Jeez that's sad. Thank you for sharing, I appreciate it
4thguy··on When did Google get so weird?
I'll settle for idiots not posting screenshots into comments sections as an answer
4thguy··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
I was an Ubuntu user at the time. From an outsider's perspective Ubuntu Touch thing looked so promising... then everything went sideways
4thguy··on The scourge of x86 emulation
That will open a can of worms. For one thing, Valve will be accused of trying to create a walled garden. Plus there's the whole problem of supporting the back-catalogue as others have said.

Maybe the best that they could to is to offer to distribute recompiled versions of the emulated binaries, similar to how they distribute compiled shaders. But I don't know if that would work, especially legally.

4thguy··on An update on Wayback Machine access
Kudos on that. I don't know what site you're hosting, but I appreciate knowing that it is there
4thguy··on List of references on Sony websites to players "owning" their digital games
No of course not, they merely license it from the government /s (or not /s? this whole thing is confusing)
4thguy··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
Same here. Why do they do it do it this way?

That person clearly doesn't know any people who make art.

Jeez, that takes me back. I could have sworn that it was earlier than 2005 though

Looking up Nightdive Studios is how I discover that Thief: TDP is getting a remaster. Worth it

This explains so much about my experiences
4thguy··on MiniageOS: "Dumbphone" Version of LineageOS
As I read down the readme, I kept saying to myself "ok, that's reasonable," right up until I saw the 300GB free space requirement to build the image. Is that really what is needed to build an image for a phone or is this a one-off?
4thguy··on Quake Shareware, a CD-ROM just a little too full
The most polite error message ever
4thguy··on Quake Shareware, a CD-ROM just a little too full
The video game Uru shipped with the sounds as ogg files. Post installation they were decompressed to wav files, I'm guessing so that they can squeeze some more performance out of the game
4thguy··on HackEurope 2026: A short rant on AI and hackathons
> "Think about it. Think of the most average person you know. 50% are more stupid than them. And you won't get any value out of speaking to those"

That right there is very telling. They don't know the difference between median and average

I want to piggy-back off this: if there must be an electron application, then at least make it available on different platforms
4thguy··on Bubble Memory
I had initially learned about bubble memory from the Logopolis serial of Doctor Who. I actually went and looked it up after watching it because the concept sounded neat

Being able to put epubs bought elsewhere and reading them without needing to convert the files is a huge plus
4thguy··on Kill The Cookie Banner
Sorry, no. Code doesn't magically go from the intern's workstation to live. If the chain of incompetence is that long, then the most generous read is that they don't care
4thguy··on Google loses fight over record $4.7B EU antitrust fine
I'm sorry, but what does "pre-installation deals with smartphone makers" have to do with being open?
4thguy··on Google loses fight over record $4.7B EU antitrust fine
Also, very rich given their very active attempts at nailing the door shut on every version of Android except for Android + Google
4thguy··on Google loses fight over record $4.7B EU antitrust fine
I think you might need to reconsider how open Android actually is given the recent moves.
4thguy··on Font-Family Recommendations
The first few seem like sensible thoughts to me. What if the font doesn't load from the CDN for some reason?

Just add a font fallback.

4thguy··on Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users
The first thing I did when I read the parent comment was to double-check if I mixed-up my German companies.

There's only one reason why they're doing this: it benefits them in some way.

4thguy··on Preparing for KDE Plasma's Last X11-Supported Release
I agree. IMO this is a breaking change. It seems like some (many?) accessibility tools don't work on Wayland, so this breaks users' workflow if they need those tools
4thguy··on Did the Pope use AI to write about the dangers of AI?
Honestly, this link is better than the link in the OP. At least there's substance in it.

I'd like for someone who's fluent in English in Italian to take a crack at comparing the two versions though. There may be more clues there

4thguy··on Taking a walk may lead to more creativity than sitting, study finds (2014)
You should watch some episodes, even if you don't watch all of it. There's a reason why it influenced popular culture (even if no one remembers it doing so).

For example "Remedial Chaos Theory" is where the term "The Darkest Timeline" comes from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remedial_Chaos_Theory

Your observation reminds me of this book, Simulcra and Simulation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulacra_and_Simulation

The very brief (and bastardised) summary is that we're cutting ourselves from what is real, so we base our art on the fake reality that we're experiencing.

I'll never forget when one of my teachers asked: "who has seen a sheep?" The entire class put up their hand. The next question was "who has seen a live sheep, in front of them?" more than half the class put their hand down. We all know what a sheep looks like, but not because we've been near one.
