7Z7··on I’m a Coastal Elite from the Midwest: The Real Bubble Is Rural America
>I was just repeating the comment, you'd have to ask the author.

But you are repeating and justifying this comment up and down the thread.

7Z7··on I’m a Coastal Elite from the Midwest: The Real Bubble Is Rural America
It may have been that at first, but you are also implying that there is a left to which that opinion applies. Where is that coming from?

edit: you answered below

7Z7··on The forces that drove this election’s media failure are likely to get worse
To quote sshumaker, above:

>..a 1% shift from Trump to Clinton would have resulted in her victory.

Here's an excellent analysis from five-thirty-eight: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-a-difference-2-perc...

7Z7··on The forces that drove this election’s media failure are likely to get worse
You are doing exactly what the article and the comments above are slating the left for doing: turning the issues that actually affect the other side every day, or which they want treated as important, into "imaginary issues".

You think identity politics are imaginary to the various minorities (of all descriptions) who just want equal footing and the ability to not deal with race and gender every day of their lives?

7Z7··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Society does not treat individuals as individuals. People are put into boxes every day, and it's really only now that people are saying, "hey you know that being white means you probably get put in less boxes, and boxes of less negative importance, let's just acknowledge that", that people are suddenly imploring people to not put people in boxes.

It's pretty clear that the "one" was comparative to the "one" celebrated by the diaspora, rather than "one" to tie all Indian cultures together.
7Z7··on India's demonetisation of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but there is no "without". The new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes will cover the difference.
7Z7··on Smoking “causes hundreds of DNA changes”
You mistake the doctor's statement to the BBC with what the BBC chose to extract from it, to publish in their single sentence precis.
7Z7··on Why America Needs India’s Rockets
How is India still in the bag? Don't they already have ICBM/nuke capabilities?
7Z7··on Ask HN: Who is firing?
The phrase is much older than that..

>Grose's The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue - 1811:

>>To send one to Coventry; a punishment inflicted by officers of the army on such of their brethren as are testy, or have been guilty of improper behaviour, not worthy the cognizance of a court martial. The person sent to Coventry is considered as absent; no one must speak to or answer any question he asks, except relative to duty, under penalty of being also sent to the same place. On a proper submission, the penitent is recalled, and welcomed by the mess, as just returned from a journey to Coventry.[0]

Just like TV shows..
7Z7··on Switching from macOS: The Basics
That depends on what kind of creative pro you are. In general I'd completely agree with you, but the major VFX vendors all run on Linux - with Nuke, Maya, Houdini, Modo, Clarisse, Mari, etc.
7Z7··on Why terrorism doesn’t work (2002) [pdf]
I came to make a similar comment, but more focussed on the diversity of Northern Ireland's current political landscape, as a direct result of the Troubles.

>you're never going to get my mom to spend money on VR

We'll see how personal they can make Play With Your Grand-Kids on the Other Side of the Country™, before I make that call.

7Z7··on Inside the Development of Light, the Tiny Digital Camera That Outperforms DSLRs
It's not Apple consumers, so much as the general public. I guarantee you that the average Android smartphone owner (if they even knew that dual cameras exist) thought Apple was the first to do so too. It's marketing. Positively for Apple, and negatively for the brands who have this tech and don't manage to get the word to the average person.

You make a big mistake in assuming owners of Android phones are more informed than Apple owners. Especially since Android owners outnumber Apple by quite a margin. You may be correct in assuming that the more informed consumer tends to purchase an Android device (though maybe not), but that doesn't lead to your conclusion.

7Z7··on Live Free or Die: The Origins of the Geek License Plate
Exactly. In Ireland the plate is made of [registration year]-[county]-[count of cars registered that year].

16-D-17891 : the 17891st car registered in Dublin, in the year 2016. They have recently introduced a third number in the year position to indicate 6 month sections (ie. 161 or 162).

7Z7··on Live Free or Die: The Origins of the Geek License Plate
The article is about both real vanity plates and fake promotional ones.
7Z7··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
..received a help request, along with all the other events (changed password, changed recovery email, changed phone number). Not just the help request.

FWIW, I don't think "just a buzzer" really does it justice. At least in the iPhone's case, it's more like a tiny insistent tap or click that you feel in your finger.
7Z7··on Shame on Y Combinator
That's all well and good, in the dreamy theoretical lands of academia. But when ideas turn into actions, and the actions have been seen before and we know the consequences, can we not criticize those who now promote them?
7Z7··on Why Your Next iPhone Won't Be Ceramic
>but the capabilities of the device eventually hit a wall.. >competing devices have a steeper learning curve, but they go all the way up to the hardware ceiling..

The problem with this line of thinking is it ignores the needs of the vast vast majority of current consumers. Most don't ever hit that wall you insist is inevitable. The ability to hit the hardware ceiling, via the investment of a steep learning curve is not attractive or necessary for most people. You are not a model consumer.

I believe the point was undoing the US-normative "we", rather than questioning the location of the speaker.

In fairness, that's a pretty privileged opinion to hold.
7Z7··on Shame on Y Combinator
I don't understand this line of reasoning, from either end of the spectrum. When those ideas have abhorrent real world consequences, that negatively affect real people's lives, why would we not criticize the people who hold them?
7Z7··on Shame on Y Combinator
>so much fear of reprisal

That's a bit dramatic. It wasn't fear of reprisal, it was disclosure of bias.

7Z7··on Netflix Now Only Has 31 Movies from IMDB's Top 250 List
My only problem with that is that you have not only paid for the content, but you've paid for the service as well. If you have to provide the service (in the form of finding a equivalent quality of work, receivable in a not inconvenient amount of time, and take the risk of potentially being flagged as a pirate on your ISP or sued by a rights holder), then it gets more complicated. The content creator certainly isn't getting 100% of the fee you've paid - so ultimately you are rewarding both the content creator and the shitty-service provider.

You may be OK losing the provider's portion to assure the creator is paid.
