Thanks for taking the time to write this, lots to think about here. I actually had the chance to talk to Mark Cuban after the GMA thing, and he had similar comments about changing habits/behavior. Even if Newbee is as useful as I think it could be, I'm starting to think I'll need a trojan horse to make it appropriately appealing to the people who could get the most out of it. "This will help you" isn't enough, it seems.

I would really like this!
54mf··on My Kickstarter is going to end in failure today. What went wrong?
Very interesting. Perhaps I could have framed this campaign better, less about the app itself and more about the underlying service?
54mf··on My Kickstarter is going to end in failure today. What went wrong?
A valid point! I like to think that my bullshit detector is tuned well enough to tell the difference between "hey that's cool good for you" and "I am legitimately on board with this idea", and the positive feedback I've been hearing seems sincere. FWIW, I've also gone out of my way to request any—any—negative feedback. I would love to have the nits picked out of the project and product, but no one seems to have any substantial complaints thus far.
54mf··on My Kickstarter is going to end in failure today. What went wrong?
Great question! Because the app isn't done yet, which is why I'm running the Kickstarter in the first place. ;) The funding I'm looking to raise ($10k) is to finish and ship it, and I have a few plans for revenue generation if/when that happens.
54mf··on An open competition to build a smaller power inverter, with a $1M prize
I'm just tickled by how many commenters have a totally obvious solution to this problem. Surely, the hundreds (thousands?) of experts at Google, the IEEE, and the ~8 manufacturers who put this contest together are just fools who couldn't come up with such amazing, brilliant ideas themselves.

Congrats in advance, and enjoy your million bucks!

54mf··on Why SSD Drives Destroy Court Evidence, and What Can Be Done About It (2012)
Solid State Disk Drives. :)
54mf··on Show HN: Fiddlewax
As an avid iPad music hobbyist, this is really cool. Reminds me a bit of Polychord (http://polychordapp.com/), but Polychord's UI is a bit awkward and the app is incredibly crash-prone. Looks like Fiddlewax has significantly more to offer in regards to melody exploration, which is exactly what I'm looking for. Bought and downloaded.

As if you haven't heard this enough already, throw my vote for MIDI support on the pile. I use iPad synths like Animoog and Sunrizer for writing songs, and being able to combine Fiddlewax's tools with Animoog's sound would be glorious.

54mf··on Hiring Engineers, a Process
The real TL;DR: "I have no patience for jumping through your hiring hoops. Now, here's a list of my hiring hoops you'll need to jump through before I consider working for / hiring you."

I would never, ever hire this guy. With his hubris and self-centered worldview there's no way he'd work well with a team, and with his apparent aversion to writing code under any circumstances other than inside his own delicately-crafted bubble, I'd have serious doubts about his ability to hit a deadline.

Nor would I trust him as a manager. He walks out of an interview (multiple!) because they asked him to code (how dare they), then interviews the guy who responds to (an incredibly ridiculous) code test with a jokey response? Sounds like a great way to make friends, and a terrible way to find job candidates with strong skills.

Even if he was the greatest programmer/manager in the world, unless you're looking for a solo developer who doesn't need to produce within a given timeframe or a manager who values a "cold call with attitude" over a first-class résumé, you're in for a world of hurt.

54mf··on Clef: new iOS and Android apps to kill passwords
This is kind of brilliant. I'm going to give it a shot!
54mf··on Introducing Poke for Mobile
Is there any use-case besides sexting that necessitates:

1. Sending photos that automatically disappear in seconds; 2. Requires user input to view; 3. Prevent screenshots, strong efforts to prevent saving photos?

54mf··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
This is actually kind of a big deal. Have you sent this info to any tech blogs?
54mf··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
And that's assuming every user has 50GB worth of photos - which, for the record, is a lot of photos. Most are probably in the low hundreds-of-MB range, which brings your cost per user down by an order of magnitude, at least.
54mf··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
50GB? Are you sure? That's over 1700 full-resolution RAW images. (Roughly-estimated at 30MB each.)

Even if that is the case, you're welcome! I'm subsidizing your account. :)

54mf··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
"Do you really think your measly $25/year cover for their expenses with you?"

Actually, yes. Hard drive space is incredibly cheap, especially at their scale. My photos aren't terribly popular, so they aren't using much bandwidth either. I probably cost them $5-10/year, tops. In fact, I'm probably one of the majority, the ones who subsidize the heavy, uber-popular users with tens of thousands of followers who upload hundreds of photos a year.

54mf··on The Flat Design Aesthetic
Design has always been about aesthetic preference. While you're absolutely right about the core concepts (typography, color, contrast, etc), I find it amusing that you say that buttons "should" have rounded corners, or that gradients "are fine". Both of those concepts have merit, but are centered around a specific design metaphor (creating virtual objects with real-world qualities; round, "safe" corners for touching) that is by no means required for good UI design.

I'd be happy if we could just all agree and acknowledge that design is fashion and is almost entirely open to personal preference, instead of cyclically praising then destroying our golden calves du jour.

Accusing me of sexism is completely out of line. I attacked the author professionally because I don't think she's right about design. Professionally, I lauded her programming and writing accomplishments in another comment, and I'm sure she's perfectly qualified to write about those topics. I'd gladly learn from them. Personally, I have no idea who the author is. I'm sure she's a wonderful person.

Regardless, I'm done here. I'd be happy to have a civil discussion on the matter, but it's clear you're not capable. Passive-aggressively calling me sexist while hiding behind a throwaway account is trolling, plain and simple, and tolerating you isn't worth my time.

"She ended up with something that didn't look like Bootstrap at the end..."

That's not a good thing.

If you're a designer building an MVP prototype, use Bootstrap as-is or with a pre-made theme. If you're building a real product, hire a designer.

54mf··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
I'm going to sound like a dick for saying this, but I'm okay with it: most people's "creativity" shouldn't be expressed in a public way. Breaking away from Bootstrap and making it "less stereotypical" is probably a bad idea unless you know what you're doing. It's like putting a bejeweled, glittery case on an iPhone; yeah, it's "your creativity", but please don't.

Design is not easy to learn, for anyone, and the article did little to teach design. It offered sources for finding fonts, and finding textures, with little advice about what makes a good or poor font choice, or when and why textures work.
54mf··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
As a mediocre designer, I'm threatened by great designers, not awful ones. Nice shot, though.
54mf··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
The author is a programmer and writer, and I absolutely respect that. All due respect for her accomplishments, but I don't think she should be writing about design.
54mf··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
Actually, no. I meant it. The author is a programmer and writer who has received attention for her work in both areas, and I absolutely respect that. I simply disagree with her offering design advice.
54mf··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
That's why I said perhaps. :)
54mf··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
Mostly, I just find it frustrating that you and the author are presuming that taking Bootstrap and, as self-proclaimed non-designers, "making it not look like Bootstrap" is a good thing. Good design isn't just a thing that happens when you put a cool font on a photo. I'd be less irked if the article was about finding and installing great Bootstrap themes.

Also: 24 Ways' design has, and has had, an excellent design for years and years. The colors are a bit interesting, but the typography and layout is wonderful.

Also also: you're building quite the straw man there. No one said the article was killing anything, illing anything, or making anyone cry.

I definitely wouldn't take the author's design advice, though.

54mf··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
Perhaps I'm being nostalgic, but 24 Ways is sacred to me. It's a yearly list featuring the best-of-the-best sharing insight in to their specific areas of expertise. Christian Heilmann on localStorage (http://24ways.org/2010/html5-local-storage/), for example. This article feels way below the bar; at least, the bar I have set for the site in my own head.
