second one said it was done wrongly.

- There are dentists who "clean" the teeth just because you wanted a consult. A relative was on blood thinners due to heart surgery and even though the dentist was informed about this, the "cleaning" made them bleed so much they had to go to the ER.

Some takeaways my wife and I have is to not trust dentists that much, take care of our teeth properly by flossing and brushing twice a day with gum massage, avoid sugary foods, quick mouth wash with water after each meal, visit dentists only when there is pain/infection/something suspicious.

In my country, dental is a degree that is separate from the regular physician's degree. To say it in US terms, one can become a dentist without having a general MD (MBBS in India). This seems really off to me, why would you want a specialization to be separate from the rest of the body? Like, you can't study about teeth in your general medical studies? Is recommending expensive treatments a justification for their investment into the profession and equipment?

I hate dentists...

8589934591··on How to make Docker images even smaller
Has anyone had successes building smaller python images? I have always found it challenging to build it with Alpine as the base image. It just never finishes building. I end up pulling the python base image which uses debian. After installing pip packages the image pretty much comes to 250-300 mb at the minimum.

EDIT: I should add that I already have multi stage builds in place. My main dependencies are fastapi, gunicorn, redis, sqlalchemy, snowflake-sqlalchemy, snowflake-connector-python, fastapi-pagination, pymysql, fastapi-redis-cache, pandas. I'm willing to forego pandas if the size of the image reduces.

Hey please have a look at my reply above. My wife would definitely love to make better friends to talk about something other than clothes/earrings. As a woman how do you handle such situations when your self worth is evaluated by the newer clothes/things you wear as opposed to talking about your success in your career?
8589934591··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
I agree with you. I think I should have been clearer. By mending I meant small tears or threads coming off. Not full blown tears which can just be used to clean your table.
8589934591··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
Thank you for your reply.

> On the other hand, my wife gets great pleasure from getting new clothing. She has a lot more than I do, and still she buys more. She is genuinely excited about wearing and showing off the new clothes she bought. When she gets a compliment about them, she is very, very happy.

My wife feels the same way. We both have discussed this and have a hypothesis that the compliments for her new clothes is received more often from women (and men sometimes) who belong to the previous generations. We feel this is partially because during their lives buying clothes was more of a luxury than an everyday thing, mainly due to scarcity. Traditionally new clothes have been bought for festivals and kept and cherished for the years to come. This came to around 5-10 new clothes per year. But now we can just buy whatever whenever.

> friends aren't going to compliment the same clothes again. To get those feelings, she needs new clothes.

Another observation we have is that we have been groomed by the previous generation to like newer clothes that we arent able to appreciate the other things in our lives. My wife has a successful business which she started at the start of the pandemic, but this gets a lot less discussion than what she wears or what plants she grows at home. We feel this is also reflected by how the previous generation might have defined self worth for a woman.

8589934591··on Mapping my walks with OSRM and Rust
Would Rust be the most suitable language as a drop in replacement for Python? I have always thought it would be Go.
8589934591··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
I have started buying clothes from USA _because_ they are of higher quality. Even though they are made in my India, they are usually not available for sale here. The quality and variety available for exports is drastically different from what is available for the local market. Mine have lasted at least 2-3 years before I buy a new set of clothes.

I wonder why there is a huge churn in USA to keep buying new clothes. Is it just more affordable/cheaper to buy than to mend your clothes? Easier access that makes it binge buy quickly? Too many special occasions? I am confused cos I feel they haven't seen inferior quality of clothing that they don't keep their belongings longer.

8589934591··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
For emacs I use doom-one-light https://github.com/hlissner/emacs-doom-themes/tree/screensho...

I wish there were light themes which are consistent across apps. The only ones I've usually found consistent are Atom One Light. I usually stick to light themes because it is more comfortable on the eyes, provided your environment is also well lit. I find this easier to do than staying with dark environments and stepping away from the PC to be blinded by light. This and lower brightness helps.

Adding to the above, light themes are usually the default provided by most apps (except discord in my experience) which makes it easier for me to get up and running with any app / system rather than trying to get a dark mode theme to work for the app (if they provide one). I honestly want to spend my time better than going down that rabbit hole of "the ideal dark system". On top of that there's the question of whether the theme is maintained consistently and whether it is supported or abandoned.

8589934591··on Do you ever avoid submitting something on HN so devs won't ruin it?
I can relate to this so much. In my first job I was working with analysts who spent a lot of time generating reports. I was a SQL dev who had learnt python recently and automated my report generation. It cut down work from 1 day per report to less than a second. I shared this with my manager who shared it with the team. The team ended up sending me the files for me to run it. And the ones who wanted to run the script on their system ended up having me on-call support half the time fixing issues unrelated to the script.

