41209··on Unity is buying Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital for $1.6B
>Meanwhile, Unity will be taking over the development of Weta Digital’s many built-in-house tools — things like City Builder

I'm so excited about this, while an array of 3rd party tools exist, I'd love something straight from Unity. The existing city builders are basically hobby projects by a single dev.

That said, you can do some amazing things with them. As is Unity is much more accessible than Unreal, I'm beyond happy to see this

41209··on A look at power on the new M1 Max
I'm loving my M1 Mac mini. I use it mostly for recording and it's very nice for that.

I still have my big desktop, but if I was to start again I'd go Windows Laptop+ Mac Mini. Realistically I don't want to spend 2k on a laptop, it can ultimately be stolen , destroyed, might not last too long , etc.

But with a Mac Mini you buy into the Apple ecosystem at a fairly low price.

41209··on Ask HN: Salary discussions – numbers are before or after taxes?
Even so-called good health insurance can often have massive gaps. I'm exceptionally fortunate in that I make enough money to just pay out of pocket, if I was poor or even just working class I wouldn't be able to say drop $100 or so on an Uber ride to and out of the way doctor. I'd be skipping medicine when I can't make my co-pays, which for my extremely treatable conditions would make things much much worse.

If I had one wish it would be to decouple healthcare from employment. No one should have a nightmare scenario where they get fired on Wednesday and next week can't afford their wife's heart medicine.

41209··on Ask HN: Salary discussions – numbers are before or after taxes?
Always pre tax.

Everything depends on the person. For example the same 2 people can make exactly the same, but live in 2 different states.

And with state income tax is varying from 10% all the way down to 0%, this choice of locale can make a big difference

41209··on Best way to make valid test emails
I totally was using the brackets. Thank you!

You've totally saved me tons of time and effort

41209··on Best way to make valid test emails
Thanks, this is enough for what I need to do right now.

Looks like Gmail doesn't like the [bar] solution though

41209··on Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors
I'm actually using Xbox gamepass for a lot of stuff.

I doubt this will work well, unless M1's can emulate windows at native speed.

41209··on Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors
Darn.

Hard pass then. I already have a pretty fast Windows laptop. The only real issue is it sounds like an helicopter underload. ( It also thermal throttles hard ).

41209··on Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors
Has anyone tried extremely graphically intense gaming on these yet, I actually would love to consolidate all of my computer usage to a single machine, but it would need to handle everything I need it to do. $2000 for a laptop that can replace my desktop, is not a bad deal. Although that said I’m in no rush here.
41209··on Fairphone 4 review: ethical repairable phone gets big upgrade
It goes against repairability, and sustainability which they're trying to promote.

I was very optimistic about this phone, but it looks like I'm going to have to go if the Google 5a

41209··on Fairphone 4 review: ethical repairable phone gets big upgrade
Why wouldn't you put a jack on this ?

They aren't selling earbuds !

41209··on Oculess – Removes account requirements and telemetry from Oculus Quest devices
I'll wait until someone else creates a sort of marketplace, or at least clear methods to install games.

A 500$ Quest 2 without Facebook spying sounds great.

41209··on Apple Captures 75% of Global Handset Market Operating Profit in Q2 2021
You can get a usb-c hub for 10$ with hdmi and usb ports.

That's essentially a desktop computer from the early 2010s in even the weakest Android phones.

More than enough to develop web apps on, I think a kid in Kenya was able to develop an entire website on a feature phone.

Samsung is trying to push Dex , so we'll see. It is worth noting many cheaper phones don't support HDMI out, but you could still figure out a way to project your phone to a monitor and have a desktop .

41209··on Oculess – Removes account requirements and telemetry from Oculus Quest devices
I just saw the announcement for the new HTC Vive standalone. I'm going to wait until someone figures out a way to run games on the thing, and then I might consider dropping $600 on that setup.

It's not a great idea to buy products which require you to hack them.

41209··on Common mistakes by indie game developers
Any reason you don’t like Unity.

