6stringmerc··on Grindr CEO Says AI Is Doing the Work of 200 Engineers
Oh, another situation where a CEO makes an assertion that quantity is a more important metric than quality? I suppose the high level humor in this is considering the nature of the app itself. Not part of the target market but still rather side eye concerned this could end poorly for the users if the CEO isn’t very concerned with, em, protection.
6stringmerc··on YC founder asks desperate job seekers to tattoo themselves for an interview
Not going to click on any of the articles to avoid driving traffic to this…conflagration of poor judgment colliding head on with amorality…but there’s a part of me that wonders if the tattoos were all done with the same needle. Bear with me here. This is not a case study in good judgment. Extending the logic is purely academic.
6stringmerc··on Another Reason Not to Use "AI" for Your Writing
> And the reality is that even if you write your novel without any AI assistance, unless you have a hand-typed manuscript - better still, hand-written - you're in danger of being accused of AI becomes someone finds an em-dash, or decides your words are too hard, or your skin is the wrong colour, or for some other completely arbitrary reason.

Other than the obvious red herring pearl clutching about “culture war” targeting you yoked in at the end, what you mention in the opening here is actually A GOOD THING.

I was incarcerated and wrote one musical stage play after reading some Shakespeare comedies via the jail library, then outlined and composed FOUR screenplays. All were written by hand. They are novel, all original, and clearly my own work product and I retain the manuscripts.

Publishers in music and literature and film are all middle men and that I can agree upon. They actually profit more from AI than from he “professional communities” you claim to speak for - a citation, with financial justification, is clearly needed otherwise I believe your assertion is pure speculation. Publishers have a role in quality assurance and marketing and while crap like “Fifty Shades of Gray” are a slap in the face to the profession, there was a market and it got what it demanded.

There is a lot of gatekeeping in the US “business of the arts” and it still is a multi billion dollar industry. I can’t realistically sell my screenplays without an Agent to shop them for me. FOH with the whole “the world has changed and AI is a gift and love it or be left behind” logic chain, it doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.

6stringmerc··on Man seeks millions after being shot by police in game-related swatting incident
While I was incarcerated on a bogus Felony charge, a Corrections Officer made a false report to a neighboring Police Department that I had been “bragging about Swatting people” in that city. Totally false claim. Got a visit from Detectives while in my cell. They recorded the whole thing.

The Thin Blue Line is real. I’ve moved on with my life. Mostly because there’s no way to hold them accountable so why try?

6stringmerc··on The Cold Email
This is why I tend to write real letters using my IBM Selectric III and send them via physical mail. I enjoy writing. Writing with purpose is time well spent. 90% of the time I get no response. I’m not actively trying to find the next recipient, it just comes naturally, so I see no reason to stop.

When is the last time you got an actual typed or hand written letter? That’s my advantage.

6stringmerc··on LLM Honeypot
Because it’s a test that an LLM will fail by trying to obtain the advertised service I suppose.
6stringmerc··on Half-Life ported to Mac OS 9
[R]age Board for the Elites represent!

I still send the di clan video around every few months to the Zoomers I connect with in games.

Halcyon days of HLDM and AG worldwide. RIP Neo. May you sneak around boot_camp in the great beyond with joy.

6stringmerc··on AE Studio recruiting pirates to recover treasure located by AI
As an amateur treasure hunter in the US, briefly, I can easily pass on this because the legal implications are shockingly odious. Some of us do it more for the “love of the game” and the resurrection of historical stories that are interesting. My personal best inquiry was for the Texan outlaw Sam Bass. Dead ended on private property, but pretty sure I know where the missing Union Pacific train robbery gold is buried…
6stringmerc··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When the AI Bubble Bursts
Okay, but what’s your counter argument to Jim Chanos? Oh, that’s right, you don’t have one because he’s a tried and true Wall Street heavy who speaks in plain English. Ed and Jim are on the same page looking at it through different sets of prescription glasses. I hope you have your money where your mouth is, so to speak, because I certainly do (avoiding AI trade) and good luck with the SNAP paperwork in two years.
6stringmerc··on Tile's security is so bad it's a feature for stalkers
Thanks! Have you considered evaluating the “AppClose” platform in a similar fashion? It is used in family / civil cases to my knowledge. Perhaps another worthwhile avenue of study, perhaps not. Thank you for your time.
6stringmerc··on Corporate America Has Suddenly Decided to Stop Blowing Money on AI
Are you making 10x more income for yourself?
6stringmerc··on Corporate America Has Suddenly Decided to Stop Blowing Money on AI
Enron was doing really well with creative accounting too. Non-GAAP numbers are out of control in 2026. The unwinds are going to be stunning eventually. Also, my small portfolio is worth a billion! In Yen, but it’s still an accurate claim.
6stringmerc··on Corporate America Has Suddenly Decided to Stop Blowing Money on AI
Well, you can say that all day long but realistically would your “small startup” even exist if your firm was charged Enterprise rates or the actual compute costs and denied access to capital to subsidize your users? It’s a fair question.

