7800··on “This destroys the RSA cryptosystem”
It actually states, “This destroyes the RSA cryptosystem.”

Seems a bit like the way an old pirate might speak, or at least someone hundreds of years old.

7800··on Physicists have filmed the oscillation of a time crystal
And whenever I hear time crystal, I think of bad sci-fantasy 80s movies.

“Mondor, you must grab the time crystal before the second moon equinox, or the Flarborg will be released from their electronic pen and ravage us like they’ve never ravaged before!”

“Oh. Well, we wouldn’t want that would we?”

Following that

Wheel of Fortune bot, who knows the whole dictionary and was trained with the data of all past games, wins a car and waves from the passenger seat.

7800··on Internet Archive Infrastructure
I have ADD and typically eschew watching video if I can get the same, quality content faster in text.

I loved this and watched it to the end.

To any that feel the need to hide or disparage this because it seems to promote doing things on your own vs in the cloud, this isn’t some tech ops Total Money Makeover where you read a book and you’re suddenly in some sort of anti-credit cult. This is hard shit, and it’s the basics of the hard shit that I grew up with as being the only shit.

Yes, you can serve your own data. No one should fault you for doing that if you want. It takes the humble intelligence of the core team and everyone at IA to pull that off at this scale. If you don’t want to do the hard things, you could use the cloud. There are financial reasons also for one or the other, just as there are reasons people live with their family, rent, lease, and buy homes and office space- an imperfect analogy of course.

I hope that some of the others that could go on to work at the big guys or have been working there and want a challenge consider applying to IA when there’s an opening. They’ve done an incredible job, and I look forward to the cool things they accomplish in the future.

This doesn’t seem to be linear time for exponential changes. It’s much slower.
7800··on Making SoA Tollerable
Tolerable(sp.), not tollerable.
7800··on Strange chip: Teardown of a vintage IBM token ring controller
What is the strangest thing you’ve ever seen in a chip? (e.g. has anything ever hinted at either a lucky accident that relied on physical laws that weren’t understood or tech that seemed too advanced to have been developed by the team that developed it?)

Also- the strange parts of the chip spell DDB, which may be relevant, as the V DDB is mentioned in one of the MAU design patents. Or DDB possibly could be the initials of the team or designers. It could have also served a practical purpose.

7800··on Can You Identify This Mysterious Old Writing?
Left-handed for those that need clarification. :)
7800··on Quitting Twitter
Doesn’t this by definition mean that you’re in a social media bubble with those who agree with you?
7800··on How to issue a central bank digital currency
The internet enabled an explosion of growth of useful data and communication.

Changing the currency system just because the old one wasn’t broken enough is not a good idea.

That’s someone who understands bubble physics. They tend to join like that before they pop.
7800··on Show HN: Can’t afford Bloomberg Terminal? No prob, I built the next best thing
I thought they were too busy Snapchatting themselves with their gold iPhone 12 pros in diamond-encrusted cases with ruby-encrusted selfie sticks.
7800··on Show HN: Can’t afford Bloomberg Terminal? No prob, I built the next best thing
Not to the proud family whose surname is Parody.

Also those representing parity overheard you and may have a bit to talk with you about.

7800··on How to issue a central bank digital currency
The majority of money moving today doesn’t seem to need an additional system.
7800··on LinkedIn is building a gig marketplace
That’s what I’ve heard. They may lead you on to keep you on the hook in case they need you without even getting work from you. This isn’t really a scam; it’s just about them wasting your time. And there are so many suckers that they can be picky about who they do this to.

If you really want to freelance or have a startup, you have to be able to differentiate these people from legit opportunities. That can be extremely difficult; someone that seems like a scammer could be ready to pay a great rate or invest in your company; someone else that sounds legit could be wasting your time.

7800··on 10 Years of Open-Source Visualization: Did I learn anything from D3.js?
Which other libraries has NYT used, or do they have something custom?

I’m impressed also with what I’ve seen, but I don’t know what they do.

7800··on Woman who received $9,300 electric bill sues wholesale electric provider
When you sign up for a variable rate loan and default, you should not sue.

The provider in question was providing a service at a variable rate. It had to have been clearly part of the terms.

Who to blame are the regulators. Variable rate loans shouldn’t be allowed and neither should this variable rate wholesale crap.

But suing someone over a bill in a class-action suit? Do you think the consumers will all get refunded fully? The law firm will get that money.

7800··on Woman who received $9,300 electric bill sues wholesale electric provider
This is a good example of overlitigiousness.
7800··on Git is my buddy: Effective Git as a solo developer
I love this title.
7800··on Total Cookie Protection
I know that you didn’t mean to completely throw the conversation from Firefox to Expounder, but you succeeded.

Mozilla who? That’s where we are now.

MRR vs net and debt. Why?
7800··on Total Cookie Protection
That’s wonderful!

Now, if Mozilla would allow Firefox to be configured such that it doesn’t call home or update itself in any way, that would be nice also, as I don’t see why Mozilla needs to know about me either.

7800··on We haven’t seen a quarter of known bee species since the 1990s
In the US there is no academy, to my knowledge. It’s another word for school.
7800··on We haven’t seen a quarter of known bee species since the 1990s
That’s not the point of higher education.

Their jobs are to instruct. As part of that these other roles developed and became expected.

However, like healthcare, privatization got to a point where the money made a difference more than the research and other roles. This is not a failure of capitalism, business, or anything of that sort; it was just a problem of taking things that were considered important out of the equation, because they were not understood or justified; and we’re allowed to scratch our heads over this and wonder why, but it’s simply that it happened; things sometimes fail.

Should we guard against this?

Probably, yes.

Could it be crowdsourced?

Probably, yes.
