3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Too good to be true: when overwhelming evidence fails to convince (2016)
I feel this way about the vaccine. “95% effective at preventing infection” etc etc. I really believed it would stop transmission which we also know now is not true. Should have been more skeptical.

And before you say “that was before variants” remember that wasn’t the messaging. The message was “it’s safe and effective and protects others” and also “employer: based on what the CDC says take the vaccine or lose your job”

A lot of damaged trust in institutions these last few years.

There’s nothing wrong with a $1.70m toilet either.

So how do we fix it without adding yet another layer? All the govt seems to do is add more layers.
3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Americans' Trust in Media Remains Near Record Low
The major news outlets are just mouth pieces for the intelligence communities. Many of us learned that with the Iraq war. Others learned it with Palestine, Russiagate. The rest will learn it soon enough.
3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Finally, a billionaire willing to smack back at capitalism
The sheer amount of puff pieces written about this guy and what he’s doing tells me all I need to know about the situation.
3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana
“But it’s symbolic” is literally the cope of our generation.

It means practically nothing and we must demand more than symbolism.

Nothing in here about disabling adware, which is pretty much the only thing I care about.
3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Fauci offers candid advice to city leaders
We’re already seeing a huge disparity between states, with strong enforcement of social distancing NOT correlating with a reduced death rate. The point is we don’t fully know yet what the best policy will be.

By leaving it up to the states, we’re creating a distributed system where there can be failure without bringing down the whole country.

Is that any less secure than “sudo dpkg -i foo.deb”?
3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Programming Inside a Container
> The idea of a container approach is to always start from a pristine state. So you define the configuration that your database server needs to have, and you launch it, in this precise state each time. This makes your infrastructure predictable.

I’ve tried this before, but there’s still a lot of overhead maintained the pristine state. For example troubleshooting why a python package won’t run, you end up I installing and upgrading a lot of other packages. You’re not sure if that helped or it was something else — now what? You’ll spend time wondering if you want to carry your changes over or deal with the drift.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Alleged Hypocrisy and Discrimination at Glitch (Fog Creek Software)
As the saying goes, don’t build a tower until you’ve counted the costs, because of you only get it built halfway people will mock you.

All of these changes look good and quite frankly progressive (highest made a max of 4x the lowest, for example). Now that they haven’t delivered, it looks like it was just talk.

A shame really, because I’d like to see this kind of transparency catch on, but calling out the hypocrisy will certainly put downward pressure on it.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on China to Allow State-Security Agents to Police Hong Kong
Unfortunately I see a lot of parallels here, such as declassifying a lot of embarrassing information knowing it will get covered up by covid news.
3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on California affordable housing is more expensive than luxury housing
I'm still sbuurprised at how many people think we don't have buildings because of NIMBY residents, or because of lack of space. Our building issue is entirely self-inflicted. Do most people even know what it takes to remove an ordinance tree on your property? There's red tape EVERYWHERE, and special interest has made sure that their pet issues have considerations along each step of the way.
3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on How Nextdoor courts police and public officials
“I don’t like that man. I must get to know him.” Is as true today as it ever was.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Surviving Depression
> In therapy, you are unconditionally accepted with positive regard, which facilitates viewing yourself more clearly

You have described effectively the opposite of modern society, where there's a thirst to find faults in one another. Whether it some bias, political opinion, attitude, etc. It's a national past time to judge the virtue of another person's character. The less understanding and reflection on self, the more vicious the judgement.

Maybe if we begin spending less time virtue signally to one another and more time being alone with our own thoughts...

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Authorities say Hobby Lobby's Gilgamesh tablet is stolen, must go back to Iraq
I like hobby lobby because it’s one of the few places I can get good craft supplies for my kids, I suppose that’s why I “shilled” for them here (your words).

Besides, I think the negative sentiment towards them is obviously politically driven, and not some genuine concern for artifact provenance and ownership.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on U.S. Birthrates Fall to Record Low
> Creating another person is one of the most carbon-intensive actions anyone can do [...] Best to do that when you're SURE they will have all the resources they need to be a productive and helpful member of society...

I totally get the sentiment, but history stubbornly is full of people born into abject poverty who somehow rise to the occasion. Take a look on Wikipedia at inventor profiles. Our best, life changing inventions came from people who were born into less-than-ideal situations. In many ways the impact people have on the world is a dice roll and not a matter of proper financial preparation.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on U.S. Birthrates Fall to Record Low
> Also, with religious stresses being almost non-existent in the groups I run in I feel like people aren't jumping into legally-binding marriages

I’ve made the same observation, I think “common law” marriage is becoming a big thing. I also notice it’s not a mutually-appreciated situation for many couples long term, usually with one partner wanting to enter into a legal marriage but not the other for various reasons.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on The evidence behind putting money directly in the pockets of the poor
We have some forms of this, such as the earned income tax credit, but it doesn’t go nearly far enough.

I like the the idea of a reverse income tax at the lower levels and wish it was more popular, but it needs to be done in a way that it doesn’t discourage earning more money.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on The evidence behind putting money directly in the pockets of the poor
Consider how all sides are pretty fractured, left and right. Policies that were widely popular for the political right a decade ago (free, unrestricted trade) is now dead in the water with tariffs or the threat of them raining down. Similarly what’s “important” on the left is very fluid, and the political left is headed for the same upheaval the political right experienced with the tea party where it essentially became a populist platform.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Vermont proposes providing broadband internet service to all state residents
I don’t think anyone except fiber providers are offering more than 10 mbps upload.

Because piracy is an existential problem for Comcast (owner of NBCUniversial among others) there’s incentive to keep upload SLOW.

And don’t get me started on bandwidth caps. I remember doing the math and realizing I could hit my bandwidth cap in 8 minutes if my internet went the full theoretical speed.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Authorities say Hobby Lobby's Gilgamesh tablet is stolen, must go back to Iraq
Do you want to take a wager of how many times Christie’s is wrong regarding provenance for multimillion dollar historical items?

Not bad for hobby lobby, damned if they do and dammed if they don’t.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Authorities say Hobby Lobby's Gilgamesh tablet is stolen, must go back to Iraq
The Europeans were emptying their chamber pots nearly 1000 years after the Greeks invented most major math theory and were sending water hundreds of miles on aqueducts.

Kinda like when you buy a used car at auction, but it turns out it was stolen.

3fe9a03ccd14ca5··on Vermont proposes providing broadband internet service to all state residents
> That’s defined as speeds of 25 megabits per second for download and 3 megabits per second for upload.

I really wish they just considered symmetrical speeds. These bizarre asymmetric speed limits are just a made-up limitation of the Comcast era.
