5cott0··on Who Got It Right: Orwell or Huxley?
Yeah, We is actually pretty bad.
5cott0··on Who Got It Right: Orwell or Huxley?
It's almost the exact same plot as 1984 in a different sci-fi setting. But yeah sure, pedantically speaking it's not exactly plagiarism but it's not exactly original either.
5cott0··on Who Got It Right: Orwell or Huxley?
Neither because they both plagiarized Yevgeny Zamyatin.

5cott0··on I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months
I got an email from an Amazon recruiter the other day. I thought it was an invite to a phone screen but it was actually a link to my dev plan.
5cott0··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
Been a fan since V1 and to this day all I ever use are @apply and utility classes.
5cott0··on Ask HN: Best self-starter resources to learn web design?
Focus on developing a solid workflow in a single design tool first. Just follow beginner video tutorials, especially playlists. As you develop a workflow, and make lots of mistakes, you will naturally pick up bits and pieces of UI/UX patterns and trends and learn the right questions to ask.

5cott0··on Ask HN: What advice would you give about feeling stuck and helpless in a job
Appears to me that you've already answered your own question and my advice to you is that you should trust your instincts.
5cott0··on I could do that in a weekend (2016)
I could do that in a weekend.

5cott0··on Why don't tech companies pay their engineers to stay?
Because the millenial MBAs that have taken over tech believe that software engineers are a commodity and not an asset.
5cott0··on Undetectable quantum computation and communication for alien civilizations

5cott0··on Jet Li rejected The Matrix as he didn’t want his kung fu moves recorded (2018)
the matrix and fist of legend were both choreographed by the legendary Yuen Wo Ping. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuen_Woo-ping
5cott0··on Jet Li rejected The Matrix as he didn’t want his kung fu moves recorded (2018)
Li also turned down the role of Li Mu Bai in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon which is arguably more of a loss to cinema but that was to support his wife during pregnancy.
5cott0··on Ask HN: Recruiters want people who do side projects, yet contracts forbid them?
I'm a bit incredulous whenever I see the claim that HMs are looking for extensive side-projects because I have quite a few on my github and resume I don't think anyone interviewing me has even looked at them or at least no one has ever asked me anything substantive about any of my projects during an interview. The one exception is the startup that I worked on full-time for a period. I think most HM's look at extensive side-projects as a red flag that you are flighty and unreliable and will be hacking on weekend toys instead of working. Ultimately I think people are just lazy and don't care most of the time.

edit: regarding IP assignment agreements - in CA these are unenforceable for anything invented on your own time and equipment, companies still make you sign them because they do need the IP assignment for the stuff you produce on their time which is fine.

5cott0··on Disproportionate amount of bad online behaviour stems from psychological issues
My meaning was along the lines of family dynamics. Teenager starts acting out at school not because they're a bad kid but because their is some unhealthy dynamic in the school or home environment. The kid's behavior is just a symptom of something unacknowledged and in that case the kid is the healthy one bringing attention to the problem. Pain is your body telling you something needs attention.

Mild trolling and shitposting is mostly harmless and perhaps an appropriate response to being very online and maybe a measure of the health of an online community.

One of the big problems though is that trolling and shitposting can easily be weaponized into coordinated harassment on ideological grounds (gamergate, cancelling, etc) which can be construed as a symptom of the current culture war and perhaps social media companies should pay more attention to the problem.

5cott0··on Disproportionate amount of bad online behaviour stems from psychological issues
What if the people acting out are actually the healthy ones?

5cott0··on I want to learn D3. I don’t want to learn Observable. Is that ok?
The learning curve for d3 is so steep that people are starting to confuse it for observablehq.
5cott0··on Peloton recalling all treadmills after reports of injuries, one death

5cott0··on Ask HN: People who enjoy coding in free time, what does your process look like?
I always have a project goal in mind and keep a backlog of personal project ideas and work on whatever I feel like leveling up on. Having a shippable goal helps because it gives some purpose to the occasional tedium slog which are unfortunately unavoidable. One important thing is that I aim for small scope MVPs that can be launched fairly quickly on the app store or web and if something gets traction or I feel compelled to do so I can keep working on it. Or not if I don't and take what I learned and start the next one. It's a fun hobby, feels like building those little model ships in bottles.
5cott0··on Ask HN: What are the three most expensive tools/services that you use?
Adobe CC
5cott0··on Ask HN: What stack would you use to build a CRUD web app on the JVM today?
Spring/Lombok/Postgres/React - exactly the same as I would have used in 2015.
5cott0··on Ask HN: How do you deal with being a failure?
The key to being a successful failure is persistence, don’t stop now.
5cott0··on Everything Easy is Hard Again (2018)
I know I was being sarcastic because hn discussions around the history of JS always devolve into this silly flamebait and no one should take them seriously.
