55acdda48ab5··on Test Anything Protocol specification (2006)
I would imagine the CPAN Testers stuff is adaptable enough.

55acdda48ab5··on Laid-Off Americans, Required to Zip Lips on Way Out, Grow Bolder
> it can open the door to the immigration process via company sponsorship

That's wrong and it's wrong that it worked for you. You should leave.

55acdda48ab5··on Laid-Off Americans, Required to Zip Lips on Way Out, Grow Bolder
The workers are wrong, then. That is not the purpose of the H1B. Anyone who thinks it should lead to a green card should be barred from getting the visa.
55acdda48ab5··on Laid-Off Americans, Required to Zip Lips on Way Out, Grow Bolder
That's an absurd comparison. The visa holder is not bonded and can return home at any time.

The work visa system is obviously broken. Forcing employers to put a dollar value on these supposedly necessary visas goes pretty far to fixing all the problems.

55acdda48ab5··on Laid-Off Americans, Required to Zip Lips on Way Out, Grow Bolder
That's a horrible idea. The whole point of the visa is to service a specific job that was impossible to fill. It makes perfect sense that an H1-b holder should be forced to stay at only one job and not be allowed to compete on the wider job market.

The solution to the abuse of the visa is to get rid of all the legal and bureaucratic tests and hoops and auction off the slots instead. The firm with the winning bid gets to import a foreigner.

If this is really about filling important roles where it's impossible to hire or train an American, the winning bids should be in the hundreds of thousands. If it's really just a system of wage suppression, well the bids will be low, for all to see.

55acdda48ab5··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
> I'll introduce tariffs on goods produced using your robots.

My robot submarines will run your coast guard surveillance and deliver goods tariff free.

55acdda48ab5··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
You probably have a warped view of a lot of these countries. A big part of Harare is a much nicer version of Beverly Hills, it just costs less than a tenth for that lifestyle.
55acdda48ab5··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
What you describe is how big pieces of the mining and oil industry work already. It's not as daunting as you think to move things around and buy security in the poorer parts of the world.

Getting smart people to come on contract to live in luxury and service your robots won't be hard. Why on earth would you live in a dingy NYC or San Francisco apartment if you could go somewhere and as merely an engineer be waited on hand and foot in a luxury condo while saving up bank. Go golfing after work every day for free.

55acdda48ab5··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
If you don't need much of a workforce the main thing is to avoid taxes and regulation. These "guaranteed income" people want to steal your profits. The robot factories will be in Somalia or similar. Pay off the local lords at a reasonable rate, rather than deal with the EU or American federal government.

Energy costs also become increasingly relevant as labor costs drop to a smaller fraction. Why not set up in iceland where geothermal electricity is free.

55acdda48ab5··on Amazon will reportedly soon sell its own private-label groceries
Your comment here breaks two points in the HN guidelines.

You don't like me. Ban the account. Don't pretend this about fairness and rules. The "flag" shadow deletion trick is skeezy as hell. This whole thing is a system for weak passive agressive nerds.

55acdda48ab5··on How America’s back-to-the-land movement gave rise to the geodesic dome home
Making livable structures is not hard, geodesic or not. The problem is bums and druggies and petty crooks, as the article details. Figure out a way to banish them and we can live cheaply and peacefully.
55acdda48ab5··on Amazon will reportedly soon sell its own private-label groceries
Me too. Devoted customer. Short position.
55acdda48ab5··on Amazon will reportedly soon sell its own private-label groceries
Yeah, yeah, it was an ill considered link and too short a post. I've had three drinks. Shoot me. I stand by it.

I don't care to re-summarize the important stuff. I dunno maybe this link is better:

http://investmentwatchblog.com/dave-kranzler-amazon-com-a-gi...

I'm quite sure that AMZN stinks and is a tasty short. If you're net long via index funds or whatever it's a very smart hedge that will probably score you a new car even if the wider market doesn't blow up.

55acdda48ab5··on Amazon will reportedly soon sell its own private-label groceries
I am not Mr. Kranzler. I just read his work.
55acdda48ab5··on Amazon will reportedly soon sell its own private-label groceries
Fanbois are downvoting me but this headline illustrates how Amazon operates. They pump the PR and press cycle to get a pop and work it for all it's worth for cash extraction to insiders. Their accounting practices are enron level egregious. This is going to blow up at some point.

* Though I must add apology that this is a rather low information post with a low quality link. Mr. Kranzler details elsewhere in his feed the extent to which Amazon abuses GAAP.

55acdda48ab5··on Pittsburgh as a Startup
Philly and Baltimore (and Maryland) also have ridiculous taxes. City wage taxes and business revenue (not profit) tax, and relatively high state taxes. You would have to be insane to locate your new business in the city of Philadelphia, for example. The Delaware Valley region is fine, but not the city.

Most of the old northern industrial states and cities are so riddled with taxes and regulations and union corruption it's hard sell to start up a business there. You'd be better off carpet-bagging to business friendly locales.

People are moving in large numbers to Florida and Nevada for sound reasons.