I cited a system upgrade and informed everyone the scripts were gone. We're back to how we were, except I had a lot of time in my hands now. Since it was my first job I felt bad for not helping out people. After my experience I feel it's not worth it.

You can say the same arguments for having a really well defined customized editor and your coworkers wanting the productivity you have. I showcase using pycharm, but I do my actual work using emacs.

SQLAlchemy's core is a great option to use for building dynamic queries. I wonder if we could use python and go to interface with each other for building queries.

go -> python-sqlalchemy-build-query -> run query from go and get result.

I love Django a lot too. It has made MVPs really easy to deliver. At the same time, I am interested in understanding about the disadvantages/quirks of using Django. Do you have more examples that you could share?
8589934591··on Ask HN: What are some of the best well-written books on computer science?
If the person has some good-ish math background, then a good intro book for CS would be Sedgewick/Kayne's https://introcs.cs.princeton.edu/java/home/. The exposition is succinct.

If math is not a strong suit then https://htdp.org/ and https://dcic-world.org/ are good books to take up. The exposition is really good.

8589934591··on Ask HN: What are some of the best well-written books on computer science?
It's a good book if you have started out with say python and know basic programming. If you have functional programming exposure or if you have gone a bit beyond basic programming, it's not that much of an addition to your knowledge. This is my takeaway from the book.
8589934591··on Ask HN: What are some of the best well-written books on computer science?
The book is certainly approachable to read and understand. Especially with some amount of background math. I think the book is hyped so much because people don't have the right background and/or find it difficult at the beginning and give up. Same goes for SICP. And people think the books are really good just because it's hard. It's not, it's approachable given the right effort.

8589934591··on Why Co–Star Uses Haskell
Are there examples of moving from Python to Haskell? Would love to read and evaluate such options since I'm in dire need of moving away from Python to a typed language and Haskell seems like an interesting choice.
8589934591··on Physics Student Earns PhD at Age 89
I'm in my late 20s and my wife works on her own startup (non tech tangible product). I wonder if there are others who have their spouses working and how the marriage factored into their decision to pursue a CS PhD. I'm not from USA.

My primary concerns are her startup tanking, me being unavailable for her mental health and of course a steady income.

I sometimes wonder maybe I should pursue a CS PhD after settling down financially by late 40s.

8589934591··on Ask HN: What language to learn after Python?
Backend works for me. Frontend is mostly for trivial side projects that I visit on and off.

If you don't mind, what's your opinion on Java Vs scala? I keep hearing anecdotally that scala is better but without any concrete reasons.

8589934591··on Ask HN: What language to learn after Python?
I would love to know your strategy. But I dont think the problem is paralysis by analysis. Each language listed by me gives something unique other than Python. My challenge is more about evaluating a language without understanding deeply what it offers. It would ideally be nice to learn something interesting which also has job opportunities. But jm willing to learn more than one for personal growth and for job opportunities.
8589934591··on How to optimize your GitHub for job interviews
Github is the most useless metric to get interviews. Would rather just reach out for referrals. I don't think Github would apply for experienced professionals unless they contributed something significant to open source.
8589934591··on Ask HN: Is all code patchy and bad in FANG?
I'm in a similar position in a non FANG company. I almost made the similar mistake of telling people it was a bad codebase. I did inform my manager though. My manager and I are new hires in the company so it didn't seem like an issue to be vocal to him.

I have seen my manager do the exact same thing as you did. He went to the architect behind the codebase and started complaining and raising hell. Since my manager is on better terms with the higher ups things are swaying towards his end else it'd be a fiasco.

My suggestion is that when you encounter such code bases either go with it or do some small refactors in the smallest of code and say "hey I feel this is a better way to do it. Can you review this?". I have felt this has usually worked for me. Additionally, instead of stating it outright that the code is bad, ask them to explain the code and the reasons behind it. If you are still on good terms and they don't see you as a threat, then you can ask questions and maybe suggest alternatives with a working prototype. This way you still come off as an "honest" person who's trying to do something good. This works in your favor when looked at by your manager and upper management. This is apart from the features that you're tasked to push.

Hope that helps.

8589934591··on Ask HN: How to teach young kids about money?
These are things I was taught when I grew up, which I think I'll also follow when I raise my children.

0. Save first. Spend the rest.

1. No money / allowances for doing chores. Chores are part of your life in your household.

2. Maintain a piggy bank or a notebook to note down what you have received and put it in savings. This would be the start of your wealth. My parents didn't adjust this amount to account for inflation, but I plan to do this for my children. They also kept the money in their bank account, but I kept track of the money in my notebook.

3. Maintain a notebook showcasing income/expense wrt your piggy bank.

4. After a certain age, sit with your child and explain the monthly expenses and investments and why they constitute a % of the total income/expense. Additionally teach them about investments and insurance.

5. Explain why certain things are outside of your capability to buy stuff. This would enable them to understand that not everything is affordable.