The other, more complex one would be “what benefit” are you talking about? Clearly there are some differences in performance regarding speed and token cost, but industry news indicates not a single one has solved the inherent hallucination problem which makes the reliability akin to an untreated schizophrenic research or coding assistant.

6stringmerc··on Meta's AI models are powering the first wave of Genesis Mission projects
As a former proposal specialist (B2B, B2G, non DoD) I looked into the Genesis Mission procurement site and process.

Unless someone can correct me, the total amount of grant monies is $280,000,000 or so.

It became obvious that it’s not worth my time to engage in the “mission” as they call it, even if I could benefit some worthwhile causes.

That’s a pittance and pretty insulting to the purported benefit of funding scientific endeavors. I’m not even attempting to be political here. $280 Million versus $XX Billion for warfighting is a seriously gross misallocation of public monies, IMHO.

Total lackluster reporting on the scale and scope of the actual numbers, but not surprising.

6stringmerc··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
Thanks for sharing.

I’m currently dealing with Verizon Wireless and their “Jabronibot” claiming I have a fictional account balance due. It has been sent to collections, but still is being asked for by their legacy system.

The case studies of “Agents in Billing Departments” and potential shareholder lawsuits / E&O claims / reputational damage will be interesting to me. I worked in “risk management” products years ago and this kind of liability is not easily dollar traded away via contract. Will accountability stick to the Decision Makers or will they try to surrogate to the Service Providers? Hmm.

6stringmerc··on The End of Creativity
Better lesson: a LOT of people fancy themselves more creative than they are actually are, and rely on TROPES to the point of CLICHE which is shockingly obvious to actual practitioners.

This is why, nearly without fail, a writer’s First Screenplay is trash. Just…bad. The “I’ve watched a lot of movies so I’ve got this” is basically the stage of AI/LLM output, frontier level, in 2026.

That’s why Seth Rogen said every AI script he’s read was “dogshit.” And to be fair, the majority of human written scripts are dogshit too. It’s not that creativity is dead, it’s that we’re seeing the endgame of ego inflation as a cultural consumerism business model and that’s a problem not easily solved in the short term.

Please note I’m a 30 year guitarist. I have watched, without fail, thousands of postings on CraigsList for instruments purchased by parents or “music lovers” who finally decided to admit they’ll never be able to rise above below mediocrity, and sometimes they even admit it in the post. Learning to play the way I do now? My fingers bled. I had calloused fingertips I could stick a safety pin through. Guess what? Never made minimum wage because “anybody can play guitar” and club owners are scum 90% of the time. No use arguing with me, IYKYK.

6stringmerc··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
An admirable start down a self-discovery path.

One of the major themes I pick up in this piece is an unfortunate, very common, misallocation of mental effort regarding the past-present-future mindset. As in, the described course is simply regarding treatment of symptoms. There is little to no awareness at this point in the journey that the sources of the mental issues may be much deeper than simply imposter syndrome or poor culture fit.

I am not a Psychologist. I am a Writer. Psychology is the invention of a Writer, facts. To write convincing characters or portraits of events, it takes a long and often painful study of the human psyche. When I finally fell into circumstances where I was able to apply this to myself, the process, after years, has resulted in a fundamental change in my own mind. For the better, though it is occasionally foreign or akin to feeling “adrift” in life - such is clarity.

Point being? Looking outside for help is problematic, and “friends and family” were in my situation the actual causes and “negative feedback loops” which had decades long consequences. Only by turning my back on them was I able to identify the nearly subconscious roots of my guilt and shame issues having no valid reason to exist. To the contrary, I found how my life had been quite a reflection of well formed morals, ethics, and principles of a high minded, pragmatic, and good quality of character person.

That’s why AA and friends and family suck as resources. They are unreliable. One does not repair the mind by continuing to engage with others also of a broken nature. Healing happens in solitude. Being unable or unwilling to take this path is the first thing to address in pursuit of real, lasting positive change.

Or, ya know, just take handfuls of pills and keep rowing your boat in the river of denial. Seems to be the way Mormonism keeps its catastrophically delusional dogma in play. Read the experiences of ex-Fundamentalist cast outs or voluntary abandonment.

One must turn their back on the broken culture that broke them to find the truth and spiritual health within. Good luck to all.

6stringmerc··on YC CEO says he ships 37K LoC AI code per day. A developer looked under the hood
“…without necessarily giving them the judgement or expertise to know whether the outcome is any good.”

