6t6t6t6··on HTTP/2 is not the future, it’s the present
> You have to patch rails

That sounds like a bad idea in the long term... ;)

6t6t6t6··on HTTP/2 is not the future, it’s the present
I'd like to see a web framework that implements well HTTP2.

AFAIK, the Assets Pipeline in Rails is not designed for HTTP2 and I think that there are no immediate plans to implement it.

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: What are pros and cons of PostgreSQL and MySQL?
It could be interesting to ask them what are they basing their opinion on and if they can enumerate all the advantages of one database over the other.

> use MariaDB instead. It's a fork that fixed some of the issues.

Which ones exactly? ;)

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: What are pros and cons of PostgreSQL and MySQL?
> when MySQL didn't have transactions, it was the fastest "database" for writes!

`/dev/null` is the fastest "database" for writes ;)

6t6t6t6··on Why do developers who could work anywhere flock to the most expensive cities?
This situation is not uncommon. [Reunion Island][0] is a French province, but it is not in Schengen neither. Any European can go to live and work to Reunion Island, but a foreigner with a Schengen Permit cannot.

6t6t6t6··on Surviving the New MacBook Pro
Same here. MBP 13" with 16GB of RAM. Fast enough to develop web apps with Rails and JS. It's light and the battery life allows me to go to any meeting without having to bring the charger.

USB-C doesn't bother me, and I guess that in the near future it will be the standard. I just had to buy a new Ethernet adaptor.

I agree that the touchbar is annoying. I summon Siri way too often, but it's not the end of the world. The keyboard is good.

I just think that it is a bit too expensive for what it is, but I didn't pay for it.

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: How do you set prices?
> it gets in the hands of more people, so there's a higher potential for word-of-mouth advertising

Also, those are customers that will not buy your competitors' product.

6t6t6t6··on Airbnb raises $1B at $31B valuation, became profitable in 2016
> and get more people to review honestly

This. Something I hate is when people think that 5 stars have to be given "by default". For me, an uneventful stay in a clean place should mean 3 stars. If the place is specially nice or the owner was really kind, 4 stars. And 5 stars should only be for my _favourite_ places.

I stopped doing airbnb when, for several times, I booked 4.5 star places and they turned out to be honestly crappy.

6t6t6t6··on Aheui: Esoteric programming language designed for Hangul
> "buttonClick" may, depending on who you ask, become one of these: "clickEnBotón", "clickEnBoton", "clickBoton", "botonClick"...

Technically, `clic` is a noun in Spanish, not a verb, so, if you are talking about an action, the correct name for the variable would be `hacerClickEnBotón`.

At the same time, although more verbose, it would be interesting to see how a language in Spanish would work, once sensible conventions are set.

As a person who loves thinking about names, in your filter example I see that, just by changing one letter, one can be more precise in the exact meaning of the variable or method name.

Anyway, I am not saying that people should use Spanish when programming. Having English as the common language for our profession is a great advantage.

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
Nubuck is not a really well designed material. It's difficult to clean and maintain, and you can ruin your shoes in a rainy day.

But yes, Camper shoes are great. They even come with 2 years warranty and have a good customer service.

6t6t6t6··on Let’s not demonize driving, just stop subsidizing it
I live in Tokyo and I don't own a car. I take a 20 minutes train ride to commute to work and I do the groceries in the shops around my train station. I use online shopping as well and I receive my purchase the next day or two days after. To move around my neighbourhood I use a bicycle (if I was older I would have an electric one).

The weekend I want to go out of the city, I just go to the rent a car next to my house and I rent a hybrid car during 48 hours for about $150. If the place I want to go is really far, I take the bullet train and I rent a cheaper car there.

It's perfectly ok to live without car, it's just that the cities need to be designed in a different way.

6t6t6t6··on I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again
With a laptop, this seems trivial: just create a second user in the system with some data (so it does not look empty). Then create a login script that deletes the data of you primary user and deletes itself. Nobody would ever realize what happened (except with forensic tools).
6t6t6t6··on I’ll never bring my phone on an international flight again
Most of the information on Android phones is stored on the Cloud. Someone can factory reset their phone before crossing the border, create a new empty profile* just to show it to customs and, once they are in a "safe zone", factory-reset it again and load the good profile that will automatically download the user data and apps.

* Just to make the customs agents happy, I would fill the history of the fake profile with porn and pictures of donuts.