55acdda48ab5··on Whoever does not understand Lisp is doomed to reinvent it (2007)
Talking about lisp in 2016 is mostly just debating static vs. latent/dynamic typing. The lisp guys were talking up their advantages in the 80s/90s era of fortran and C and really bad c++, and I guess the really shitty original JVM. It's a discussion from a dead age.

latent/dynamic typing and also macros work very poorly when the codebase is large and there are many people involved, or when we're talking about decade plus code-base lifespans. It's that simple. If you're one or three noticeably smart dudes building a system from start to ultimate finish (financial exit in four years?), why not go with LISP or something like it. If you're a team of one or two I advise you do go with lisp or perl or python or erlang or whatever.

But that's not the systems anybody builds or maintains much anymore. We make things that a rotating cast of 100 might touch over 30 years. We need static typing.

55acdda48ab5··on Why Suburbia Sucks
> where my kids have access to safe streets, parks, and decent schools

This all used to be easily achievable in urban neighborhoods. The elephant in the room people don't want to acknowledge is that suburbia has mostly been a way to flee from and exclude social decay. This is why people freak out about public transit to a lot of neighborhoods. The requirement of multiple car ownership in an area is a deliberately constructed mechanism for excluding lower socio-economic people.

If you shut down the public school systems and made all schools private with total freedom to deny any student entry, and you empowered a very aggressive police force (lots of stop and frisk, aggressively enforced vagrancy laws), then you'd see far more urban gentrification.

55acdda48ab5··on AirBnbWhileBlack Highlights Discrimination Faced by Black Travelers
The following is a totally reasonable point that some SJW on this site deleted. I would like to know exactly on what grounds.

----

The one piece of actual research in this is about discrimination against "black sounding" names. In one quoted tweet the guy mentions having to use his middle name.

Has it occurred to anyone that the main issue here might be people with deliberately weird names, and not race per se?

If you are named Rainbow, Adolf, Cletus, or LaQuan, I'm going to conclude (from experience) your mother and you are both probably crazy.

55acdda48ab5··on Why Wind Turbines Have Three Blades
You have a computer with servos and winches fly parafoil kites to generate power from wind. This is definitely the theoretically optimal answer. It's also very low capital intensity.

55acdda48ab5··on RIP Kuro5hin
That's some cute back tracking.
55acdda48ab5··on RIP Kuro5hin
Your need to pipe in further solidifies my point. It's the totalitarian nature of the left. No dissent from the party line can be brooked.

I am not a christian. I'd be fine with the koran or the bhagavad gita as a corpus. But internet lefties like you two lose your shit and ruin any discussion over mention of the bible.

55acdda48ab5··on RIP Kuro5hin
> I can totally see why placing "the Bible" and "interview question" in the same sentence would attract attention. My internal HR-department DEFCON meter just went up about two points just thinking about it

You are the problem and you don't even realize it. You don't realize how crazy you are.

55acdda48ab5··on RIP Kuro5hin
I'm not talking about /all. I'm talking about how, for example, on the C++ subreddit some lefties lost their shit and ruined a bunch of discussions because some guy innocently mentioned as an aside using the King James Bible as a text corpus for algorithm testing and interview questions. Only a crazy person would care that this guy mentioned using the KJB, but apparently a fifth of the people there are crazy. Which is weird because a lot of the specific crazies are otherwise very smart and interesting people. But they just couldn't let it slide. This is the totalitarian nature of the left.
55acdda48ab5··on RIP Kuro5hin
You actually can't. Lefty types show up in pretty much all the otherwise good topical sub-reddits and signal and get their upvotes. There will be some utterly irrelevant aside with Trump bashing, or whatever, on thread about single cylinder engines. There are some guys upthread here arguably doing it, for example.

Ask the lefty signaler to shut up and stay on topic and you get downvoted or even deleted.

Reddit is dominated by entry-ist lefties to the point it's too annoying to read.

55acdda48ab5··on The A-10 Warthog May Be Kept Out of Retirement by Law
> "stop doing COIN in poor countries" is a political solution that requires a top-down policy change

Yeah? That was my whole point. You make it sound like it's crazy. It's the most sensible course.

55acdda48ab5··on The A-10 Warthog May Be Kept Out of Retirement by Law
> the A-10 fleet as ground-piloted drones.

This is just a super expensive and failure prone way to do what 100 year old artillery technology does.

Site the enemy, call in artillery fire.

Drone techno fetishism is a big problem right now. Most of this stuff does not work nearly as well as people are pretending it does.

55acdda48ab5··on The A-10 Warthog May Be Kept Out of Retirement by Law
The problem is that the CAS mission the A-10 performs is effectively impossible against any modern enemy with modern missile systems and manpads. The A-10 is for shooting up poor brown people we're messing with for no particular reason, not for fighting a real war.

The solution here is to get rid of the A-10 and simply not do "nation building" and counter-insurgency in poor countries. We don't need the A-10 because it's useless for any war worth fighting in today's world.

55acdda48ab5··on Research into the reasons for procrastination and how to stop
I procrastinate a lot and will never stop because in so many cases it makes perfect sense and works out well. I can't tell you how many times it turned out I didn't even need to do something I was procrastinating on, or a far easier way to proceed came up.

It's so easy to wind up with an infinite list of chores. Continually pushing a lot of them off as late as possible works rather well, in my experience.

55acdda48ab5··on DC faces Silicon Valley's riches and ever-growing power
Another question that's coming up more and more is whether companies like Facebook and Twitter need to be regulated by the FCC as broadcasters or telecoms. Facebook and Twitter have been blatantly influencing feeds and content for political ends and at some point people are probably going to decide they shouldn't be allowed to do that.
