41209··on Ruby Is Still a Diamond
Flutter web is amazing. I have the opportunity to build a side project with it last year, and I just love it. Compared to trying to build web applications with React or Vue, Flutter doesn't have to deal with the baggage of the JavaScript ecosystem.

Here's a server side Dart framework

https://aqueduct.io/

Not sure how mature it is, but if I ever have a need to build another backend server I'll try it. I tend to prefer managed solutions now like Google's Firebase, which integrates so well with Flutter ( obviously because Google has a vested interest in you using their services)

Ruby has some what hostile rules imo.

Such as end and lower casing variables.

Another factor to mention, Python has some specific use cases, like machine learning which I can only effectively learn by using Python. I actually managed to secure a 30k pay raise by learning Python in my spare time.

Anything I can do in Ruby, I can already do in NodeJS. If I ever run across an employer who would offer 30k or 40k more for me to learn Ruby, I would definitely jump at the opportunity.

You have to use the right tool for the job. If you have a very big project, with a requirement for strong types then you should probably use C# or Java.

If I'm in a situation where I need to throw up a rest server as soon as possible, I'm probably using NodeJS. It's dirty but it works ( except when you have the wrong Babel compiler installed and lose 3 days of your life trying to fix it)

>Why is it so hard to perform a relative import

I've lost many hours trying to get relative imports to work. It might be the one thing about Python I absolutely hate.

But Node doesn't do this well either, maybe it's just the nature of dynamically typed languages. The two programming languages I enjoy the most would probably be C# and Dart / Flutter. Having types, like real types is essential when projects scale. However I only get to enjoy these programming languages in my spare time.

Personally I think Dart is everything I could ever want in a language. Being able to use types when I need to, and the freedom to use Dynamics when I just don't feel like creating a new class. If you haven't tried Dart yet it's like Java's younger sibling who's easier to get along with.

Is it just me or are Ruby and Python cousins.

I really really didn't like Ruby when I tried to learn it at work , but Python just clicked. I imagine many Ruby programers migrated to Python.

Then again, Nodejs started to take off when Ruby declined. I strongly suspect this is due to all the "full stack" positions. Hey Billy, you write all that nice js on the front end, now you can write it on the back end too.

41209··on NY lawmakers plan to freeze evictions through 2022
I'm not sure what the end game is here.

The whole situation wasn't handled properly, if I was King I would have allowed landlords to have their property taxes waived during the pandemic.

Expect getting an apartment to be much much more difficult once this is all said and done.

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
That actually looks very nice compared to the parts of America I grew up in.
41209··on Docker Desktop no longer free for large companies
It’s open source, you could probably port it yourself.

I somewhat agree with your viewpoint, but given Windows 10 is generally just Windows 10 , OSX is OSX… But Linux could be anything from Redhat to Alpine to a raspberry pi , I understand why devs wouldn’t support it

41209··on More California companies have already moved out of state than in all of 2020
A better metric would be how many jobs are leaving vs how many are being created.

I do still get calls about full remote positions. Had I a family, I’d likely move to a cheaper state and buy a home

41209··on Stop Waiting for Godot
Thanks!

I'll wait for it to mature a bit , but this seems like a worthy competitor to Unreal/Unity.

Lua support is exciting

41209··on Stop Waiting for Godot
Unity taught me how to program, and even today it's just the easiest way to get something done fast.

For example if I want to build a platformer, with tons of special effects, I can do this in about 2 days with Unity.

The asset store itself is Unity's biggest advantage. Want to make a game about finding Easter eggs in the woods, buy Gaia and you have your forest.

From a technical point of view , Unity is amazing. My one concern is the business seems to want to extract more and more from users. You went from being able to buy Unity to needing to subscribe, and subscribe to a bunch of other auxiliary services.

That said, C# is C# so your skills are easily transferable. I'd love to see another commerical C# driven option.

I'm not a big fan of how Godot tries to support 3 or 4 programing languages. This fractures your userbase and makes finding tutorials much harder. Although I will admit my very first programing language was Unity's JavaScript implementation.

41209··on Mental health impacts of a big tech job
I'd be fairly flexible here.

It doesn't need to be a full 6 months every single year , some years might be a bit longer , etc.