6t6t6t6··on New Macbook Pro power efficiency and time remaining
I really do care about weight and dimensions. Before I used to buy the typical 3.5Kg laptops. When you carry an Acer around, you can feel the weight in your backpack, even when you walk around the office to go to a meeting. I switched to a MBA and I feel it like if it was a paper notebook. It is a huge difference. A perfect laptop for me would have the weight an dimensions of a MBA with almost the power of a MBP.

As for battery life, I need enough battery to be able to go to meetings without having to take the charger with me. It's not usual for me to work 8 hours without having a charger near to me. Also, as far as I know, the new Macs with USB-C, can be charged from an external battery pack.

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: Why don't developers unionize?
The fact that the law says that something is forbidden, it does not mean that all the companies comply, having something on your side helps you a lot when you fight the company to make them follow the law. Also, my examples are quite clear, but there are always grays.
6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: Why don't developers unionize?
At this moment developers have an unusual power that comes because of the scarcity of good developers. This does not happen in many other professions and will, for sure, not last forever for the programmers. The day you won't be able to just walk to the next company, you will miss to have the power to negotiate with your employer and not just obey him or run away.

Do you remember 2004?

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: Why don't developers unionize?
- "Hi, we decided to change the terms of your contract and you have to sign this document right now... or else."

- "Sorry, I need to talk with he Union first to see what my options."

- "Hi, we decided that you need to come to work all the weekends in March and we still have to decide if we will pay for the overtime and how much".

- "Mmm... Well, let me ask the Union, but I think that this is not going to happen... I actually had lots of plans for the weekends in March."

- "Hi, you are fired. Not because you are a bad professional but because you ask too many questions and because you don't show yourself submissive in front of me".

- "Mmm... I am afraid that you will need to have a long conversation with the lawyers of the Union first".

That's what Unions are for in many countries.

6t6t6t6··on Buffalo – MVC Web Framework for Go
When programming, you usually have three options:

- Use a framework that someone else did. You will have to spend time learning the abstractions of the framework.

- Spend time building your own framework, creating your own abstractions.

- Create a massive amount of spaghetti that, at some point, no one -including you- will want to maintain.

6t6t6t6··on California man fights DUI charge for driving under influence of caffeine
- How can it be possible that someone gets a criminal record for doing something stupid (but not reckless) with a car?

- How can it be possible that when someone calls the police and the police ignore them?

- How can it possible that someone who has problems with the neighbors thinks that the most sensible thing to do is to buy a gun?

- How can it be possible that a discussion in the lawn ends with a dead person?

6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: What do you want to learn in 2017?
Get a Spanish or Latin American boyfriend/girlfriend. It's, by far, the best way to learn languages.
6t6t6t6··on To Slow Global Warming, We Need Nuclear Power (Op-Ed)
For me, reduced consumption is about promoting different habits.

In most of western countries, the society is set in a way that happiness is directly tied to consumption. Marketing and the society in general, makes people feel that the only way to fill their lives is by buying things.

In some other countries, people may be able to achieve similar levels of happiness with lower consumption levels; for instance, by doing things instead of buying things.

6t6t6t6··on Galileo navigation satellite system goes live
Completely agree.

GPS is so essential, that is becoming more and more a "single point of failure" for our civilization.

Without having any data, I have the intuition that the cost of deploying our own GPS system may be worth just as an "insurance".

6t6t6t6··on The State of Babel

6t6t6t6··on The State of Babel
I have the intuition that the plans of the developers of the future version of JS are that you will always have to transpille the code.

https://youtu.be/3pKNRgResq0

On the other hand, I think that the time of CoffeeScript has passed. It made some sense before Babel but now, IMHO, it is only for Ruby developers who don't like the syntax of JavaScript.

6t6t6t6··on Amazon Go
In a regular store, customers are anonymous, so they can be jerks without fear of consequences.

If I understand well, in Amazon Go, every customer has an account linked to a credit card. I guess that this will work as a deterrent. I a customer does something wrong, they can get a warning. Next time, the account is canceled. Problem solved.

6t6t6t6··on Japan issues tsunami warning after magnitude 7.3 earthquake
Or the walls 1m taller, or build it underground, or not build it at all. But it does not make sense to build a nuclear plant saying "yes, well, maybe it will be ok"!
6t6t6t6··on Japan issues tsunami warning after magnitude 7.3 earthquake
A big tsunami like that happens about once every 500 years. It the life of the nuclear plant is 50 years, the risk of a disaster happening was 1/10. I don't think that this was an acceptable risk. Even a risk of 1/100 or 1/1000 would be unacceptable.

That means that the nuclear plant should have never been there, or should have been prepared to be run over by a tsunami...