Ahem…this man is A CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER how DARE you cast aspersions on his judgment abilities! /s

The biggest takeaway for me is “failing upward” is much easier in the 21st Century.

6stringmerc··on Programmers need to start meditating
“I’m doing five things at once very effectively”

…sure you are buddy, sure you are…

Note to self: book appointment with Optometrist ASAP to correct how far my eyes have rolled back into my head.

6stringmerc··on Tell HN: OpenAI has started putting ads on paid programs
What are these “adds” you are seeing? Are they “ads” as in the contraction slang form of “advertisements” akin to the British “adverts” or are you making a meta commentary on the “addition” of content to you Clanker experience?

I’m not genuinely confused tbh. I’m more nothing this as a case study of the “LLM user profile” anecdata I’m collecting. Some may call it lowbrow to harp on failing basic literacy yet being compelled to pay real money for a chatbox to help with mental efforts, but here we are.

6stringmerc··on Reid Hoffman says SpaceX 'not an AI company', xAI 'complete train wreck'
Fantastic insight! I take his opinion as having the most merit possible in this context. Why?

Because LinkedIn is also a train wreck and game recognizes game.

6stringmerc··on AIPropel, AI-powered proposal generation for freelancers and agencies
I’ve worked with proposals in the past - they’re legally binding when you submit with a price attached. Lawsuits waiting to happen to any company foolish enough to entrust the process to AI. The manual review and corrections will take longer than actually doing the work with a human. Source: used frontier RFP response systems and they were just databases with some find/replace tools.
6stringmerc··on Show HN: Are You in the Weights?
Fascinating! I’d like to learn more about how to interpret the results to be honest, the About is awesome and helpful.

I scored 1,100 total on my music moniker. It has been used in SoundCloud and also via streaming services/releases via DistroKid. Represented in all the models but of course not disproportionally large fame so to speak. It’s just a very unique setup, somewhat designed to stand out.

My writing account, newer within the past few years, is just under 1,000. The Kimi and DeepSeek pick that up a lot more. I wonder if they train on Medium more than the others…

Thanks for sharing!

6stringmerc··on The UK's Teen Social Media Ban Is Political Theater, Not Child Safety Policy
Kids, like all humans, are subject to an uncomfortable reality that is dismissed far too often in discussions about leadership and regulations:

49% of all people are less intelligent than the average person.

6stringmerc··on Google Flight Simulator
So much for hiring “smart creatives” and supporting their work I guess…source: Introduction section of 2014’s “How Google Works” (I returned it to the library after that, I’m not going to hate-read stuff even if it would give me some insight into Eric Schmidt’s career)
6stringmerc··on Why Is Claude Turning into an a**Hole?
Your example is very helpful!

I interpret the case you mention as a necessary though jarring rebalancing - to the opposite pole - of the sycophantic prior implementations which would, in paraphrasing here, praise the user with framing like “Wow this is a fascinating comparison and you’re on to something that can change the world!” which has been documented (I’m not citing sources at this time, my bad I know).

The post definitely reads to me like the diary entry of a jilted friendship where for some reason the counter party got tired of being encouraging to everything and is, well, kind of not interested in hiding that anymore. YMMV.

6stringmerc··on The $15,000 AI Bill. Your $20 Subscription is a DELUSION [video]
Okay then provide a link to a Dropbox PDF or official documentation “demonstrating” the premise is “untrue” please. Or admit you’re blinded by faith. Or financially interested in the public believing in a hypothetical like your second sentence.

In short, citation needed or shens bruh.

6stringmerc··on Why AI hasn't replaced software engineers, and won't
“When we did this analysis…”

Nah, kids, this is an opinion column. If you can’t tell the difference, then you don’t get to sit at the adults table. I’ve been an opinion writer for most of my life, and dressing up my perspectives in scientific LARP is bullshit. And yes, I do have underlying suspicions why certain cultures feel entitled to get away with taking such a tone in their declarations. This has been formed over decades of observation and I won’t claim it is scientific…unlike these two fellas who enjoy foods I do not.

6stringmerc··on We Think the SpaceX IPO Is Overvalued
This is the most white collar “we call bullshit” type of writing I’ve seen in a long time and I’m here for it. Not a good sign for the next two AI IPOs either. SpaceX had the hubris to release their S-1 publicly and whatnot. This is going to be “Hot Garbage Summer” in the equities market lmao. GG VCs.
6stringmerc··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
Uh, are you sure about that claim regarding surveillance over human history? Just because the technology has advanced does not entail the methods or concepts are novel. Quite the contrary in my view: the modern versions are natural evolutions of long traditions and customs. Having “rats” and “moles” reporting on behavior is, I mean, it predates written records of I’m not mistaken.
