57473m3n7Fur7h3··on Switching to Claude Code and VSCode Inside Docker
I have nothing against VSCode but I don’t use it.

For small files and quick edits i use neovim with no customisation at all. Back when I first started using vim I had a pretty long config and some plugins installed and so on. But now that I no longer try to use it as an IDE, neovim is perfect for small edits.

For development work I use JetBrains suite of tools. Very minimal amount of customisation there also, only a couple of extra plugins installed by me and a couple of changes in the settings. It works well enough that I don’t have any desire to spend time customising it a whole bunch.

And between that and the rap group there’s this important movie:

Shaolin and Wu Tang (1983)

> The film is about the rivalry between the Shaolin (East Asian Mahayana) and Wu-Tang (Taoist Religion) martial arts schools. […]

> East Coast hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan has cited the film as an early inspiration. The film is one of Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA's favorite films of all time. Founders RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard first saw the film in 1992 in a grindhouse cinema on Manhattan's 42nd Street and would found the group shortly after with GZA. The group would release its debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), featuring samples from the film's English dub; the album's namesake is an amalgamation of Enter the Dragon (1973), Shaolin and Wu Tang, and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978).

There are many banks that offer virtual cards. Meaning you can generate unique numbers and individually disable those card numbers.

A related thing is, with Revolut you have disposable cards that are only possible to charge a single time. Unfortunately I have had a bad time trying to use disposable cards. One time I tried it the merchant did a single reversible charge for like a dollar to verify the card and then they couldn’t charge the actual amount so the purchase failed. Another time for a subscription service (I wanted to try their free 30 day trial without forgetting to cancel in time) they apparently got metadata telling them the card was disposable and they refused it so I had to use the non-disposable card number after all.

The built-in RSS reader in Firefox was removed. (But extensions exist to add RSS reader to Firefox.)

Google killed Google Reader. (Other products exist you can use instead.)

Facebook removed support for RSS feeds. (You can replace it with third party tools or API calls.)

It’s not dead dead, but it did seem to lose some momentum and support over time on several fronts.

I don’t think that’s gonna happen. I think they will manage to get themselves out of trouble for it, while the rest of us will still face serious problems if we are caught torrenting even one singular little book.

It’s a bit confusing sometimes with macros that create types that don’t seem to exist. But usually when I work with code I use an IDE anyway and “go to definition” will bring me to where it’s defined, even when it’s via a macro.

Still generally prefer the plain non-macro declarations for structs and enums though because I can easily read them at a glance, unlike when “go to definition” brings me to some macro thing.

Since the project consists of multiple SQL files already, a workaround might be to split out all the “comment on” statements from each file into new files following them.

So in file 02-… you have your “create schema”, “create view” and so on. And then in file 03-… you have only the “comment on” statements that go with the things from file 02. And then file 04-… contains “create schema” and “create view” and so on, and file 05-… has the “comment on” statements for file 04-….

And in addition you could then add dash dash comments in 02 and 04 referring to files 03 and 05. And in file 03 and 05 at the top mention that these are valid SQL for PostgreSQL and that GitHub has trouble rendering them properly.

It’s a bit messy of course, but that’s why I say it’s a possible workaround rather than a great solution. Could be worth considering and trying, anyway.

Had to read this five times before I realized that it was just a poorly placed call to action, and not the quote itself. The quote follows right after, hah.

I’m on mobile, and it was confusing because of that. On desktop it’s a lot more visible that this is not the quote.

Everyone else that visits the site from other places get the actual content and not the testicle. So it’s not just that one image. That only shows up when your referrer is HN.

57473m3n7Fur7h3··on Resurrecting a dead torrent tracker and finding 3M peers
Is it really going to be all that bad?

The BitTorrent clients I’ve used all seemed pretty polite, backing off for like 60s at least for each tracker they can’t connect to.

If you buy one of the dead tracker domains and point it at an IP of someone else, but their services aren’t even listening on the port client wants to connect to (and don’t speak BitTorrent even if the port happened to coincide), I can’t imagine that even with a million BitTorrent clients wanting to connect it would really be all that much of a problem.

57473m3n7Fur7h3··on How Compiler Explorer Works in 2025
For anyone else wanting to listen to the episode, this site worked well for me:

https://podtail.com/en/podcast/two-s-complement/the-future-o...

It does have ads, but they were not too intrusive. Scroll down if there’s an ad on first click and there’s a play button that plays the episode.

For me the ads it showed were only text and images, not audio interrupting ads.

You can also listen to it on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QXo5c7cUKQ

But since it’s audio only, I preferred listening to it via the aforementioned podcast website.

The start of the linked post says:

So I assume either by scraping https://www.ipv4.global/ or from readily prepared downloads of data from them. Haven’t looked around the site to see if there is any prepared data downloads available.

In his defence, that attribute has been available in browsers since March 2017 according to your link [1], whereas the most recent commit in the repo for the dithering tool was in March 2016 by the looks of it.

He’s still active on GitHub though, in other repos. Maybe he will accept a pull request? :)

57473m3n7Fur7h3··on A masochist's guide to web development
In GTA III for example, which I have played a lot, it is definitely the case that it spawns a lot more of the players car, whatever model of car the player happens to be in.

Various sources online say that it’s because only a certain number of cars fit in memory at the same time so they use the car of the player along with some others. It makes sense, but it would be cool to get that confirmed from someone who actually worked on the GTA games/engine.
