4636760295··on To Save the Climate, Look to the Oceans
People have been making great arguments for decades, but that hasn't worked. There hasn't been any substantial change. In fact, Trump has been gutting environmental laws, rolling back emissions rules, and castrating agencies like the EPA.

The time has passed to sit idle. Seriously, people need to get mad and start taking real action, because congress is not doing anything about it.

4636760295··on To Save the Climate, Look to the Oceans
That's what the data shows.
4636760295··on To Save the Climate, Look to the Oceans
Yeah, good idea, let's do nothing for another 100 years.

C isn't happening yet, and congress is still about 2/3rd boomers. I don't think A is significant enough to affect retirement accounts, so it's not something boomers are passionate about.
4636760295··on America is giving up on the pandemic?
This is correct. It's not generating the clicks anymore, so they've moved on to other things. The media only cares about whatever gets the most eyeballs.
4636760295··on Manned fighter to face autonomous drone next year
That's what they want you to think. The war machine is a jobs program, but they could just as easily spend the same money on something more useful like infrastructure projects or social programs.
4636760295··on Most tech content is bullshit
Meh, I've worked for more than one of these, and I'd say they are thinly veiled hiring or marketing material.
4636760295··on Manned fighter to face autonomous drone next year
I would be less bothered by it if someone was building something other than killing machines. And I really don't care what flag someone waves, nationalism is dumb.
4636760295··on Data and graphs showing millenials' bad economic odds
I'm also very concerned about climate change. I feel like boomers have robbed young people of their futures.
4636760295··on Data and graphs showing millenials' bad economic odds
That's fair, I am well aware of my luck in this case. I guess I just wish that someone had explained to me the real value of SV lottery tickets when I was younger.

FWIW I grew up poor, and am certainly not wealthy now (I'm still a wage slave), but at least I can afford to buy food and new clothes. Growing up I had to rely on charity.

Yeah, this makes sense. I got it especially bad, since I joined startups that raised a huge amount of money on promises of riches, and then failed after burning through hundreds of millions of dollars. The founders cashed out before the companies imploded, but regular employees were left holding the bag. I have lots of illiquid startup stock that's now worthless, after about 10 years in Silicon Valley.

I do feel like the cards are stacked against everyone who isn't already rich. The system is designed to help keep the rich people rich, and make sure the poor stay poor.

I'm excited about the uprising, because we might finally be seeing a period of time that brings about real change. I'd love to see politicians abolished and replaced with real direct digital democracy. Politicians are a leftover from the colonial era when government representatives were necessary because it wasn't possible to have real democracy.

That's the correct term for what happens when animals get together and create copies of themselves.

The rubberizing thing is similar to the helmet effect with bicycles: injuries tend to increase when people wear helmets while riding bicycles, likely because they're more willing to take risks.

As far as peanuts go, it's out of my area of expertise but as I understand it there's an autoimmune response to the proteins in peanuts, and there's a link to people who don't have exposure to those proteins in their infancy.

I agree with this. My family didn't have money to buy me things, but I found ways to get into computers and programming myself. In the 7th grade I started helping the school computer teacher run the IT systems because the school didn't know how to do it themselves. In exchange for helping the school manage the computers, they let me play on the computers after school and install BSD and Linux on an older machine that became my toy.

Kids need to learn things themselves and walk their own path. Sure you can guide them away from bad things, but there is too much hand holding and coddling of young people these days. One example is lining playgrounds with rubberized material, resulting in an increase in injuries. Another example is keeping kids away from peanuts which causes an increase in peanut allergies.
4636760295··on How we use HashiCorp Nomad
"standing by" until they're not. If their VCs start applying pressure to dump the unprofitable projects and seek more profits, their tune will change in an instant. At the end of the day these are for-profit entities, and the only thing that matters is profit.

The only reason they're pursuing this strategy is because they think they can get a piece of the kubernetes market. If that doesn't pan out, they will dump nomad like a bad habit.

For-profit companies aren't open source charities.

4636760295··on I’m a Developer. I Won’t Teach My Kids to Code, and Neither Should You (2018)
While I have no interest in breeding, if I did have kids I would let them choose their own interests rather than forcing mine onto them.
4636760295··on How we use HashiCorp Nomad
I used to do sales for an enterprise "open source" software product, so I get it, but the truth is as soon as someone stops paying people to keep the project going it will die.
4636760295··on How we use HashiCorp Nomad
That's a fair point, I guess it depends on your use case. The risk, however, is that the powers that be at HashiCorp one day decide to abandon Nomad once they realize it will never be a profit centre for them.

People should check out https://lobste.rs/, it's like HN but with less censorship and less content marketing BS.

Expect the pay to be half or less, but you get better overall benefits, a higher standard of living, in exchange for long winters and a mostly car-based society.
4636760295··on How we use HashiCorp Nomad
The main missing feature is that it's not kubernetes.
4636760295··on How we use HashiCorp Nomad
I worked at a hedge fund that also used nomad. The problem, however, is not how well it scales or whatever, but the fact that all the accompanying deployment info and literature is for kubernetes, and k8s has far more features.

I like the quality of products from HashiCorp, but k8s is far, far, ahead of where nomad is.

What I really want is better integration for Terraform and kubernetes. The current TF k8s support leaves much to be desired, too many things are missing or broken and I find there are several bugs that result in deployment flapping (i.e., constantly re-deploying the same thing when there are no changes).

4636760295··on Why I don’t usually meet startups in person (2019)
*most VCs dreadfully underperform. Even the top performers don't do so well once you factor in fees and everything else.
4636760295··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
I feel strongly that ads are a net-negative to society in their current form. They provide some value (a way for people offering products to reach an audience) but the current implementation doesn't work.

Ads make sense in certain scenarios: for example, if I'm explicitly searching for a product I want. But in most cases it's just noise and it incentivizes the wrong behaviours.

4636760295··on Amazon refuses to sell book on Covid-19 and lockdowns
Whether you agree or not with the content of the book, censorship is pretty much always wrong. If we censored all history about the Nazi's and their ideology, we'd never be able to learn to avoid such atrocities.

If you have 1,000 cops, and 1 of them does something bad while the other 999 take no action, then you have 1,000 bad cops.
