80mph··on Jeff Bezos will fly on the first passenger spaceflight of Blue Origin in July
He might not have used his newspaper, but AWS was instrumental in de-platforming Parler after the Jan 6 mutiny.
80mph··on Amazon Suspends Amazon-Native Brands Mpow and Aukey
I came across a recommendation for Mpow on Twitter, and was wondering why they are so hard to find. I still ended up ordering them, just via Walmart.

80mph··on Microbial ecosystems in the mouth and gut are linked to many ills
>>The symptoms only really present themself at night when going to bed, as I guess I have no other stimuli to focus on. During the day it's basically not an issue.

Do you take night showers? If your house has hard water or your water dept. adds excessive chlorine, then either of those could be the culprit.

I love my Kobo e-reader. Syncs perfectly with my library and Pocket, and using the natural light feature hasn't hampered my ability to fall asleep.

80mph··on Ask HN: Newly Remote Workers – Where Are You Moving?
You would have to be insane to move because you've recently been given remote work privileges, especially in the middle of a recession caused by an ongoing pandemic.

This is why I'm staying put in San Jose, at least for now.

80mph··on Independently Poor: A Twist on FU Money – a.k.a. “FU, Money”
>>In other words, I had a degree of independence and agency that you normally only see in the Jet Set -- people who get called independently wealthy -- or comfortably well-off retirees. I had more control over my time and my life than your typical working stiff.

No offense, but I would not attribute any sense of freedom or higher degree of control in one's life to receiving alimony. What happens if/when the ex-spouse prematurely dies or has their bank account hacked?

80mph··on California accuses Cisco of job discrimination based on Indian employee's caste

I really enjoy reading your pro-housing arguments. I'm stuck in a debate with a NIMBYist on Nextdoor, and would appreciate your perspective. Do you have an email address I can contact you at? This is in the South bay.
80mph··on E-books at local libraries: a fight between publishers and librarians
You might like a Kobo E-reader. Zero distractions and sneaky "special offers" options, and it has a traditional e-ink display.
80mph··on E-books at local libraries: a fight between publishers and librarians
With my local library (Santa Clara county), I've noticed that there is no requirement to revalidate my local address. After I move away, I would presumably join my new library, but I'd still have the option to log back in on my Kobo E-reader using my SCCL membership. I love Overdrive, but I think a lot of users abuse the system in this way.

Even if he took a supplement, it's possible he wasn't absorbing it properly. Most supplement makers are reluctant to include high doses of Vitamin A in retinyl form, because it can cause liver damage. However, vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene has it's own host of absorption issues. In addition to being fat-soluble (i.e., must be taken with a sufficient amount of fat, or else it will compete with any other fat-soluble vitamins in the meal), it is also affected by high dosage of certain minerals. From ConsumerLab:

High doses of ferrous iron (but not ferric iron) or other minerals (calcium, magnesium, and zinc) from supplements may decrease the absorption of carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, lycopene and astaxanthin, from foods and/or supplements. This is likely due to a reaction between carotenoids and the divalent ions of these minerals, making the carotenoids less bioavailable (Corte-Real, Food Chem 2016; Biehler, J Nutr 2011). It is best to take carotenoid supplements at a different time of day than a supplement or meal containing large amounts of a mineral.

80mph··on Ask HN: What’s your favorite bad startup idea?
A dating/carpool app. Your first date is the carpool.
80mph··on Show HN: Saag as a Service – macronutrient-portioned Indian spinach curry
I also would love to see an Indian Chipotle. But for any in the South Bay, these 2 are also like Chipotle:

-Srasa Kitchen (Southeast Asian): https://www.srasakitchen.com/

-Bibimbowl (Korean): http://www.thebibimbowl.com/menu.php

I'm sure there are others, but these 2 are my tried and true favorites.

80mph··on Arrived – a new model of home ownership
Confirmed, Equity does this nationwide. I've transferred leases in SoCal and the DC metro area. There are a number of requirements, but it was extraordinarily helpful to not have to scramble finding a replacement tenant, so that I could just focus on moving.
80mph··on Mosquitoes Changed Everything
And even after heat treatment, the histamine they poop out can remain for up to 3 months. Stubborn little twits.

FWIW, I found your points interesting, and I agree that all mortgages are about the ability to repay. Wasn't that at the root of the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis?

And ability to repay, in my understanding= Capital, Capacity, Credit history, Collateral

-Capital: Down payment, loan fees, closing costs, escrow impounds, reserves, moving expenses

-Capacity: Current income, income history & future earning potential, Amount owed on installment accounts & revolving charge accounts

-Credit history: Current liabilities and past history

-Collateral: i.e., Is the house worth what you are paying for it, and if not, that has to be fixed before closing.

I learned the above through a home-buyer's education class I'm taking in order to qualify for a down-payment assistance program (https://housingtrustsv.org/programs/empowerhomebuyersscc/).

Vanguard also offers 2FA with voice-automated calls. I wonder, would getting a landline and using that with a Yubikey be any more secure?

80mph··on Ask HN: Traveled 10k km for new job and was just shouted at. What do I do?
No job is perfect. There will always be difficult personalities wherever you go. Just remember that you work to live, and not the other way around. Treat this as a learning exercise for your next job.

I think "cultural wasteland" is stretching it a bit. A big part of culture is food, and SV is anything but a wasteland when it comes to food.