Generally I update my tools often and I’ve shipped a mobile game. Only a few of my friends downloaded it , but it’s on the App Store.

41209··on Gitlab from YC to IPO
Azure assumes you aren't already using AWS.

You can only sell so much to the front office, if it's significantly harder to get things working on Azure, new features are going to ship later if they do at all.

41209··on Gitlab from YC to IPO
Are you using enterprise Gitlab?

I don't think Gitlab is a serious player outside of enterprise clients. But that's where the money is.

41209··on Gitlab from YC to IPO
In the same way the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X aren't competitors.

Many hard core gamers will have both. My Switch is for Smash Bros and the Advance Wars reboot. Advance Wars was one of my favorite games as a kid, and I'll pay 300$ for a machine just to play it.

The Series X also plays games, but it's a completely different experience. No one expects Switch quirkiness on an Xbox, and no one expects 4K gaming on a Switch.

GitHub is for your public portfolio. Gitlab is for getting stuff done once your GitHub portfolio lands you a decent job.

GitHub is synonymous with programmer portfolio, but it's CI/CD system is rather primitive.

41209··on Windows 11’s first update makes AMD CPU performance even worse
When it comes to OSes, I want them to stop screwing with it.

No one uses a computer to stare at OS UI design. No one cares about your new taskbar.

I want to start Windows up, launch my applications and not crash.

Give me security and performance fixes without messes with what works

41209··on Southwest operational meltdown as hundreds of flights canceled or delayed
If they want to pay they'll find someone.

I wouldn't mind taking a 250$ an hour position with on the job training.

Odds are they're getting outbid by easier jobs. If I can write Javascript for 130k or COBOL for 130, I'm doing JS.

41209··on Dos-like: Engine for making things with a MS-DOS feel, but for modern platforms
Can you add a license here ?

Not clear if I can use this or not.

41209··on Why I'm donating $150/month (10% of my income) to the musl Libc project (2019)
Any good documentation on the language itself ?

This looks like an easier Rust to me.

41209··on Udemy S-1 IPO
As a student I had a very similar experience.

Very rarely do you find something better on Udemy than you would on YouTube. YouTube often is a bit better since you don't have the sunk cost of paying 30$ for a class to realize it's trash.

Unity Learn is a much better alternative to any Unity content you'll find on Udemy. And with Unity deciding to make it free( I doubt anyone was really paying for it when it was a premium service), it's a great way to get started.

For most tech, take Flutter or React as good examples, the official websites tend to have tons of quality educational content.

41209··on E-Ink Magic Calendar that runs off a battery powered Raspberry Pi
All the complexity is handled by well known tools/libraries.

I can code a selenium script to capture a screenshot in my sleep.

Often using tools your know is the best solution.

Your free to fork this and come up with a cleaner implementation. This is probably why you need a PI Zero. Smaller micro controllers can't run a full browser.

Most of these projects are just whatever can be hacked together in a weekend.

41209··on FCC aggressively moves to block spam calls

41209··on FyneDesk, a fresh look at what it means to be a desktop environment
I would pay good money if someone figured out a way to get this thing to run on top of windows, while allowing me to run all my Windows programs anyway.

I assume this just isn't possible, but it would be so great. I ultimately love windows, but I definitely do miss the customization options Linux gives you.

41209··on AWS launches ARM-powered Lambdas
To be completely clear, if you just need a python script to basically Sync a few AWS services together, this is great. That’s how I use Lamdas now.

My main concern if I’m using something like Numpy, and I pull my dependencies locally on my 64-bit Machine I have no idea what’s going to work once I push it up to AWS ARM.

41209··on AWS launches ARM-powered Lambdas
This is awesome, saving that much money can be great for startups.

Oddly I can’t see lambdas being enough of a cost to justify it to hobbyist such as myself.

But this is a great sign of things to come, so much energy is consumed by data centers. Then again, I wonder how much code will randomly break, plus AWS’s dependency management is literally bundle it up locally and upload a zip.

What happens if a ARM package can’t be built locally.
