41209··on Found a program I wrote in 1981 and decided to bring it back to life
Random question, is it just me or is programming significantly easier now with all of our modern tools. Even within my own lifetime, I find newer programming languages such as NodeJS to be infinitely easier than C++.

Although occasionally I'll see some scripting frameworks which actually appear to imitate the older keyword based style.

Thank you for sharing by the way. I hope one day someone can learn from my old code

41209··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
I always feel like laptops have actually started to degrade in the last decade. Maybe it's consumerism, but fairly often I get the idea they just assume after two or three years their products will fail.

I can personally vouch for Acer though, while I haven't purchased one of their laptops recently, when I was younger I had one I just abused the hell out of and it still worked fine.

It's very fun to make your stuff last longer

41209··on Show HN: Resume maker with no sign-up or subscription
On LinkedIn photos really should be removed as well, you're correct about bias. I don't put a photo on LinkedIn, and I don't think anyone should. You do not need to know anything about my physical appearance when I'm applying for jobs. This is in sharp contrast to certain countries where you're supposed to take the most attractive photo you can to send it with your resume. I swear to God some of these resumes look more like personal ads.

LinkedIn is still my go-to resource for job hunting, but I want to vomit a bit when I see people trying to turn it into Facebook. Get your validation somewhere else, and let me have a website where I can look for a job.

41209··on Python GUIs for Humans – Transforms UI into People-Friendly Pythonic Interfaces
Very very neat.

I might use this the next time I need to build out a small personal project. I've taken a rather strong liking to Python recently. So much is built into the standard library compared to NodeJS. Very useful for quick projects/ AWS lambdas where installing dependencies is a pain.

Do you have a good guide on wrapping this in a binary ?

Wouldn't be able to use it in a corporate environment though, the licensing isn't great for that.

41209··on Barcelona gives free annual public transport tickets to former car owners
I can make the same argument about freeways. I can make the same argument about parking. If you have a society where almost everyone has a car you're just pushing that cost somewhere else.
41209··on Barcelona gives free annual public transport tickets to former car owners
In LA the cops generally don't care.

Even if they do, they'll just give the homeless guy a citation which he'll never pay. Don't get me wrong, the cops should definitely still handle crimes on the trains, as well as anyone who's trying to live there.

41209··on Barcelona gives free annual public transport tickets to former car owners
I'm in America.

Cops generally don't care if a homeless person jumps a turnstile.

In my ideal world of course you'd still have tons of cameras and attendants for security. Expensive public transit is horribly regressive.

41209··on Barcelona gives free annual public transport tickets to former car owners
Like homeless people can't jump the turnstiles.

In most cities I've lived homeless people don't pay fares regardless. Considering fare enforcement is very expensive, I imagine making it completely free would be be cheaper. The Utopian in me imagines a struggling working class person saving a significant amount of money. To us, 200 or 400$ a month for public transportation isn't a big deal, but if your only making 2k a month that's a ton of money.

I already pay sky high taxes, I figure the city can pay for public transportation out of that.

41209··on Barcelona gives free annual public transport tickets to former car owners
Any reason to not simply make all public transit free. I'd assume once you factor in reduction in traffic, car accidents, etc. It would more than pay for itself .
41209··on Berlin buys thousands of apartments from corporate landlords
It’s also much easier to avoid scams.

Plenty of individual owners will rent out units they don’t actually own , rent it out while in foreclosure, etc.

That said, always see the unit first. Avoid luxury apartments! Get the cheapest place in the best neighborhood

41209··on Ask HN: I'm a solo founder and a billion dollar company wants to use my SaaS
For one, you should probably have an LLC if you want to be serious about business in the first place. If it's just a hobby, then I guess don't charge money for it. But the moment you're charging people money, you practically need an LLC for so many little reasons. One you want to have separate finances established for the LLC and for yourself.

If I were you I'd go ahead and establish the LLC, and then just see if the client wants to move forward. If they do, there's no shame of hiring a few contractors on to help you get to where you want to get to. If they don't, then you still want an LLC

I have an LLC, and I'm well aware that I'll probably never make a dime on my side project. I just have no interest in commingling my personal and business finances.

Overall I'd definitely go for it

41209··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
Sometimes standing up for what is right is more important.

Considering this company directly interfered with his ability to care for his wife, it makes sense for him to write this.

It’s worth remembering humans are not entirely rational. The most rational thing would be for him to of simply quit when they weren’t treating him right.

I’ve done that a few times. And it’s worked very well for me.

41209··on Ask HN: Anyone else using Flutter Web
Great to hear.