41209··on Mental health impacts of a big tech job
At this point I want to figure out a way to work 6 months out of the year at 75$ an hour or so. Then max out my 401k and take 6 months off( see my other thread , I'd do this in a cheaper country)

My theory is I'd end up paying very little taxes compared to working myself mad trying to hit 200k a year.

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
Great

I was actually thinking Kaohsiung.

How is it for an English speaker ?

I really just want some place quiet and cheap

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
Being in a major American city, I'd argue crime it's under reported here too.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/after-san-francisco-sho...

Of course this is going to depend on the city, but for example when I went to Europe, I felt so at ease compared to living in America.

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
Thanks for your response.

The rat race can wait , I think 6 months focused on game dev will get my game to where I need it to be. And if not, at least I had some fun.

Any big cultural shocks.

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
>Such a question is common from people who are running away from an unhealthy situation unrelated to geography. If so, maybe cut that off prior to and independently of the move, and then probably move anyway.

I have a ton of money saved up and I've never gotten a chance to live in another country.

So why not. Worst come to worse I can always come back and proceed to work another 30 years.

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
I think 1k is a reasonable target for an American though.

I strongly suspect I could get down to 500$ , but I don't want to push it.

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
>Due to the Turkish lira collapsing

That doesn't bold well for stability. Hungry did appear on my list, the rent seems very very low.

Right now I'm trying to see where COVID-19 will be in a few months. If it's still not possible to travel easily, I might need to stay and save for a bit longer.

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
That seems like a very very good idea.

I wouldn't do it unless I had a partner who is already a citizen , but I'll definitely keep this in mind.

How much is rent if I didn't want to deposit that much ?

41209··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
How's safety.

As far as I can tell America is more dangerous than most other places.

41209··on New .NET 6 APIs driven by the developer community
Any word on when Unity will get this.

The New Linq and parallel async apis looks super cool

41209··on RustPython: A Python interpreter written in Rust
What could this mean for speed ?

That's Python's greatest weakness imo.

41209··on Google’s ‘Project Hug’ paid out huge sums to keep game devs in the Play Store
Define hardcore

If I’ve been playing Smash Bros since the 90s and I need to play the latest one , I’m buying a Switch. I consider myself hardcore, I probably play( or make ) games at least 30 hours a week

Of course I have a PC as well. I’m personally looking forward to Metroid and Advance Wars later this year.

41209··on Google’s ‘Project Hug’ paid out huge sums to keep game devs in the Play Store
I consider myself a hardcore gamer, but I'm still buying an OLED Switch later this year.

If anything 'hardcore' gamers are more likely to buy a switch since they'll be deeply invested in certain franchises, vs a causal gamers who would be on IPhone

41209··on Claimed AT&T hack of 70M customer records including SSN, name, address
Everyone should put a lock on their credit.

Also since it takes a few days to remove the lock, you can't impulse buy a car ( or another big ticket item).

At this point the only thing I'll ever need to do a credit check for is a new apartment.

41209··on Roblox faces criticism for 'exploiting' young game developers
Hard disagree.

The absurd vast majority of people will never make any money via Roblox, or any of the major app stores for that matter. I have a few apps on both Google Play and the App Store.

I'm never going to see a dime. If anything I like that Roblox is encouraging kids to learn game development, later on they can always move on to Unity or Godot( I'm not really an Unreal fan since the editor doesn't run well on my computer). Then they can also enjoy making no money on Steam ! It's very very rare for indie game devs to make money !!

41209··on Ask HN: Should it be legal to switch privacy policies after purchase?
> Also, be aware that repairing a purely electrical appliance is fairly simple for most small appliance repair businesses. However smart appliances can be setup to only allow "Authorized" repairs. I've seen this for some electric bikes like Bosch bottom bracket motors where you need specific USB keys to work on or modify them that are VERY expensive.

This is an entirely different issue. Even if it's a dumb tv, the manufacturer will probably not prioritize repairability.

I'm guilty of treating most items as disposable, I assume whenever my $300 TV blows out I'll just need to walk on down to Best Buy and buy a new one.

41209··on Ask HN: Should it be legal to switch privacy policies after purchase?
You can also just not connect it to the internet.
41209··on Japanese gaming arcades are on their last life
I'm so sad I'll never get to experience this. I don't think with covid, arcades will ever be economically viable again. Even with a vaccine it's a high risk low reward activity to have so many people gathered around in such a small space.

However there are tons of arcade bars in the US. Hopefully this will become a thing in Japan
