3guk··on Malware infects Android-based automotive head unit firmware
For a decent amount of the older android / CarPlay usb implementations - you can also buy little WiFi / USB dongles that perfectly enable wireless CarPlay - I’ve used them now on a few vehicles and they have been perfect !
3guk··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
I still find it wild that Tinned Fish Reviews, the parent channel of King Arthur can get 240k subscribers on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnM8PMUe_Kmp4-Ohq4V7Vdw

I must admit though I agree with you - the videos are kinda amusing !

3guk··on Apple introduces new AirTag with longer range and improved findability
Yep - I've got the UGREEN FineTrack Slim G Wallet Tracker Card in my wallet and it's perfect.

Love the fact that it's rechargeable - although a little bit annoying that it's with a USB to proprietary connector.

3guk··on Buy Your Own Space Selfie [video]
An awesome idea from Mark Rober !
3guk··on Fraudsters steal 22 tonnes of high-value cheddar
Damnit, you got me with that one !!
3guk··on KidPix
Wow what a trip down memory lane - I was obsessed with this as a child !

The sounds of each tool instantly transport me back !

3guk··on Couple's Life Savings Stolen in 'Trojan Horse' Mobile App Scam
I really hope that when Apple is forced to open up access to competing app stores that there will be a setting for me to ban sideloads or downloads on my parents devices.
3guk··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episodes of 2023?
I’ve really been enjoying the “Safety Third” podcasts from William Osman and co - not particularly informational but very entertaining, especially given most of the guys are from a science and engineering background.

Darknet Diaries is also one I recommend - Jack is a great host and storyteller.

3guk··on Innovative wireless light switch could cut house wiring costs in half
Don't think it's particularly innovative really - a lot of electricians in the UK are now installing the Quinetic - https://www.quinetic.co.uk/ - system and it works really well in terms of wireless switches.

Mostly it's not to save the cost of the actual cable - but to save the install cost on an old brick building, where installing a new switch requires fairly extensive work to the house and brickwork.

3guk··on macOS Sonoma is setting records for update size
At a guess I would say probably using OCLP - https://github.com/dortania/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher - lots of life left in old Mac’s using that tool !
3guk··on Acquia, my Drupal startup
Oh wow e107 takes me back to my early days of working on websites for my latest gaming obsession !
3guk··on Making it clear when we're on a call with you to protect you from fraud
I just don't pick up the phone to numbers that are not saved in my contacts anymore - seems to have saved me a tonne of hassle.
3guk··on The Steam Deck OLED spot ad was made with Steam Deck OLEDs
Great to see OBS also being used on this one - although I imagine setting up and configuring that many instances of OBS must have been a bit of a pain.
3guk··on Home Assistant blocked from integrating with Garage Door opener API
I fully suspect though that the people who do want Amazon Key and the people who are happily defrauding Amazon are not one and the same.

I realise that there are the porch pirates who are another issue entirely!

3guk··on RIP to my 8-port Unifi switch after years and years of Texas outdoor temps
I think that some of their more recent decisions have been questionable (Unifi Video -> Protect) - but there is still no doubt in my mind that you get a lot for your money, even if you do have to troubleshoot a little bit more than more pro (Cisco et al) stuff...

I'm not sure I love some of the more home automation based stuff as I've not used it - but at least with the Unifi Protect range and the switches / APs I've mostly been happy.

Seems like some of the more vocal people in the Unifi community are angry as they have built businesses around supporting these sort of setups - where I totally understand that a broken firmware update can wreck havoc.

3guk··on Using Goatse to Stop App Theft
It's explained on this page about how his blogging system works - https://joshcsimmons.com/post/H4sIAAAAAAAA%2F3xV227cRgx911cQ...
3guk··on The anatomy of a smart bulb
For anyone interested in more of this sort of stuff - including ways to modify some brands so they are not being driven as hard, it's always worth to check out Big Clive on YouTube.

3guk··on Ask HN: What's the coolest physical thing you've made?
Just wanted to add - I absolutely love watching your videos, thanks so much for all of the effort you put in !
3guk··on Monster Energy Goes After Indie Dev for Using the Word 'Monster'
Owned and developed by Milestone I believe.
3guk··on Lo-Fi ATC
This is fantastic- somehow works so perfectly as background noise for working in my home office.
3guk··on British Motorway Database
I've driven past this farmhouse a fair few times and also believed the urban myth - quite nice to know the actual reason for it's existence !
3guk··on Cybiko
Damn that takes me back - I begged my parents for one, eventually got one and found out that there was no one to actually message.

Definitely remember being a little bit addicted to Cylandia and eventually found another person at my school who had one.

3guk··on Ask HN: LastPass Alternatives
1Password for me - not overly happy that they moved over to a subscription based pricing, but I’ve been using it for years now and it works well across all of my devices.
3guk··on OneCoin co-founder pleads guilty to $4B fraud
I must admit - I really love the delivery of CoffeeZilla’s videos, really interesting coverage of a lot of this kind of thing, something that traditional media tends to gloss over.
3guk··on This to That
I love simple sites like this - it's a shame that google seems to punish sites like this that contain information that is not often updated (because it does not need to be).
3guk··on Ask HN: How do you read articles and newsletters?
I use Feedbin - https://feedbin.com for both my RSS feeds and email news letters - I find it works really well and allows me to favourite things as and when I wish to read them again.
3guk··on Disassembling an Amazon Blink Mini camera
Lots of RTSP cameras available - which would do exactly what you want and leaves you fairly open to whatever software you choose to implement on the server to share the feed.

I use lots of the Ubiquiti Cameras - I’ve had lots of success using them without the UniFi Protect controller app purely as RTSP devices.

3guk··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
I mean it’s probably quite tricky to keep a constant eye on every KM of both pipelines - but given the number of surveys involved just to get NS2 to a state where it could originally be pressurised - before they went bankrupt. I would say you could at least do semi regular inspections using ROVs.
3guk··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on this weekend?
Working on my home assistant installation - slowly finding more and more ways to make it useful!
3guk··on Show HN: RootMy.TV
Check out the SammyGo stuff - https://forum.samygo.tv/ - quite a trove of information relating to the Samsung firmwares.