I'm actually working on an consumer facing website with Flutter. I'm sure their is a way to make it look nice, but I'll probably get to that later.

For now it's basically a simple crud application

41209··on Genius Sells to Media Lab for $80M
Thank you, that's a poem I'll need re read from time to time.

How did you find this though, are you a rap fan? Maybe Rap genius could have split itself into two brands ?

Academic genius, and Rap genius

41209··on Genius Sells to Media Lab for $80M
As a rap fan I always felt it was silly for Genius to try and expand beyond it's niche.

The only time I've ever used the site was to look up rap lyrics. It does that extremely well, but would I really trust the Rap Lryic site to explain the Magna Carta?

You have to tell VCs something to get those sweet sweet checks.

41209··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
It's GPL so you can always create your own.

I wouldn't mind feature bounties for a project like this.

41209··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
Agreed.

That alone makes me want to donate.

Can it work as a VST plugin ?

41209··on OpenRA: Red Alert, Command and Conquer, Dune 2000, Rebuilt for the Modern Era
I actually own the remasters, did anyone else notice these games are absurdly hard.

When I come to think about it, I've never been able to beat the original Red alert. The sequels are pretty easy though

41209··on Steam Top 50 Games: Over 70% now work on Linux
I’d attribute this more to the standardization of game engines.

Once you figure you how to get most Unity games working on Linux , you cover most games. Even if you don’t want to export a native binary .

I’m very excited for Steam Deck !

41209··on Court issues permanent injunction in Epic vs. Apple case
Vote with your dollars.

If App A requires you to use their payment gateway and App B uses apple pay, use App B.

I imagine this will cause a sort of race to the bottom where apple will lower its own fees to match.

41209··on Pedalboard: Spotify’s Audio Effects Library for Python
Ahh.

That makes sense.

I definitely do appreciate it, I couldn't figure out JUCE when I tired to use it.

41209··on Pedalboard: Spotify’s Audio Effects Library for Python
Any reason for picking GPL.

I was very excited to see this , but with a GPL license I can't use it in my projects .

41209··on Plans for $400B new city in the American desert unveiled
Considering my home state of California, where homeless encampments have reached the level where they are arguably towns with functional postal service, a good long winter isn't a bad thing.
41209··on Plans for $400B new city in the American desert unveiled
I'm very interested in exactly who would live here.

Chicago ( aside from the crime which is almost absent from Lakeview/Wigglyvile) is pretty much the perfect city. Cheapish housing + affordable high quality public transit.

Rather than move to your magic theme park, I can go to Chicago. Apart from tech bros and their families I can't imagine anyone liking this.

We already have a ton of rusted out near ghost towns. Why not invest money in one of those ?

41209··on Predictions for September 2031
I actually find this type of wishing to be very harmful. The future doesn't exist. I would have been more interested in seeing how this person plans on improving themselves over the next decade. For example I'm spending a good amount of money to learn Mandarin right now. I don't expect to be fluent, but within 10 years I would like to be able to ask about the weather.

I would have rather read something with concrete goals. Not just oh hopefully maybe I'll be married and happy by then. Life is an insanely strange journey and the more you try to plan the more disappointed you'll become.

When it comes to finding a partner, excessive planning is actually very harmful. You start to develop the strange idea that your owed something, or if you do x y and z a partner will materialize. I have several friends who are divorced now, you just can't predict the future. You might fall in love with someone amazing and then they suffer a breakdown and can no longer continue the relationship. Or you might be the one who suffers a breakdown.

It's hard enough to predict what you're going to be doing next month to be honest. Why try to guess what's going to happen in the next decade?

41209··on Ask HN: Do you find your job fulfilling?
Yes, but mainly because I get to help my coworkers. The actual work doesn't really matter, but being someone who can assist when your coworkers running into issues is great
41209··on Web-based editor
Love it.

If you have a pipeline setup you can of course run code on commit.

Hell, this turns an iPad into a limited dev station. For situations where your not at your dev system you can still get some limited work done.

41209··on Ruby Is Still a Diamond
Rather unfortunate, but if you really want you can fork it.

I spent a bit of time looking for another project, but it looks like they're just isn't a whole lot of movement on this

41209··on Game Engines on Steam: The Definitive Breakdown
I've been working on a side project using Unity. With HDRP you can make things look very nice, at this point I'm only limited by my own time.

You can buy Gaia, use HDRP and have a beautiful forest in about 3 minutes.

41209··on Reddit seeks to hire advisers for U.S. IPO – sources
Reddit has been forcing the app on users for a while.

Now you need to login or use the app to even read most threads unless you use old.reddit or a 3rd party site.

So they're going to get more and more aggressive here.
